Help Auto or manual update to Gingerbread?

I assumed that when 2.3 Gingerbread was available for my Droid X it would automatically update. Instead it took a Verizon rep to let me know that Gingerbread was available. Is this unusual? Shouldn't the OS on my Droid auto update or does everyone have to check and update it manually?

you usually have the check it manually, i know on my phone i have to check it manually in order to get it, even when on froyo, but i dont worry about that now considering im an anomoly

As far as I know, Verizon hasn't pushed the update out to everyone yet.*

Some phones, like our Droid X, have the ability to check for manual updates. Others, like the Droid Incredible, only recieves the update when Verizon pushes it out.

For this Gingerbread release, Verizon made the update available for manual download. At some point in the future, they will push this update out to everyone.

*I could be wrong here, as some of my coworkers haven't mentioned getting the OTA update.

When I sbf'd back to 2.3.340 a while back it popped up on it's own (I cancelled it of course ).

For me, Froyo came automatically, GB I had to do manually.
And if I had it to do over, I'd never update to GB but stay with Froyo.
