Help audio quality

So I've been using my Desire as an MP3 player on my home stereo. I got a 3.5m headphone to RCA cable and ran it directly into my receiver. I'm somewhat underwhelmed. Audio quality doesn't seem that great to me. I haven't done any back to back tests, but compared to say a CD it seems flat.

So this is the first time I've used an MP3/4 player... is this normal? Is it because of the data compression? Headphone jack or cable limitation? Can I improve anything? Is this the 21st century, audio quality is sooo 1997, and I'm too whiny?

to be fair it can be a mixture of ALL of the above...

but mostly its because the mp3 playing side of things for PHONES are always a lil lacking the preamps on board just dont hack it UNLESS they are branded MUSIC phones...such as ALOT of old sony 'walkman' series phones and the nokia music phones too..

You could try testing the same music with different players, like MixZing and PowerAMP. That would test the quality of the players.
Next, you could try testing flac files instead of mp3, to bypass the quality loss due to compression.
Finally, you could just plug in quality headphones (Sennheiser, AKG or Shure) and test the sound quality directly.

The DAC in your cd player is almost certainly going to be of better quality than your phone.

if the mp3 quality is 128 then its probably that.
i mainly have mp3's as 320kbps as its pretty much lossless

you shouldnt have to mess with the eq's although poweramp for me is a superior player

Ooooo try music playerpro now version 2 it has a preamp an EQ just like poweramp...
