AT&T Corp. Store Confirms Skyrocket Screen Defect

So i've been lurking on this forum for a while trying to decide if i should snag a skyrocket or wait for a quad core phone with ICS. Had quite enough of stupid ios, so I think i'm just going to get one now and use my wife's upgrade in the spring for something else snazzy and pass the rocket off to her.

However, the issues with the screen at low brightness on some phones scares me. Has this issue been resolved with the release of the white model? Also, is there something i can look at in the store to verify that I don't get one with this issue? A picture or movie that's pre-installed on the device? I'd rather not make 4 trips back and forth replacing them.

Thanks!

Its very visable on the screen where you set the brightness. Just put it on the lowest setting and look for the vertical etching as pictured in the other threads. The issue occurs on some devices...white or black. Right mow at least it appears to be luck of the draw
PS...over the next few days I will be tidying up the skyrocket forum and do plan on merging all of these screen related posts into one thread. Just wanted to give you a heads up.

Jeez people its not that bad! Don't put your phone on lowest brightness..

I have a Rogers lte and i'm fine with it.
:o

Though I disagree with your opinion and how you share it (I think I mentioned that before ;)) I do agree there are far too many posts on this.

I plan on merging these tomorrow.

I've received my 3rd replacement phone just yesterday but the screen issue was still there. So I called Rogers just now and my 4th phone is on its way. If I find that the new replacement also has the issue, I'm planning on switching to a different device.

(jaydee77ca - Just like what spikeithard have said above, you could decide to settle with it, however; many people including myself, chose to do everything we could do on our end so that we can find a device without that specific issue)

(Mr. Ed - I apologize for creating another thread. I will start posting on the 'mega' post once you merge them)

Yesterday @ a local San Francisco AT&T corporate store I got confirmation from both a sales person & a tech person of a screen defect that is present in both my Galaxy SII Skyrocket & another Skyrocket at the store.

The defect is only perceptible in very low light room conditions, viewing dark content. For example we viewed the black screen streaming the opening credits of Apocalypto in an adjacent room w/ the lights off & only ambient light from a couple of monitors; but it is visible w/ any content in the viewing conditions mentioned.

When holding the screen in landscape view w/ the Samsung logo on the right, a thin black vertical line appears about an inch or so from the right side of the screen. There are also small black blotches & another black line running vertically along the left side of the screen. When noticed they become VERY obvious & visible, especially as your eyes become accustomed to the dark; about a minute or so.

The tech person had no record of any complaints or notices from Samsung. It appeared obvious to all of us there that the IDENTICAL DEFECTS appearing in 2 completely seperate Skyrockets means this is most probably a defect common to ALL Skyrocket screens & simply replacing the unit wouldn't solve anything.

Please check your Skyrockets & if confirmed contact & report this issue to the seller & Samsung. Don't hesitate to go down & demonstrate the defects to the store as once its pointed out its very obvious & impossible to deny. If this is truelly a screen defect the only resolution would be an acknowledgment from Samsung & a screen fix & product replacement for all such Skyrockets. This will only happen w/ enough complaints & pressure to resolve this problem.

I'm sorry, but I can't ask store personnel to grant me access and accompany me into to a dark closet so they can look at my phone with the brightness level turned down to unreasonable levels to view some "defect". Turn up your brightness and get out of the closet. The world will look better. My phone looks fine despite trying to find this "issue." Maybe I need a stronger magnifying glass?? If it's so very hard to see, maybe people shouldn't be looking so hard...

As I have stated before...this issue exists on some devices and not others. If you can't see it you don't have it.

After owning multiple skyrockets and seeing it on two of the five.. I can tell you that the problem is out there and if you had it , you would know.

The EASIEST way to show the issue off is exactly how he described.

Telling people to turn brightness up and ignore it is no different than taking a car in for a funny noise at 30mph and the tech saying "don't drive 30mph"

If you (everyone) have a great device that is fantastic, no reason to try and discredit those that do. It is real. It has been documented and users with the issue should attempt to get it resolved.

Hi Mr.Ed, i bought skyrocket but didnt realize it has this defect with screen, can you tell me how to reproduce the error or how to capture the screenshot as your post.

I did set to the lowest setting for brightness but i am not sure if my phone has that defect. Other than brightness setting, is there any other way to show that defect.

thanks much

just used another camera to take the picture

as you can see in the pics, it is visible on the brightness adjustment screen

1. dim or turn off lights
2. menu.settings.display.brightness =adjust to lowest
3. take picture with a camera

some have it worse than others, it can be seen under any circumstances

I agree with you in principle but now we have people who don't notice anything wrong with their phones returning/exchanging them based on... nothing. I'm stupified that people would take back a phone they don't have a problem with and risk ending up with one they DO have a problem with.

Yeah you got me on that one.

Every phone I returned had visible issues....very hard to ignore very obvious

Our current devices sure I can nit pick and find issues, but nothing like the bad ones

Yeah I've been having the same line and dots issue. Apparently it affects only the Qualcomm based GSII's. Samsung didn't recalibrate the screens for the different chipset. That's why the regular GSII on AT&T doesn't have any problems since it uses Samsung's chipset. Some people are saying that Samsung could fix the issue with a software update. I'm gonna wait until the Skyrocket HD comes out and see if I can complain to AT&T enough for them to let me return my Skyrocket and just pay the difference.

i'm pretty sure skyrocket HD won't be released in the U.S. they were released nearly side by side in korea, and galaxy s3 will be released soon in asian countries. I know U.S. is usually few months behind but i don't think they'd release a new phone once a month

I wish you were right..but Samsung is flooding the market with options to compete with the iPhone 5

They have released a new device every month in the us for the past 6 months...they just have not all been high profile devices

got a warranty replacement yesterday with an insane amount of screen lines...called into warranty and they confirmed it is listed as a known defect and they are shipping another warranty replacement

How did you go about getting them to exchange it? I've been noticing the lines on mine more and more lately. I got mine back in November, but I'm assuming it has a year warranty against defects...

yup...warranty center is 1-800-801-1101 i think. I explained the screen had thousands of etched lines under the glass and he said "i see here this is a documented warrant defect, we will process and send you another replacement"

Out of curiosity, did you just do something like a Nandroid backup on your old phone and transfer it to the new one? The issue of reinstalling everything has given me pause in exchanging...

Also, that phone number seems odd. I'm guessing you mean 1-800-xxx-xxxx but i think something got lost in translation! :)

I also noticed this with my phone and was severely disappointed that it was happening. I keep the screen on the lowest setting to preserve battery.

How did you guys go about complaining about this problem? Who did you call? Where did you go? I bought mine at Best Buy a couple weeks ago, so I still have a short bit to get this figured out before the 30 days is up.

If you bought it and are still in the 30 days take it back to best buy.. this way you get a new phone not a refurb...i am shocked that one would keep the sr over having the note that releases Sunday . ....

J...

That is the number they gave me...but you can also call tech support and request to speak with the warranty department

Yes...the note is the phablet with 720 screen. I wish i could get one but I am stuck with my skyrocket

Simeone asked if i make a nandroid and restore on a new phone. i prefer to start from scratch just in case. i backup apps and restore those though.

Here are the pics i promised

it's pretty interesting looking at 4 skyrockets all lined up together..

our two originals and the two replacements sent.

It definitely looks like at least two different screens have been used in production

one which exhibits the lines, along with over saturated colors and blacker blacks

another with minimal lines, i mean barley there, and a soft blueish hue to the screen itself.
