Avast for Android!

did you have lookout or anythging installed somthing could have linkd a virus to avast so it sees itself as a virus

From the article:

The results don't provide a complete picture, according to MSNBC, since AV-Test failed to include other notable free Android AV apps, including AVG Antivirus Free, BitDefender Mobile Security, Lookout Mobile Security, and Norton Mobile Security.

Nice that they hide this important fact several paragraphs down, towards the end of the article. Additionally, as previously pointed out, Avast hadn't yet been released at the time and therefore was also not reviewed. I've been repairing computers for a living for many years, and IMHO almost all of the most trusted and well-respected industry leaders in AV have been excluded here. Yet, the results from the free apps were compared with those from paid apps by two respected companies, F-Secure and Kaspersky... implying in a very "apples to oranges" sort of way that paying for an AV app is the way to go. The cynic in me wonders if there was a financial reason why this article was so poorly framed. A more appropriate title might be "A Handful of Lesser-Known Free Android Antivirus Apps Fail to Cut It." :P

CNET used to be a highly respected voice in the IT industry, but I don't rely on them nearly as much as I used to. I think responsible reporting is something that has suffered there over recent years, and I consider this article to be just another sad example of that.

Personally, I've been using the free AVG app and will probably switch to the free Avast offering. It's more full-featured, and since Avast started outperforming AVG on the PC several years ago, it seems reasonable that the Android version does, too. Yes, there are zero-day attacks... but something is better than nothing, and at least there's a chance that heuristic scans could catch them before they wreak havoc. HTH, and that we never have to find out.

During the Avast install, for the anti-theft functionality, the user is presented with various choices. For instance, "Direct Write Method" or "Recovery Image Method", and "Modify custom backup list" for CyanogenMod. I have seen a few concerning threads that indicated that uninstalling the anti-theft program was not possible.

Does anyone have recommended settings for the install and/or comments on the uninstall issues?

Thanks!

The uninstall situation and solution appears to be addressed at: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=90796.msg721969#msg721969

and

Uninstalling TheftAware

though I have not tried it.

Charger thing not possible. An app could easily do all that controlled from an outside computer but either you or someone who had your phone would have to install that. There are ligit apps that people use as "security" to remotely do that and they can be hidden but some use these apps for bad things and since they are ligit they will not show up in any anti virus. So if its not just paranoia this could be your cause.

Not delusional and having all that happen would make sense to be slightly paranoid however with the proper apps which I've seen personally available from third party hackers that could stealthily connect via wifi and manipulate your phone even installing these apps I was speaking of. That update isn't to 2.3 it's a "security" update to prevent us from rooting these phones. That update is a bad idea. For you I would recommend rooting then a full wipe clearing all that possible tracking software, Vm tracking software included, and installing a Rom such as backside that does not have those tracking software in them. Then when you feel compromised you just do a full wipe and reinstall the Rom. If anything it will give you a piece of mind and super charge your phone.
