Apple launches iPhone 5: Lighter, taller, thinner and faster — Apple News, Tips and Reviews
Even with the 4-inch 1136 x 640 display, the new iPhone 5 appears ideal for one-handed use. “Apple designs phones for hands, Samsung designs phones for humans,” said Apple CEO, Tim Cook, alluding to the large, 5.5-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 2 that’s part phone, part tablet. Apple integrated the touch sensors into the display, helping to make the phone thin and light: 18 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than the iPhone 4S.

I'm as much an android fan as anyone here, but objectively speaking, the iPhone 5 IS a significant upgrade over the iPhone 4S. It's noticeably thinner and lighter, has a larger screen, has a next generation faster processor, and offers LTE. On paper, it also promises better color saturation, great battery life, and better call and speaker quality.

Obviously when comparing it to current Android phones, which offer many, if not all of these features already, it may not be a big deal. And I still would not give up my S3 for the iPhone 5. However, to current owners of iPhones, it's a far bigger upgrade than the iPhone 4 to 4S and offers many incentives to upgrade. And to those on the fence between an Android and iPhone, it does make the decision tougher to make. Just trying to keep it real.

Virtually every feature announced for this phone is Apple playing catch-up with the rest of the industry. I am stunned.

my son is very angry, he just bought two i phone 4S three week ago the Verinon store told them that they didn't know when the new i 5 was coming out. he paid the same price that the 8g is selling for. I just talked to him and he is getting in touch with verizon to ether upgrade to the i5 or get a rebate.
PS he had to take one back after a week it would use the batterer up in two hours. they gave his a new phone.

Why would he buy two iPhones 4S' 1 month away from the iPhone 5 announcement? Today's big event has been known for several weeks now.

In fairness a quick google 2 weeks ago would have told him of the iPhone 5 announcement (or at least that it was due very soon)
Verizon want sales and got what they wanted.

For people happy with the iPhone for the last few years this is exactly what they wanted. I look forward to MANY discussions with people I know over how great the iPhone 5 is :D

i got sick of my iphone bc it was basically the same thing with every model. but those apple followers really are pretty nuts, you know they are going to be calling the new iphone the greatest invention on earth no matter what specs it has.

They have to save something for next year ;)

no
1. theres not a large enough take up on nfc and the reality of nfc is just to get more indentifiable information on users

2. apple dont need to do the above as all of their user use itunes or icloud and have to submit credit card details just to get free apps from the app store

3. top companies have signed up to ipocket blah blah for money transfers (copied from o2 wallet)

It was a joke..:D

apple and their iphone's will never beat Samsung or any other android device. apple is brainless.. i seen nothing diffrent in there iphone lines other than size and some lil hardware software fixes.

Apple is a joke! It took them 5 iphones to finally have it 4G?!

I can't believe they called the new iphone features "revolutionary" and "never been seen before". Most Android devises have had these "new Apple features" for over a year.

No wonder they were/are so keen to sue Samsung.

The new processor is pointless because its strangled by iOS6. You wont be able to run anything on a 5 that you can't run on a 4 or 4s.
Apple camp have criticised the so called "fragmentation" in Android, ironically the lack of "fragmentation" is now crippling their devices because they can't differentiate when they have capable hardware.

LTE may be useful to you USA folk, but over here we don't even have a publicly available LTE network (coming soon).. when we do it will be extra expense and have poor coverage (HSDPA isn't great). The final nail in that coffin is that its exclusive to one carrier until 2014..

The 5 will sell bucket loads, not because its the best device but because its the fashion accessory of the moment.

I'm not even sure about that. It's tough to visually tell the difference between the 4, 4S, and 5. So unless you're shoving the 5 in somebody's face (which is pretty obnoxious), people are probably just going to see "iPhone".

The fragmentation debate is about to get interesting. The Apple App Store is currently divided into 2 sections. One for iPhone/iPod Touch, the other for iPad. This is, I suspect, due to iOS not allowing resolution scaling. Now they are introducing 2 new form factors to their product line. The iPhone 5 and the iPad Mini. So, does this now mean that there will be 4 sections to the App Store? Where if you publish an app, you now have to make 4 different versions so that your app is compatible with all available form factors?

I also heard that if you bought an iPhone app, and then get an iPad and want to put that app on your iPad as well, you have to buy the iPad version separately. If this is true (I do not know as I've not owned an iPad), and then there has to be 4 different sections, then that is going to aggravate a lot of customers.

At the very least, pushing the need to scale on the individual app developers seems kind of wrong to me.

I only found out about this the other day. I asked someone about an app (I forget which) and they said "Yeah you can get it for the ipad but not the iphone" and I was like "whassat?"
