Root Aspiring Noob trying to get Rooted

Hi, I have a Desire (non branded, I think) and I've been thinking about rooting for a while but was waiting until after the GB update. Now that has been cancelled I would like to take the plunge. I imagine you're all probably sick of guiding people through the process, but can anyone 'in the know' please confirm that I must:

1. Create a Goldcard
- I'm on a 3UK contract but there is no branding on the phone as far as I can see. Is it wise to create a Goldcard whether branded or not?

2. My 'Essential Info'
- Build No. 2.xx.405.x (This means I must use unrEVOked 3.32)
- Hboot 0.93.0001
- PVT4
- Erase size 20000

3. Download
- HTC Sync (This is on my PC already. I must uninstall but leave Driver Installer)
- Hboot Drivers (On to my PC)
- UnrEVOked 3.32 (On to my PC)

4. Root.

5. Flash Rom.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the prompt reply! I was planning on using a separate 4GB microSD. Am I right in thinking that I must have the card in the phone in order to Format and run the Goldcard tool?

The Goldcard Tool link on the FAQ didn't work, but I downloaded GoldCardTool 0.0.5.zip from Android@MoDaCo. Is this OK?

I have not tried that one. I have used the HEX editor in the drop box, I know that works.

Full instructions are at the unlockr.com

I've created the Goldcard (it seemed to work fine). Now for the Root...

Could you please tell me if I can forget about Amon Ra as my Erase size is 20000?

OK, I have created a Goldcard, Installed, then uninstalled HTC Sync (except Driver Installer), Installed Hboot Drivers.

All that's left is the Rooting process right?

So now I must:

Turn on Desire normally
Enable USB Debugging
Run unrEVOked

Will unrEVOked prompt me to connect phone? And do I connect normally?

Thanks.

Unrevoked once open will run as soon as you connect. Please use the root guide available in the sticky or my signature. Follow exactly

Thanks, I've done it. Woo-hoo!! :D

I was following the guides I was just very scared.

Superuser Permission in my apps means success, is that right?

(I think I'll leave flashing a Custom Rom for another time, I need to lie down...)

Cyanogen is my favourite, Miui, and is nice, but noobs tend to go for Leedroid! Probaly because their always bein told to by peeps like myself who haveney used it in 8 months.

If (for example) I Flashed CyanogenMod v7.0.3, would I have to sort out S-off first?

And am I right to think I have the correct Radio already (XDA forum says HTC 2.2+) for that particular ROM?

Really I want to try everything, I'd like to see what it can do. For now though GB would be a nice place to start i think. I've already downloaded the Gingervillain 2.5 zip file from a link on the XDA forum. I was also looking at CyanogenMod.

Can I go ahead and Flash either of these now (after partition/backups etc. of course)?
