Apps you like and why.

App: Color Flashlight

Ok, I thought this app was cool in the beginning....but now I think it is even cooler.

They added a "Candle" option and if you tie it together with Screebl and pop it open while eating dinner with the wife/gf/husband/bf/etc.., I think it would be kinda neat.

Bobeink

I'm currently using "SportsTap" and think it's fantastic. It lets you follow all the major sports, professional and college (Soccer includes 11 countries, UEFA Cup and Champions League and World Cup.). You can also select your favorite teams and get updates when they play. Best of all it's free.:D

If you're only interested in soccer, I prefer FotMob for news clips and good analysis, or Soccer Livescores on game day to watch all the scores roll in at a glance.

Well now that some of us have our Heros, and more will get them on Sunday, we need a place to talk about apps.

One of the apps I would recommend is Barcode Scanner as it scans QT Codes, so should you prefer to look up other apps from your PC all you need to do is scan the QR code and it will take you right to the app. In my opinion it makes it easier to find and add apps to your Hero.

Pandora - If you like the computer version, you will like this as well. Im streaming it as I type and the quality is good. No hiccups with the songs or anything.

I love the barcode scanner...this is just way too cool. Anytime I go shopping I will definitely be using it to get reviews on products I see that I like to make sure they are worth buying.

I agree, I much prefer FotMob.

To throw in another few apps to the mix, my favourites are-

Locale
Last.fm
Squeezecontrol (allows control of Squeezebox players)
Shazam ('listens' to a short section of music, then compares it to an online database, returning the song and artist - very handy for pub quizzes...)
Gmote (allows you to control a PC from the phone as if it was a wifi keyboard and mouse)

+1

Just downloaded and tried it out. This is probably the coolest app I've seen IMO.;)

I drive a hybrid (2005 Civic) and I've been keeping track of every tank of gas and the mileage of my car since day one. I would write down the total miles driven for each tank, get a receipt for the total number of gallons filled, and enter this info on a website later.

Now I downloaded a little app called simply "Mileage" by Evan Charlton, and it is perfect! It even let me import a CSV file with my car's mileage history, and provides handy charts and stats all about how I use my fuel. (for the curious, my car's lifetime MPG is 52.69)

Here are some other apps I've installed:

Astrid

Android Light Saber (so I can battle it out with my iPhone enemies at work)

AppManager

Barcode Scanner

Bubble (think carpenter's level)

Google Voice

Handcent SMS (to replace the built in message app and help battery life, as mentioned in another thread)

Marine Compass

Locale

My Collection Pro (my first paid app for $0.99. It let's you scan the barcodes of any DVD, CD, Book, or Game and look it up, then save it in a database on your SD card. If you lend a DVD to a friend, just mark it as "lent" and choose who you lent it to. GREAT app for keeping track of all your movies, books, games, and music!)

NewsRob (RSS reader with Google Reader sync)

Pandora (of course)

Places Directory

Robotic Guitarist (has a guitar tuner built in)

Ruler

Shazam

ShopSavvy

SnapTell

TuneWiki

Yz Free (Yahtzee clone)

The ones in bold have impressed me so far. The others I'm still testing out and may or may not make the cut. We'll see.

IMO, Bubble sorta sucked. Theres another level out there called "The Geek Level". Far more impressive than bubbles little circle.

I havent tried Android lightsaber, but I would check out The Schwartz Unsheathed. Its an excellent lightsaber app, that looks and sounds great.

Bubble's circle turns into a horizontal, more traditional level when the phone is tilted. Haven't tried the Geek Level, but I just might :-)

Thanks for the tip on the Schwartz! It's much better than the other lightsaber app, mainly because it's faster and doesn't crash :-)

What no Yellow Pages?

Thats a good many apps you have there.
Oops, you got me, I also have Yellowbook. I agree with you, my list current is excessive. I don't plan on keeping them all, but there's so many Android apps available that I have a few more to look at and compare before settling on my keepers. OTOH, as long as I'm careful to back out and/or shut them down when not in use, storing that many apps doesn't seem to slow the OS down at all.

The only single thing that I miss on my Black Berry is the fact that I have 7 email accounts, and after setting them all up, they would all aggregate to 1 "messages" spot on my BB, which as I read through each one, I could see if needed where it came from.

I have searched and searched to no avail. Does anyone happen to know of an email app that places all of your mail in 1 spot?

Currently, each time I get an email with the HTC Mail app, I have to click through each box one at a time attempting to figure out which mailbox has mail.

I have ton of apps installed right now. Here are the ones I have decided to keep:

Locale - Use this one to turn on WiFi when I get to work since I work in the basement and have zero reception as well as turn the volume down so I don't annoy my co-workers.
Astrid - using Remember the Milk sync and loving it.
Abuduction! - Yeah I don't waste ANY time at work with this one.
FBReader - Wish there was one with mobipocket support but I am slowly converting my library.
NewsRob - The best RSS reader with Google reader support out there. Love the offline option.
Astro - Gotta have a file browser and this one works.
Barcode Scanner - QR scanning rocks.
chompSMS - Because it's better.
FXCamera - Time killer for bored offspring.
Graviturn - Level 43 why do you hate me?
Layar - For the WOW value.
RingDroid - I have different ringtones for everyone I call more than once a week and I like to make them myself.
Sound Grenade - For those meetings that go over...they never suspect it's coming from my pocket.
Twidroid - Not great but better than Peep.
Wikitude - Another WOW factor app.

I was using and liking ChompSMS. I heard good things about HandcentSMS in this thread, tried it, and like it more. You might want to take a look.

I am sooooo sad.... :(

Being a Canadian, I can't buy any of these great sounding apps.
In case these turn out to be a dumb questions, please forgive my Android noobness in advance, but why not? To begin with, all the apps that I posted were free. Assuming that Canadian wireless carriers offer Android phones, then other than language considerations, wouldn't Android compatibility apply across the border? Most of these apps were written before there was a separate Sprint hero, and they're working just fine in my phone. If you happen to choose paid apps, wouldn't your credit card work the same as mine?

I do believe some of the apps have geographical restrictions to go along with the Android version restrictions. However I can't seem to remember where I read this so I could just be making stuff up as I go along.

I like to use barcode scanner to scan QT codes, but the problem is I have yet to find a link that actually works (market apps). Contacts and regular links work great, but if it's an app I seem to always get an error.

It's hard to pick a favorite to write about. AppManager is one I've recently downloaded. It lets you run/uninstall/update apps from a quick list, as well as gives you the ability to backup/install an app from (not to) your sd card.

Now a question. I pulled Screebl from above and absolutely love it. Just what I've been wanting and solves my frustration of having to unlock the device to end a phone call. What I'd love to have is an app (unless there's a setting I'm missing) that will make the screen stay on while the phone is charging. Anyone?

The only time I had a problem with a QR Code was early last Friday when I first got my Hero and tried to fine Pandora. For some reason, they had not yet fixed the issue with Pandora not being available. The QR code worked, but didnt link back properly, I really think it was a market issue.

Other QR codes I have used worked flawlessly.

Regular barcodes for ShopSavvy on the other hand, usually tell me that I can buy a box of Cheez-Its for $135 (or something equally insane) from Amazon.

i had that happen to. Sometimes on shop savvy if you scan the bar code short it reads something else. Watch the red line when it captures the bar code..... Make sure its all the was across the bar code!!!

It got the product right. Nothing wrong there. I just had to laugh at the price ShopSavvy came back with.
