[APP] GrooVe IP - Google Voice VoIP

I'm leaving for a trip to Costa Rica in a couple days, and this app would be perfect to make and receive calls from home and friends, since my hotel has wifi. What I'm worried about is... if I leave my phone on to receive calls over wifi, how do I make sure I don't get expensive regular calls and texts? I'm thinking Airplane Mode. Would that work? Is there a better way?

The stock setup for Airplane Mode also disables wifi. There are probably a few ways to change this, but I think the easiest is to install Daniel Velazco's free "Airplane Mode Wifi Tool" from the android market. Then you can check the "keep wifi on" box and uninstall the app (unless you want to keep it). After that, wifi will stay on even in airplane mode so you can use groove IP while disabling 3g/sms/mms and voice calls.

Thanks, mightysween! I checked out Airplane Mode Wifi Tool, and it says, "This tool works with any version of Android...however it is only necessary if you have a device with Android 1.5-1.6. Android 2.0+ allows Wifi to be toggled while in AP Mode."
So I put my phone in Airplane Mode, then went into the Wifi settings. Wifi was turned off. I clicked to turn it back on, and my phone is now in AP Mode with Wifi turned on! Awesome! This WILL keep me from getting calls & texts over regular network, while allowing me to receive/make wifi calls over GrooVe IP, right?

that is correct, but i do not think turning on wifi makes it persistent. (at least not on my phone). In other words, you would have to turn it on each time you use airplane mode. The setting in that app makes the change permanent so wifi always stays on without having to tell it to.

That would be ok. Once I put it in AP Mode in Costa Rica, I'm not changing it back until I land back in the old US of A. On my next trip I can just turn on wifi again - takes less than 10 seconds.

Thank you again. I hadn't even thought about not being able to use wifi to look stuff up, get directions, etc while there. Now I can use my phone for internet and calls without worrying about racking up network charges! Awesome!

I love this app but there is a terrible lag. Any suggestions?

Lag or delay is generally caused by latency on the network. Are you using 3G? Or WiFi? If it's WiFi it may also be the wifi going into power saving when the screen turns off. To fix that you can go into your phone settings and change the power/battery profile.

It actually was wifi, thanks.

I've been able to make some calls on GrooveIP (Optimus V), but often the status will show that I am signed out and will show the red indicator. I am signed into Google Talk. A few hours ago, I power cycled and then I was signed in, but then it signed out again. I have 3g and wi-fi enabled.
Any suggestions?

Thanks

Wouldnt you like to release GV IP for N900 / maemo?. So many ppl are waiting for it.

One more question: im using incredible S and hope to return it and move to a Galaxy S phone. How do i transfer the app?.

I started having the same problem today with my Galaxy tab. Plus it still doesn't wake up when I get a incoming call while using wifi. I hear the house phone ring and then the tab rings just before going to vm, after 3 rings.

love the app. A few things we need, if they haven't been mentioned.

hook into system volumes (volume rocker!)
on-the-fly mic settings. they seems to vary a lot for me.

Is there any way to estimate what the necessary bandwidth is for a call?

in my experience, there is no lag, and I'm on a fairly mediocre 3g network. vzw, about -90 or below. ESPECIALLY compared to google voice.

First, let me say 5 stars to the developers. Downloaded last month to use in Mx and it worked perfectly with a Wi-Fi connection. Worth every penny!

Now my dilemma.....I have the app set to allow 3G/4G calling. When I enter my house I have the phone (HTC Inspire) set to log onto my Wi-Fi so that when I am home calls are made over the Wi-Fi. When I leave the house Groove IP automatically goes to the 3G/4G setting to make calls over this network. The problem is it seems I have to re-boot (restart) the phone every time as I come and go into these scenarios (the Gv icon usually always shows green meaning I should be good to go). Once I re-boot, I can make calls over Wi-Fi or the ATT network. Any insight?

Check your battery profile. Data might be set to go into power saving when the screen turns off or the phone is idle. That would cause the app to disconnect. Also if you have any task killers or battery managers like juice defender. Those can also cause it. Or if you've moved the app to the sdcard, sometimes that causes problems.

Some bandwidth info here snrb Labs - FAQ near the bottom.

Shouldn't have to reboot...restart of the app should start things from scratch.

Is the problem that the app signs out and doesn't sign in again automatically?

"Exactly how do you restart the app?"

Is the problem that the app signs out and doesn't sign in again automatically?

"I have Autostart checked......Yes, it seems though when I leave the Wi-Fi coverage the app signs out and does not sign in again automatically to use the mobile network"

"Pls advise!"

Autostart only starts the app when the phone starts

You may be running into one of the issues we're working on right now. There are cases where a sign in attempt can get stuck and it blocks all further sign in attempts. Restarting the app fixes it. The next update, which right now should be this weekend, will have a fix for that.

Can you add a feature that would automatically call certain numbers from the log (like with prefix +1 or based on contact name) using Groove ip and all other calls using the standard dialer. Basically the same feature as the exceptions filter in GV Callback, which I used before switching to groove. Thank you!

So I added this today. Just want to make sure it works the way you're thinking. In the GrooVe IP settings you can now configure a dial prefix. If you make a call from the native dialer that starts with that prefix, GrooVe IP (as long as it's running) will strip/remove the prefix and dial the number. This will happen even if your built in dial preference is set to always ask or always use mobile network. So basically the prefix setting trumps everything else.

Only thing I wasn't sure about was stripping the prefix or not before dialing. Right now we're removing the prefix before dialing.

I've mentioned many times what a great app this is and that is why I am going to ask this question. Is it possible to make this app for the iPhone? My son has that phone and my husband will upgrade to the new iPhone.

Just asking,
Thanks
