Are ad sites killing the forum?

I never really have any issue with ads what so ever. Things load plenty fast for me. Plus the sights gotta get payed for some how.

Once again, this thread (at least my OP) dosn't have anything to do with the ads themselves, but how the lag caused by non responsive scripts, at least in Firefox.

I'm back to donating but you guys are killing me with the lag man!!:):)

You are still getting the lag?

Have you tried a different browser?

IIRC, I remember you saying you have a rather fast internet connection. Mine isn't that fast and mine loads almost instantly using Chrome.

Chrome is a lot faster (so far) but being a longtime Firefox user it's hard to let go. May be time to though.
I still get the lag as shown in the OP using Firefox. Not on every refresh but way to often.

Glad I have not yet seen those ads here but I'm using SeaMonkey not Firefox (FF would not allow my "home/end" and direction buttons to work with consistency here and at some news sites etc but they do in SM). But ads like those that suddenly intrude just make me hate the product being advertized (if I notice and remember whatever it is :D).

But I think those agencies want exposure and pay for it. One of the "oh wells" we have to put up with for quality sites.

I see there is a "premium" choice here. Does that remain voluntary or are we expected to do that after so much time here?

Rob (the site owner) has now informed us that our initial implementation of skimwords had a few bugs, which came to light once it was turned on. Most importantly, they were intended to only show up for guests; anyone logged into an account (be it premium/non-premium) should not be seeing them. I never saw them myself, as for whatever reason not everyone did, but several of the mods who were effected have said they are now gone.

Thanks for bearing with us.

Not to drag up an old issue
But I'm just curious where we are at with this "implementation".
I was googling around today and came across an AF link that had adwords/skimwords. I was not logged in at the time. (this seems different than in the recent past - a change within the last few weeks maybe?)

So skimwords/adwords show up for guests that are redirected to the site from search engines or something? It would be nice to know the situation with these. A update note would be a good thing if one is not planned already.

I believe that was the plan. They'd only show up if you weren't logged in and the thread you were viewing hadn't been posted in within the last 24 hours (can't remember the exact time so that could be wrong).

It's for unregistered members only (supposed to be!) and for threads that are at least X days old. I don't know the exact number as it is something they are tweaking around.

It would be cool if there was a way for someone to opt out of their posts, even from the distant past, having ad words in them. A buried setting, or a premium member clause or something.

Came across this today, if someone posts the word p r or P R (without the space) it gets underlined and the tool tip (hover your mouse) show 'Google Page Rank'. Not sure what's going on with that...

i see the pop up text, same thing happened to Xyro when he posted the word vB

no link though for me (on either example). just the weird hover text...

They only seem to get underlined on Firefox, not chrome. The hover text is on both browsers.
