What folks? So im new to using twrp but not rooting etc, however im lil lost with twrp. So ive been messing around with roms and stuff trying to figure out which one i like and stuff and obviously before i install whatever rom im gonna test next i backup previous rom, then i wipe data cache and dalvik cache and format data blah blah. Point is that when i go to restore my backup its nowhere to be found what the hell am i doing wrong?

Hahaha boy am i stupid just read what the format data does in twrp removes backups hmmmm maybe reading the warning in full instead of assuming what it says and thinking i know what im doing would of been helpful to myself sorry for waste of post mod feel free to remove lol

Whoa, wait a second here LOL....
First off, I use twrp also...when you say format data, I assume it formats the internal memory? (assuming your backups went there instead of the external sd card)
I have never fomatted data,---is that different than factory reset via twrp?

Also, what device/carrier do you have?

I have att galaxy s3 soon to be flashed to h20 wireless, and yeah i was formatting data instead of doing factory reset because i was wrongly assuming if i did do a factory reset it would wipe internal sd where the backups automatically go. Im new to twrp always used cwm... im using twrp because its highly recommended and been suggested so much on xda and the forums for the roms ive been messing with.... lmao at myself so much time lost now on behalf for formatting data... not really sure what formatting data truly does just wanted to wipe everything possible when changing roms

inside of twrp right now says the following "format data will wipe your apps, BACKUPS,pictures, videos, media, and removes encryption on internal storage."

Id guess formating data is the same as doing a factory reset in the phones stock settings, wipes everything from the internal user/data partition?
Idk tbh, ive always used CWM or Philz and they only wipe apps and app data. Backup files dont get touched

yeah know what you mean im used to cwm like you said doesnt wipe backups, only problem i ever had with cwm was sometimes having to create the backup folder within the cwm folder, still getting used to twrp

me neither till i actually read it haha
i was just trying to be careful messing around with a new toy and didnt want to do what is known as a "dirty install', so im assuming all you have to do is wipe cache, dalvik, data and factory reset then install rom and your good to go? Thats how its done with cwm

I usually factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, then flash. (nandroid first tho :) )
Most of the time, not always, the roms' download page/thread will tell you, but if not....that's how I duz it ;)

Yeah. some people format /system too but if you read the text thats happening when you flash a rom, the first thing it does is format /system so i dont think its necessary :)

okay thanks for the info guys!!!
lol just mad at self cuz i was customizing my rom for like a hour or so last night good thing its a xmas gift got a cpl weeks left thankfully.
so to clarify for myself when changing roms all i need to do is backup factory reset install rom and gapps and then im good to go?

oh yeah that i got down just twrp newbie now on to recustomizing rom again oh the agony looks like ill be late to work tomorrow haha...

btw this phone is gift for daughter lucky brat im still rocking transform ultra ehh there is a theme that shes gonna love however its not 4.3 friendly still 4.2.2 based meaning everything gets themed except for dialer therefor using a 4.2.2 rom is there anyway i can fix that for myself or do i have to wait for theme to get updated?
