Apps list and performance checklist

I thought I would just put this up to see what Senior members Like Jazziette think and to see what people are using. I prefer free market apps, but I did get a couple of paid ones.

advanced app drawer
advanced task killer
androotfile
better keyboard
barcode scanner
boot animation installer
cachemate (phone worked much faster after I used this app)
g-mon
latitude (can I remove this?)
metro navigate
metro web
mocospace (can I remove this?)
root explorer
superuser
titanium backup
where's my droid?
youtube (this app sucks in my opinion)
Z4Root

I previously had all the bloatware that comes with a metro PCS phone before I rooted it and cleaned it out.
while I was deciding on a bootup animation I kept a couple of older animations in memory, cleaning them out seem to make the phone faster too.

What are YOU using and why? and can I get the 2.2 upgrade if my phone is rooted?

thanks.

You can remove mocospace, but I don't know if it's OK to remove Latitude. I looked at it, and it's tagged with Google's name, and people have recommended not to remove any Google apps as they could cause issues.

I haven't heard anybody say definitively whether or not you have to unroot to upgrade to 2.2, custom or stock. If you're upgrading to a custom ROM, however, you're going to be wiping your phone anyway, so it's a moot point.

Do you think I can remove youtube? it's like a totally different app on android, and it doesn't even return the same search results, and it takes a year to load a 1 minute video.

Agreed, it does suck..and is often on the running process list, always have to kill it.

Thank you for such confidence! I hope I can live up to it. :) With regards to free apps vs paid ones. If I like an app good enough to keep it I will buy the pro version just because I believe in rewarding the developer who spends so much time developing the program as well as updating it. It's not a lot of money normally.

advanced app drawer Haven't used it, will have to check it out.

advanced task killer I do not use a task killer but if I did it would be that one.

androotfile No experience with it.
barcode scanner This app is wonderful but doesn't work well with the Ascend due to the camera and no auto-focus.

boot animation installer I'm going to try this one. Have heard good things about it.

cachemate (phone worked much faster after I used this app) A must have app! Drawback: Only works on rooted phones.

g-mon Haven't used it.

latitude (can I remove this?) No. It's a google app and needs to be left in place or you can have probs.

metro navigate Same as above.
metro web I have Cricket and I haven't removed my stock browsers. I use dolphin mini browser.

mocospace (can I remove this?) Yes

root explorer Very useful app.

superuser You have to have it if you are rooted.

titanium backup Great app for removing and freezing and restoring stock apps. There are others but this is my favorite. Important to back up everything first!

where's my droid? I need this one.

youtube (this app sucks in my opinion) It works okay for me but is slow loading. I don't know why I keep it. LOL

Z4Root Best app for rooting IMO

Keeping your phone clean will help it to perform better. That was smart!

This isn't a complete list but covers the basics to give you an idea of what apps the users on this forum value the most:

Papa

OK: one last question and I swear I'll owe you one (custom ringtone maybe? I have a recording studio)

Hey guys, thanks for the space! Very helpfull information!
I got my Ascend last December from Metro and I have a question. If I buy a 16gb card my phone will be faster? Thanks for your time!
I can run about 100MB free of internal memory on the LauncherPRO Plus but want to make the phone faster and the last thing I haven't done is upgrading the SD card.

On Cricket.. You can NOT! delete youtube. I did and afterwards i couldn't get any online videos to play. I had to google the apk and reinstall, back to normal

The SD card will not make a difference in your phone's performance, it is for storage. The only time it CAN make a difference is if you have Icarus MOD installed (or Froyo when it is released), which enables installing apps to the SD card rather than internal storage. In this case, what you're looking for is the CLASS RATING of the SD card. The larger the number, the faster the card can be read from/written to. The highest I've heard from anybody's mention so far is Class 10.

Ouch, expensive! Newegg has that card for half the price, but they're sold out right now, sadly. However, if anyone would like to look at the alternatives...

Newegg.com - Flash Memory,16GB,Class 10,sd card class 10

FYI, Patriot memory products have yet to fail me. I've had PC memory and currently have a flash drive made by them, never had an issue.

That's a REAL GOOD DEAL on the Kingston. Did you sign up for 'auto-notify'?

:)

Nah, I'm not looking for a card right now. But I have bought from Newegg multiple times over the last few years, and I've never had a problem with them either. More often than not, they have the best deals anywhere for PC and electronics stuff, and if you live outside of California, you don't pay taxes. The same goes for any online vendor who does not have an office in your state.
