Root AOSP officially available at xda

Really its a fix and release thing with our aosp....a" stable' or final release might be a while off...but it ll get more and more usable very quickly
 
So much happier with AOSP. But one thing that I miss from touchwiz and others like sense. Is the name dialing, like if I wanted to call Melinda I would start spelling her name in the dialer. But I can get over that.
 
It has been updated, not sure what all was fixed. Looks like sms is now working 100 percent of the time, nice.

Might finally download and put on phone.

They say it is, till MMS and BT are 100% Im still fence sitting myself. It was nice to see nem's kernels debut tonight on aosp thats one less hurdle in my eyes

This rom is really fast so far, haven't had a chance to really test anything yet though, tomorrow will be a better time for me to play around with it.

So what is up with nem's kernel? Is that located in the IRC? What is it about?

I don't think name dialing is tied to twiz as I removed that from my phone and it still works. Granted I am still on the geeknik 1.54 superfast kernel but plan on going to voodoo later this week.

I'm not an authority on the matter but I'm pretty sure that "removing" touchwiz - by which I assume you mean renaming/deleting the touchwiz apk so that it doesn't run - does not actually remove a lot of the touchwiz customizations to various other apps made by samsung, including the dialer and SMS applications.
 
So, if we install AOSP, does that mean any newer version of Android that becomes available on AOSP can be installed automatically?

Or would our devs have to fine-tune it still?

it doesnt matter....anything that is released in flashable form can be installed over anything else...usually it involves a data/cache wipe

the only thing that might change is the radio or something (unlikely in this case) and that would be an odin flash

so more to the point...its not any easier/harder to upgrade to a newer aosp from aosp or touchwiz based rom
 
Nitsuj- how is it running for you with OTB? I have the same kernel on my SF, just haven't taken the plunge to flash AOSP yet without getting some feedback

So i have a few questions nitsuj, i'm currently in the stock dj05, I want to try this out to see if it gets rid of some lag that i'm still experiencing:
1) do you notice lag improvement?
2) Was it difficult to get it installed?
3) can you easily switch back to stock dj05 if i don't like it?
4) this post is from 12/30, but i notice your signature states 1/3, is this the latest version you are running?

1. its comparable to dj05 because of all the debugging stuff in it that slows it down a lot....id try a custom kernel for dj05 to reduce lag honestly
2. no different than flashing anything else really...except you have to flash the rom, then google apps, then a kernel
3. nandroid back as usual
4. the xda post never got updated...there was a 1/4 nightlie that was the last edition...currently im sticking with 1/3 for awhile

What custom kernel would you recommend to remove this lag, its really getting to me, I find myself on several occasions restarting the phone to "fix" things.

really anything voodoo5 is fine...but that of course comes with the standard voodoo warning....check saps oc kernel thread for it

Well i ended up using OTB.test5_ul_1100, but not sure if it was installed correctly, when I installed it using clockwork it took less than 3 minutes, at most 5, seems too quick?? Running SetCPU it does show 1100Mhz, but phone is still running slow. Running Quadrant, it takes forever in I/O File system writes.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Also anyone notice a black box that blinks in the center of the screen during boot animations (both Samsung and Verizon)?

If the slider goes to 1100 then it installed fine. :) you may want to take setcpu off as its not really necessary on our phones....also if you have multiple launchers you may want to remove all but 1

There is no harm is having setcpu installed. In fact for those searching for battery life underclocking the cpu to 800Mhz is a epic win. Im trying out imnuts -150mv at all steps kernel and capped the top at 800Mhz. Still too early to tell but this looks to be a juggernaut for ridiculous batter life. I did this the other day with a nemesis kernel [set the top at 800Mhz]; definitely does extend battery life. Frankly, the difference in real world speed or even game play between 1200 and 800 is minimal. And now having run at 800Mhz for many many hours in the past few days Im more inclined than ever to give a nod to the folks preaching OC is not needed. I'd even take it a step further by asserting that UC is not going to cost you anything in appreciable performance. There is a still a part of me thats like to return to 1200 because while greater battery life is great even with the 1200 I can make a full day most of the time. If I get into too many games obviously it drains a ton.
Bottom Line while I wont debate the term necessary when speaking of setcpu, I would advocate that its a wonderful tool to have in the toolbelt. For some perspective, Id say Titanium is also not necessary but oh so very useful to have. I access setcpu multiple times everyday whereas some days I dont open my TiBu app. I could say the same for BW. Not necessary but Id rather use it than not

yeah i should have clarified "not neccessary" by saying i dont use in normal use as i dont underclock...i just let the kernel do its thing....i keep it installed and pop it on if im out all day and need to underclock :)

Yeah I never thought Id be underclocking myself but when I realized and saw first hand just how little the drop off was from 1200 to 800 it surprised me. All in all I'll probably go back to 1200 after I test this imnuts kernel out because after all I can drop from 1200 to 800 if I need/choose to

good call.

i just think people in general use setcpu when their using it in situations its not needed...like running a stock kernel with no changes/no underclock...or just leaving the widget on with no intention of using it
