Automatic update taking too much memory

jdmac

Lurker
Today's automatic update took over 20MB of my memory. I don't use any of those stock apps, so I went to Manage Apps and deleted the updates. Got my 20 Megs back. Ten minutes later my phone runs all the updates again. My 20MB is gone again. How many times are they going to send me this stuff I don't want? Anybody else unhappy?

The same thing just happened to me and now my phone is out of memory and I can't even receive texts - ugh! I had over 30MB free before the updates and it appears a couple updates failed. I tried clearing caches and history, but they appear to be empty. Is there any way of cleaning out the failed update files so I can get some memory back?

Unfortunately, there's not a lot you can do about it unless you root, or root and install a custom rom that has all that stuff removed already.

I really hate Google for forcing those updates. My loathing for ads, wanting a bit more space, and hating those updates forced me to root and eventually install a custom rom. I simply wasn't happy with my phone until I did.

But doesn't rooting your phone violate the TOS?

If it did, posting about it would be against the forum rules as they (androidforums.com) do not allow you to discuss anything that would violate those terms (your mobile carriers terms). Those are the forum rules.

However, if I am mistaken then it would be nice to hear from the forum admins on why this would be allowed. (I'm not being an ass either.. I sincerely wish to know).

I've heard that it's not against VM's TOS to root because that doesn't violate their data usage policies, but it voids your warranty because LG doesn't want to fix your problems when you do. In any case, the alteration of the phone doesn't affect Virgin Mobile unless you're using their data/connection/etc. differently. And since there's no agreement between you and LG when you buy the phone (since a voided warranty is no problem to them, and you own the device outright) rooting isn't really an issue. At least that's how I understand it.

From VM's Terms of Service - General Terms , Introduction;

. . . The software and content on our mobile phones and devices, including the operating system, applications, data, information, music, games, images, text and other material, are owned by us or our business partners. You are permitted to use this software and content solely in connection with your use of your Virgin Mobile phone or device . . .

. . . If you violate the Terms of Service, including without limitation by using one of our mobile phones or devices on another network without our prior written consent, by modifying any hardware or software on our mobile phones or devices, or by distributing, copying or otherwise using any of the software or content on one of our mobile phones or devices in a manner that is not authorized by the Terms of Service, your license to the software and content will terminate immediately and your continued use will constitute copyright infringement. . . .

Doesn't "rooting" amount to the modification of your phones software?

I'm not a lawyer, but it sounds pretty clear to me.

But doesn't rooting your phone violate the TOS?
Wow! I sure didn't see that until you pointed it out. Hmmm. I don't know how I missed that. I guess it was because it was in the intro and I thought all the important info was in the rest of the booklet.
It's too late for me I already change the OS. I guess I can no longer give help and advice on rooting,or any thing having to do with violating the Terms of Service(My God given conscious will not allow me to due so). I will have to refrain from giving any advice in the "All Things Root" sub-forum as this is clearly a violation of the Terms of Service.

Rooting does constitute a violation of the Terms of service.

Relax AndyOpie, I suspect that your help and assistance is much needed on this site.

After doing a bit more research this afternoon, it appears that while rooting (modifying) your phones software DOES indeed violate VM's TOS, it is certainly not illegal to do so and it's actualy their TOS that is in error.

In July of last year the US Copyright Office, and the Library of Congress, ruled, basically, that it's your phone and you can do whatever you want to with it.

The US Copyright Office says rooting a smartphone is not illegal

While rooting will definitely void your phones warranty, there's really not much that VM can do to prevent it other than to terminate your contract. Oh, but wait, we don't have contracts. Seems as though their TOS document could use a bit of reworking to bring it in line with current Federal law.

I'm sure that this ruling from last year is the primary reason why the subject of rooting is so openly discussed here, and on every other phone forum out there. A welcome bit of comfort and protection for the developers of customized software.

To answer the OP, the same thing happened here. I had to go in an uninstall the updates. Also, make sure "Automatically update" is unchecked in any unwanted app's page in the market.

The low amount of onboard memory is what keeps this device from being a great one. Your average user doesn't know about rooting or visiting a specialized forum for assistance or even uninstalling unwanted updated. I've learned a lot here about managing my phone.

Yeah I've had this problem too, the only thing I can think of that's been said is to go in the Market and click on "uninstall" and then uncheck "allow automatic updating", but please if someone has anything better, then post it!

Is there any resolution to these stupid apps (like where and scvngr) auto-updating other than rooting? Why would they auto-update even if I uncheck that option? I am constantly uninstalling these updates just to be able to use my phone. I shouldn't have to root my phone to stop updates.

I spoke to VM support and they knew nothing. LG support told me I'd have to take my phone to a VM store to update to version 5 of the software to fix it. What VM store?! I've never seen or heard of one in all the years I've been with VM. At least not where I live! When I told them that, they just said to call VM to find one. It was too late to do so, but I'm pretty sure I know what the answer will be.

I used to love VM, but this issue and lack of resolution is making me hate them with a fiery passion.

This doesn't really have anything to do with VM. If you look at several of the other phone forums, they too are having this same issue.

This seems to be more of a Market issue than anything else. The apps that are getting pushed as updates aren't even recent updates (Gmail is an exception, there was a real update for it). Check the recent update dates on most of them at the Market via your PC browser.. one of them shows the last update date as last year.

I'm rooted and have a custom rom installed.. not having any of these issues.

And I'm neither and I haven't gotten any of these forced updates of late, either. Of course, now that I've said it out loud... Honestly, I haven't said anything about all this because I didn't want to sound all "neener, neener; it's not happening to me," but I haven't the slightest idea *why* it's not happening.

Okay, I get that it's not really VM based on what you're saying, but why is rooting the only solution? Auto-updates simply shouldn't happen if you've unchecked that option. It's a malfunction and there must be some solution to it no matter whose "fault" it is.

I might root my phone at some point, but I've never done it before and I have to do it when I'm sure I can afford a new phone if I turn this one into a brick. ;)

Unfortunately, I haven't found any other way other than rooting. Seems no matter if you uninstall the updates and untick the auto update box, Google is hellbent on pushing those updates anyhow. People have been complaining about this for a very long time.

It only seems like it's more prevalent now because of this new thing with Google pushing out updates that we already have. I wish I knew exactly what the problem was (I'm sure someone out there does), but at the moment we're stuck just guessing. :(

Don't be pushed into rooting. Root when you are ready and you feel confident. Or, when you get like me and just can't take it anymore lol.

You dont have to root.

Go to market and uncheck auto updates. Once that is done, DONT power off your phone. For some reason, auto update comes back (at least for me) when I power down.

That's funny how υ portray Gollυm into this thread lol.

Yoυ coυld disable Background Data from Accounts & Sync. That will disconnected the Market and prevent any app from getting syncronized or downloaded. But keep in mind if υ disable/uncheck Background Data, υ won't get any email notification or update notification from the Market to your phoηe.

You know, I was thinking maybe it's not happening to me because I uninstalled the market update from whenever that was. Still not sure.

I turn off my phone every weekday during school, and for a while it kept doing the same and I had to uncheck (okay WTH, firefox? uncheck is a word...) the auto update thing every time it checked for updates after I turned the phone on, but eventually it just stopped. No idea why, I'd love to root but the battery likes to get hot and I don't want to risk it, when it's in a low-signal area or doing certain tasks, it can go over 90

Gollum knows how we suffer! :D

Musick, it doesn't seem to matter whether I power off or not. :/

Oh, gosh! I never did uninstall the market update! I wonder if that could be it?!

I just did it, so if that has any effect on the problem I'll come back and update. Thanks for all your responses guys!

OMG!!! I am practically in a rage! Within minutes of uninstalling the market update, it re-updated itself and tried to update a number of the problem apps! I am so fed up and so angry I don't know what to do!!!!

Even the crap sound back and kick back apps tried to update even though I don't have the "accessibility" thing checked on my phone.

Is this really how it is to have an android phone? It just doesn't seem worth the endless aggravation!
