Root aSSISTANCE rEQUESTED

Good afternoon everyone! I'm new to the Evo and the forums here, but i';m having an issue and i thought i may be able to find assistance here.

I've read a lot of articles online about rooting and such. I work at a fire-station and we don't have wifi but i wanted to be able to complete my online college assignments while there. I tried rooting last night, but i got a message stating "Is your firmware too new?"

I tried several different things after that, i tried rooting while mounted as a drive, i tried a full factory reset. I seem to be at a loss. Like i said i've done research online for quite a bit but a lot of it seems to be old or undated material and it's hard to tell whats current. I would greatly appreciate the assistance any kind souls would offer.

First off welcome to the forum!!!
Next we need a little info.
Power down your phone.
Hold the volume down button, then press and hold the power button, hold both down until a white screen appears. There should be some text listed. Post back with the text you see on this screen. (hboot screen)

How do you know its a "GIngerbread 2.3.3"?

And it's just a waiting game at this point i'm guessing, so how will i know when it may be rooted?

well the dead give away is your hbott version. 2.16 comes with gingerbread. you can also check in your phone as well. phone settings/about phone/software and your android version. and once there is a break we will post (at first on that thread i linked to you) when an exploit is found. once an exploit usually starts out as a temp root meaning that it is temporary and that once you reboot you loose root. but, once temp root is achieved then a full root is very close. once a full root is found and the process is posted up, we will have a sticky on what to do.

Well, the devs are working on it so fear not.

But, it sounds like you mostly want root for a hotspot or tethering. There are ways to get those without rooting (at least tethering, pda net for example). There's a thread around here somewhere about the different tethering options... I'll see if I can find it.

I think this is the one where the OP discusses the different tethering options, including non-root ones (such as pda net).

So if im reading this right and since i'm not rooted, there's only two here i may use."4) Wired tethering using EasyTether (guide coming soon)
5) Wired tethering using PdaNet (guide coming soon)".
Both of which have no guide?

Not trying to be a smart ass, i do appreciate all of your help guys and gals!

PDANet is easy to use. I believe it is $15 after the trial time to access https sites(those with logins). Go to June Fabrics PDA Technology Group and download the program for your windows pc, register it, then download the PDAnet apk from the market. open the apk and turn on tethering then plug your phone into your pc. It should start tethering. It has been a while since I used it but there was really nothing to it.
