Asurion replacement has yellow tint

fezzle

Newbie
Last week I was mugged (which is an interesting story in itself but completely unrelated to my point), and the idiot decided to smash my phone on the ground. Promptly Asurion replaced my phone, but when I compared it to my first phone, I noticed that its screen had a slightly darker and more yellow tint. Naturally I don't like it as much.

I was wondering if they gave me a crap replacement phone and I should call them about this... and maybe they can give me a different one.

On the other hand, I've read that some newer Optimus V have a different screen. I have no idea if this is true, so I'm curious to know if this "yellow" screen is the standard on newer builds. (My new one is Android 2.2.2, while my first was 2.2.1, so that's how I know it's a more recent on.)

Any thoughts? Is it worth contacting Asurion about this? Or should I suck it up?

I have 2.2.1,but have heard there was a slight difference in screen color and brilliance. It looks to me you have more of an issue with the screen than is normal. The only thing to do to to determine for sure would be a side by side comparison with a new "V" or post a screen shot of your home screen.

To post a screen shot read approximately the first 12 posts here http://androidforums.com/lg-optimus-v/286997-post-your-home-screen-captures.html then go to market and get the photo capture app and the photobucket mobile app. Take screen shot. Create account at photobucket. Select upload. Select upload image. Select screen shot. Select done. Select my albums. Select your screen shot. Hit menu key. Select view links. Copy the last link which is an link by long pressing the link, a window will pop up. Select "Copy All".

Come back to this thread and select "edit" under your post. Give yourself a couple of lines of space, then long press the screen near the cursor.
You should see the [IMG] link appear. Hit the save button.

I have read there is a color temperature difference between OV's with the Novatek (old) screen and the Hitachi (new) screen. I've never compared them side by side, though. I don't know what ROM you have, but there is color calibration built into Cyanogen based ROMs. If your not the rooting kind of person you could try this app developed over at XDA. Even though it was developed for a specific phone, others have used on different models with some success. I can't say if it works or not (never needed it, myself) but this ought to give you a gentle shove in the right direction.

I might be growing more used to it... it doesn't bother seem to bother me as much anymore.

Once my replacement SD card arrives (it stopped working after the drop as well), I'm planning on rooting and flashing BACKside ROM, so it sounds like color calibration may be my solution rather than begging Asurion to send me another replacement.

Curiosity has got the better of me. Could you post a screen shot just so we could see how bad it is, or isn't?

Would the screencaps show up differently? It's the backlight that affects the tint, not the software itself, right?

Tried it anyways. Just as I suspected, they look the same.

And holding up the two to my computer screen, the old one matches these photos better in terms of color temp.

I couldn't answer that one truthfully.
You could try asking bigsupersquid he's sort of the 2.2.2 Guru around here and could definitely give you a more technical answer to your question.

EDIT: The new new screen is almost imperceptibly darker. I can't see the yellow tint though.

I notice up in the top left corner (above the MAP app on new phone, and above the Facebook app on old phone...) if you look at the sunlight coming through the tree, you can notice it is more yellow on the new phone. It doesnt seem like a big deal though. I had to look really closely.
