Ascend v. Optima

Hello All,

I am deciding between the 2 phones for Metro and was hoping for some feedback on the merits of each. Obviously the Huawei is less expensive but are there any benefits over the LG? Does Huawei update their roms more or is that irrelevant because metropcs is in control anyway?

TIA

Oh.... and I need this info pronto I cant keep my wallet in my pocket much longer. :D

Hey mate I dont know much about the optimus but i just read a quick tech spec overview, and to be honest, the only thing that differs about the optimus is the Price and the version of Android OS. I'd save a few bucks and go with the Ascend. Reason being, the Huawei is rolling out android 2.2 early next year, and for the price difference, i wouldent pay the extra just for 2.2. Both have the same speed processor, and from what it looks like, the ascend has more RAM.

So, My final opinion, Choose the Ascend

Only thing I hate about the Ascend is the 2.5mm headphone jack and the fact it doesn't have a proximity sensor nor a LED light. Take those into consideration.

Thanks for the feedback. The Huawei website lists the resolution as HVGA(320x240) but that is QVGA resolution. The LG is true HVGA 480x320. Seems to me that is a mistake but if it isn't then the Huawei screen must be grainier due to its slightly larger size. HW has 256mb onboard vs 150mb LG. LG has haptic feedback not sure about the HW. Unaswered is whether the HW has the accelerometer which auto flips the display to landscape and if there is good GPS on it as metronavigator will definately be used. I have to also tell you that hooking up the LG for one of my users was a snap - it connected to our SBS server and synced up his contacts, calendar, and corp email very fast. Easier then the WinMo 6.1 devices we have been using. I haven't figured out how to do a Pim USB sync with Android yet but now that I know how easy 2.2 works I am ready to move up for myself and the rest of the team (5 users total). If Huawei is otherwise up to par and 2.2 is truly coming soon then I would save us $200 by going with the HW. But if it turns into vaporware I will have to do the IT shuffle :) I guess the final question is which device will likely get the roms cooked out of them first??

Cant be sure on which one will get roms pushed out for it first. Currently im trying my hardest to get a dev to pick up on the ascend.

Yeah, this site confirms what I have seen, that some sites say that the Ascend has a 528mHz processor (like PCMag) and some say the 600MHz processor (like CNET). I wish we knew for sure, because that 528MHz processor isn't just a bit slower, it's much older, too. The 600MHz one that I have seen referenced is the EXACT same one as in the Optimus M (7227), and it's a substantial upgrade from, for example, the G1. Also, keep in mind that the battery capacities are exactly the same, but with a bigger screen the Ascend will have a lower overall battery life.

So would the Cricket version of the Ascend have a different processor than MetroPCS? Is that common?

My family owns both optimus and 2 ascends. Optimus has more ram. ascend got 256mb and optimus has 423mb. Also I dont think ascend has a proximity sensor. Optimus battery life is much powerful. Its also a much better multitasking.

Well to be honest i asked myself this same question. I ended up getting the Huawei Ascend because of course the LG Optimus is pricier but the Ascend looked even better and even though it's new to the US it's been rising high in China... I honestly don't regret buying my Ascend and i keep learning new ways on how to make it better i dont really care much about having Froyo on it because Froyo still needs work i'd rather get it when it's bug free haha and the Ascend runs up to 600MHz using the SetCPU App from the market for $1.99 but my phones rooted so a lot of things are free and simpler to use ;) Remember this small differences can make you or break you it may just be a phone but its your money spend it wisely haha forget the LG Optimus its just a Ford Mustang! But The Huawei Ascend is the Dodge Charger SRT8 for the Metro PCS and Cricket Nation! :)
