Atrix impressions vs Inspire

UPDATE:

6. Car dock - Rocks. Love it. People hear me fine on speakerphone and I hear them perfectly. As soon as you pop the phone in the dock it recognizes its in the car dock and renders a car friendly screen. Well done. I wish they had something like this for the Inspire.

On the inspire.
Press the "All apps button"->car Panel App.

You can add it to a home screen and place it in some kind of an aftermarket doc. press the car panel button and voila, problem solved.

UPDATE:

OK, full day using the Atrix 100% of the time. Here are some of my thoughts.

1. Battery life - Its good. Surfed the web, received about 15 SMS messages, about 275 exchange emails, 50 gmail emails, twitter and facebook updating all day, made over 40 short calls and spent about 2 hours on phone calls give or take. Battery is about 40%.

2. Screen - Text is crisp and clear, web pages are crisp and clear. I have no problem with "warping" as some people have mentioned. It seems strong to me. Screen is bright but colors still seem washed out a bit, especially yellows. I also noticed some unresponsiveness when tapping letters on the keyboard or tapping icons, but that just may be some fat fingering. I did not notice this problem on my Inspire.

3. Overall speed - This phone is fast no doubting that. I did have a few sluggish incidents, but not enough to complain. Is it faster than the Inspire? Not that I notice.

4. Motoblur - Really not a fan. Just not impressed but this is a personal preference and everyone has their opinions on that.

5. Apps - I noticed at least one app that I tried not rendering properly. Not sure why. It is just a game that I tried that a co-worker said was a good time waster, but for me it did not play properly. He showed me the game on his Inspire, and it worked fine. This could be an isolated incident.

6. Car dock - Rocks. Love it. People hear me fine on speakerphone and I hear them perfectly. As soon as you pop the phone in the dock it recognizes its in the car dock and renders a car friendly screen. Well done. I wish they had something like this for the Inspire.

7. FingerPrint Reader - Again, I really like it. Not much to say about it since it works without a problem. Not once did it not recognize my fingerprint. In fact, I thought, maybe its not working so I had a co-worker try it and it would not allow him access to the phone.

8. GPS - Rock solid. Instantly found me correctly. Used it in the car dock and it was very accurate.

9. Motoblur (Social Networking) - Not working for me at all. There are a few motoblur widgets that are supposed to update based on my facebook account. Facebook app always updates, the motoblur widgets never updated once. Not sure what the problem is there.

Overall I like the phone better than I did yesteday, but I am leaning toward returning it. I really just prefer the Inspire and the larger screen not to mention the price.

I will continue to use the Atrix tomorrow and make my mind up by the weekend.

I realize alot of this is personal preference, but hopefully it helps someone who is considering both phones.

Hmmm.. So your first post suggested you wanted to return Atrix & this post suggests Atrix is great! Not good for people who will not return to see your updated review & end up buying some other phone..

Jobs is not as bad as you think. If you ever get a chance to watch biography on A&E (i think).....see if you can find the one on Pixar studios...it will change how you look at Steve. He is hard working, dedicated, innovative, and understands people and how to make something successful. Questionable marketing and buisness practices or not.

Have to agree I don't get the hate towards jobs. You don't wanna use the products don't you do go for it that's the free market

Not sure where I ever said the Atrix is great. Overall I think my post conveys I am disappointed with the Atrix overall. There are things I like, and some I don't. Car dock- great, battery - great. Motoblur - not great, apps not working - not great - Screen - washed out - not great, speed - no different than the Inspire.

I am trying not to be biased in any way and in the post clearly state again that I will probably return the Atrix since I prefer the Inspire.

I am just trying to give an honest opinion of the phone and point out the good and the bad. It comes down to personal preference as I stated. For me, this phone is no better than, and in fact in my opinion not as good as the Inspire and for the price, it makes more sense to me to probably return it.

If someone can live with the issues I raised and they don't mind spending double or more than the Inspire, then that is their choice.

I know about the car panel, but didnt realize there are 3rd party car docks. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks a bunch for posting this man! Can you compare battery lives? That's the only flaw I find on the Inspire, but still love it.

You do realize he's not a professional reviewer right? He stated this was "mostly personal preference" so if somebody returned the Atrix and bought another phone, that's on them.

Personally, I like your small review. The only thing that I liked about Atrix was the bigger battery (Blur, dual core, dock, etc. doesn't appeal to me at all). I'm sad to hear that the Atrix's battery is good. I hoping some bigger battery replacements come out for the Inspire... but I doubt it. Also, the One Click Root for Atrix is a + in my book as well.

Quick question since you've used both. The day of release of the Inspire I posted a thread on custom ringtone sound quality. Basically, I edited some mp3's to make them into shorter ringtones (used the EXACT same file I used on my now deceased Captivate) and transferred them over to the Inspire. The sound quality was horrible when the phone rang. Didn't happen on the Captivate. How's sound quality on the Atrix?

Anyway, hope you enjoy whichever phone you end up choosing!

Try downloading Zedge and using those sounds I find they are MUCH louder;)

I did dl Zend and love it a couple days ago thanks to your suggestion. Still find the speaker phone to be not loud enough, but I will live with that. Coming from the Captivate, either one of these phones are lightyears better, but the Inspire seems to be a better fit for me.

My battery on the Inspire is great. It lasts me the entire work day and all night until I hit the sack. I just got the Atrix and it would take a few days until I can make a comparision.

***Note, this is my opinion only. Your opinion may vary and I respect that, so please respect mine.***

OK, after a couple more hours and some more playing and comparing to the Inspire, I am about 95% sure I will be returning the Atrix and keeping the Inspire.

The hype of the Atrix just does not live up to the expectations. IMHO. Add that to the fact that I was not planning to, and am not going to use the Laptop dock or the media dock, and this phone just does not justify the price. (I paid $299). If I were going to use the docks, that would be another story maybe.

I paid $79 for the Inspire. It is just as fast as the Atrix, has a bigger screen (which I really like), has a better feel to it (more solid), and Sense just blows Motoblur away.

The Inspire has some shortfalls, but overall I have not owned a better phone. I do not mind the "dots" on the screen, barely see them and then only in certain light and certain angles. The battery is more than satisfactory (so far), I can get around the low volume of the alerts and ringtones by using Zend, and I can live with the speakerphone not being loud enough for me.

I cannot think of a legit reason to pick the Atrix over the Inspire at this time. I keep thinking "Give the Atrix more time" but I think I am just putting off the inevitable.

Now before people start telling giving me crap, this is MY preference only. Some people obsolutely love the Atrix, and I wanted to, and I understand for some people, the Atrix is the phone to have. I was excited for it when it was announced in Jan, but if I am being honest with myself, it just does not live up to the hype.

If dual-core was important to me, I might keep it, but honestly, the Inspire will hold me over until better dual-core phones come out, and as we all know, 6 months or a year from now there will be another killer phone that blows away both the Inspire and the Atrix and I'd rather hold on to my upgrade for that number until then.

So for those of you on the fence, I recommend the Inspire unless you:

1. Will use the docks - or
2. Prefer a smaller screen - or
3. Prefer a small footprint - or
4. Prefer Motoblur over Sense - or
5. Can't stand the Inspire screen-door affect.
6. Really want/need the dual-core processor, although not many things will take advantage of it for some time yet.

Or any combination of the above...

I hope this helps people still deciding a little.

I am not a fan of the sound quality of the Inspire. I may have a bad/lemon speaker so since I am most likely keeping the Inspire, I am going to bring it to the store to see if there is a difference between mine and another unit. If so, I will swap out, if not, it may be that I am a bit picky, but I don't think so.

I have not tried to use mp3's (I assume songs) as ringtones as I work in an office environment at client sites and prefer, actually need, professional sounding ringtones. Having the latest Eminem song playing when someone calls me at a client site just does not convey the most professional image. So I prefer simple sounding beeps. Currently I use the Nextel beep as my ringtone from Zend. I love it, and multiple people have already asked how they can get it.

The Atrix speaker is great. No issues that I could find. Speakerphone was lound and clear and when asked people on the other end of the line had nothing but positive things to say.

Have to agree I don't get the hate towards jobs. You don't wanna use the products don't you do go for it that's the free market
Let me clarify:

1) There's no hate for Jobs. Just a very strong dislike for his _current_ (not past) tactics.

2) I've been a long time Apple computer user and have never bashed them. That's a fact. There's a very big difference between bashing, and simply sharing a critical viewpoint.

3) I happen to truly like (most) of their products. I'm currently enjoying one of the best laptops in their line. It's a 15" fully loaded MacBook Pro. My twelfth New Apple Laptop. Not bragging but making the point that I put my money into good products.

Out of those, none have had any problems of significance. So you see, I'm actually quite fond of Apple. So much so, that I'm a huge shareholder.

4) Please do not mistake my openness, candor, and outspoken ways, for hate. I'm _very_ passionate about the tech business, not hateful.

5) Finally, I'm very open to progress & change, that's simply a fact. I'm also a huge advocate of continuing education and R & D. I look for the good in all people & things without fail.

Cheers :)

Hi kstruck,

can you compare the photo quality of inspire and atrix? I really wanna see someone put the picture side by side to compare, thanx

Just from reading the Inspire forum im starting to think that either A) some people.have bad batteries or B) some people dont charge their phones correctly or C) some people do everything.they possibly can to get great battery life and the inspire just doesnt cut it with their heavy usage cause I get 15+ hour days off of my inspire even with those heavy days..

To each his own but so far my battery has been great so.the Atrix isn't an option..let us know.more though because I love hearing about new phones

A)possible, but not an epidemic
B) lithium ion doesn't need to be "charged correctly"
C) there are so many variables in considering anecdotal evidence. What's "heavy" to someone may equal "mod" to someone else. Maybe someone is only answering emails all day with the lowest brightness and 1 account on push and they consider it "heavy usage", while another is playing games and viewing flash videos all day in the sun and is comparing his "heavy usage" to the other person and is going to be disappointed. Not to mention expectations. If I'm under 30% and near a charger, I'm putting it on the charger because I may need to go somewhere or be without a charger (I'm somewhat spontaneous). While someone else may know they're not doing anything that night and is content to let the battery get down all the way.

All that said, inspire does a pretty good job with 1250mh battery. Android is the hog though, and anyone who puts battery first should consider iphone first, not atrix.

Well put. I gave up ever expecting to see meaningful battery data on forums due to exactly what you said. So many of the parameters needed to produce real results are missing, and all we're left with "I used it a lot and it lasted for 16 hrs!" What number do we assign to "a lot."

The only thing that matters is if the Inspire makes it through a day of your usage. All this contrived battery-drama doesn't mean anything.

Just got the Atrix about 3 hours ago. Spent about 2 hours setting things up.

First, I am not impressed with the Atrix screen at all. The yellows are really off and the colors in general look washed out. To me the Inspire screen has better color and seems more vibrant.

Motoblur - Never used it before and having used Sense, I can say I really do not like Motoblur at all. It may take some time getting used to it, but Sense is overall better IMHO.

Screen size - I really like the screen size of the Inspire compared to the Atrix. 4.3 vs 4 makes a difference. I also like the size of the Inspire itself, but that is just a personal preference.

Build - I like the feel of the Inspire better. Seems more solid. Atrix is not cheap feeling at all, but Inspire has a better feel.

Speed - Both are fast and so far I do not notice a difference at all.

I like the fingerprint reader -some added security is not a bad thing and it works well.

Just a quick impression and I am sure I will find things I like better as time goes on. It has only been three hours, but the Inspire impressed me immediately, the Atrix not so much.

Unless things change drastically, the Atrix is probably going back.

I really wanted to like the Atrix, and I hope things change. I am not going to use the laptop dock or the media dock but I did try the car dock, which I really like. Hate having my phone sitting on the console or in my lap while I am driving. Car dock makes it easy to use and secure.

I totally agree. As a Atrix owner, I am returning it becasue of said reasons as listed above.

it seems it does for 99% of the owners on this forum and yet people still post about battery life worries so what other evidence can people use, I mean some even list their activity through out the day, but people see the 1230 mah and bug out even after they have been told 1 million times that its all good

I found this thread, and registered for it because I'm currently trying to debate between these two devices.

This is what I've come up with as my personal pros and cons for each:

Atrix:
I like the smaller size
You can uninstall the AT&T bloatware without having to root it
The Dual core processor will eventually come into it's own and be better
The battery is just bigger.
The display is crisper, better resolution
HDMI out
Fingerprint reader
The speaker is plain better. I've played the same Youtube video on both.
16gb of onboard memory vs only 4gb of inspire
1gb RAM
Lapdock possibility

Inspire:
Price is better
Sense is better on many levels (fast boot, built in multi-tasking, better updates, more open to developers)
Camera is better
If i wanted, custom roms a good possibility

I'll be paying retail for whichever one I end up getting. This means it is just a $100 difference in price for me, not double. ($400 vs $500)

I'm not sure if i could get used to such a large phone. I've used 2 phones with 4" screen and that seems to be the perfect size for me. I also have no intention of getting any of the docks, but it's nice to know i could if the price ever drops.

I just can't make up my mind....

Wow you just posted that after reading all the above comments and some of your atrix pros fly directly into the face of this thread lol

I got to play with an Atrix today, and I though it was a really good phone. Now I only used it for about 5 minutes so I didn't go deep with the phone, but I thought the screen looked nice. It felt light, but not cheap, and was very snappy browsing loaded web pages. Unfortunately the phone only had 2 bars of H+ so speeds weren't great.

If you are renewing or signing up for a new contract I'd choose the Atrix only cause it is more future proof than the Inspire. The CPU/GPU combo in the Inspire is already outdated as it is the same combo as the Desire HD which was released back in Oct 2010. Even graphic benchmarks on Galaxy S phones yield higher FPS than the cpu/gpu combo of the Inspire/Desire HD/Mytouch 4g.

Ahh the inspire/ desire HD hater has arrived lol. In actual use more people are getting better use/ functionality from the inspire than they are from the atrix. You played with it for 5 min others including the OP have used the atrix for days and they seem to be choosing inspire over atrix hmmm I wonder why ? Better phone beside the hype and supposed specs of atrix
