Average Phone Storage on Your EVO?

I am just curious what your phone storage is (talking about on board space not SD card). I was shocked to see only 224mb of free space (I was under the impression the EVO had 1GB), yet I have nothing stored on the onboard memory (well maybe a cumulative 10 mb of apps). The OS should be around 150-200 mb if I am not mistaken, so what is ating all this space?

yea and if you want any good numbers folks should state if they have a custom rom or rooted. dont want to turn this into a rom thread but to get a sense of how one may have less /more than another, that info would be important. also the amount of programs installed on the phone will play a factor. without that info, the memory only number is not much good.

but not sure why you are really shocked as to the amount of memory. 1GB is whats on board but does not include adding 3rd party apps, the OS, etc etc...

I only have 180 MB left. If you use Dolphin Browser, be sure to clean out the cache every so often, or set it to clear the cache on exiting. It stores a LOT of stuff on there, and I cleaned out probably about 80 MB the other day.

that is a little low...

i installed Quick system info:
so that I can see more info on my phone.

EVO on Sprint Lover Rom; with many many apps loaded.
a2sd = 144 free 44
internal storage = 426 free 278
system storage = 350 free 108
system cache = 160 free 53.95
memory = 415 free 155 idle 14.94

... you might want to install the same app.. and give us the same info....so that might confrim if you have an issue.

Stock EVO
a2sd = 181 free 93
internal = 428 free 74
system = 350 free 60
cache = 160 free 148
memory 415 free 125 idle 17

No matter what, I think most can agree, this limit needs to be greatly increased in future phones or moved completely to external storage. Apps2SD is only a bandaid if you ask me as so many things don't take advantage of it. This IMO is the biggest flaw to Android devices.

I have a 16gig card in my EVO, with 10 gigs free and still cant add anything new unless I delete another app first. Thing is I don't have a lot installed just some, like Tango, use 10+ megs each.

I have another device with 16 gigs and you can use all of it minus what the OS uses.

specs at original launch date factory wiped retail state -

HTC EVO 4G
512MB RAM (Operating Memory)
1GB ROM Internal Storage (358MB Available after OS, Bloatware, etc.)
8GB microSD Card External Storage

i have about 250MB free of Internal Storage left. i'm a minimalist. my rule on Apps is - if i don't use it - i delete it.

i love my EVO but i think the one area that Sprint scrimped on was Internal Memory. Sprint dictates the specs to HTC. Sprint is the customer and Sprint sets the specs and the final retail price. if Sprint wants X - Sprint gets X.

whats the best way to clear out all the junk and clutter left behinde. should i do a hard reset ?

i have 59mb on internal with like all my games on sd card.

and if i do a hard reset on my EVO whats the pros and cons....

i think Android is pretty good at clearing out junk and clutter after uninstalling apps. but i think also when you move apps to the card - they still use some internal memory.

one way to free up some internal memory is to go to settings--->apps--->manage apps----> and then go to each app and clear the data cache. only do this with apps that you don't care if your old data is lost for that app as it will reset it to zero. this is good to do for crapware apps that you might have just tested and played with but will never use again. another thing to do is to go into those crapware app settings and make sure they are not set to continually update data. set to manual and clear out the items.

maybe do a backup of everything first just in case.

be careful and good luck.

ok... for those that are ROOTED and if you are comfortable messing with partitions; Not for the faint of heart.

did you notice all the "lost free space" in System storage and cache???

You can reclaim that and move it to your internal storage area!!!!!!!
I have used it for my Hero and it made it 100% better phone.
they have taken the same mod and tweeked it for the EVO.

I highly suggest you read the whole thread and the links! before you attempt this. I do not take any responsibility in any issues or problems that you might face!

with dolphine hd browser you can under the settings have the chache set to the sd card. I think it is a crime when they say it has 1gb of storage. they should under law say what the free space is also as that is what is really available to us. they should also let us uninstall any apps like reader or blockbuster if we dont want them.

HTC Mobile Phones - EVO Sprint - Overview

That was big news at launch, the Evo was a Desire-class phone and doubled its ROM. For whatever reason, they trimmed the RAM back to 512 MB.

Like most specs, their only use is in first-look comparison shopping. Last I looked (and this may have changed) when you buy a new laptop, they don't say how much of your hard drive will be free - more is simply better and all vendors play the same game.

Agree that it's a hanging offense that we get bloatware - what's that saying? Millions for upgrades, not one byte for tribute! That's how I feel about that.

I sort of bailed on this thread with XMAS and all... sorry!

basically, I am shocked because I thought the OS itself should take up around 250mb of space. That leaves us with 750. On top of that I have MAYBE 50mb (huge overestimate) of third party apps here. Anything and everything that can be stored on the SD card is there. I simply don;t understand where all that space went. I mean am I incorrect about the space the OS takes up? It would have to be upwards of 700mb and I just didn;t think that was the case.

I'll be honest I didn't realize this storage space was partitioned. I think I found my answer.

This is where I think the vast majority of Android devices falls short, and I don't understand why. Well, I do understand cutting costs, but seriously? Throwing on at least 4 gigs on a mass-produced product shouldn't kill their profits. I have next to nothing (as far as apps) on my phone. It's a little bit worrisome to think how much I might have to watch myself in the future with downloads. I can honestly say this is the one HUGE thing that I dislike about this phone versus the iPhone 4 I came from.

Well - I'm not clear just how much Sprint specifies or how they know what to specify.

The Evo is a Desire-class phone. If I were less than wizardly, I'd ask for double what a Desire has, negotiate with HTC and think I came out OK with 1gb rom/512mb ram.

I like the leveling approach being taken by the Nexus S - 16 GB of memory, period. Aside from no SD card, that looks like a pretty smart move to me. (Isn't that basically the same as the iP4 memory scheme, btw?)

I have about 170mb on my fresh 3.5 ROM. I understand a lot of people frustration with this and I agree that the internal storage should be increased for future devices. I guess I don't complain much in this department because I'm coming from a Sprint Hero and that thing had NO internal storage (it was a ridiculously low).

After about 14-18 apps you better be careful unless you wanted a low on internal memory message. With the Evo I've downloaded about 3x as many apps as I would on my old Hero and I'm happy. I dont keep apps for too long unless I'm not done with them in use.

I will say this though. I was playing with a co-workers Incredible and looked at her internal storage sitting at like 6gb's. It did make me desire more internal memory...

Dude... the Incredible only has half the internal storage space as the Evo. HTC Mobile Phones - DROID INCREDIBLE Verizon - Overview

personally I think they skimped on system ram. I'm pinning that out way more frequently then my internal storage. Though I would like more. I'm hoping they move to 3-5gb's internal and keep external cards.

I'm using the mykfroyo rom. I've slimmed down my app usage, but I still have a fair amount installed. 319 free at tho moment.

doesn't the Incredible have an extra 8GB of Internal Storage?

Compare

Incredible = Flash 8GB + 512MB /RAM 512MB

EVO = 1GB ROM/ 512MB RAM

I'll be honest I didn't realize this storage space was partitioned. I think I found my answer.

I am rooted. When I move my cache to the sd partition it frees up almost 100mb of space. So prior to moving cache to sd I had 275 free. After....354 free. You can create a larger partition size, but I've yet to see a reason why anyone wants or needs more than 500 or maybe 1g.

Also there is a difference between the Apps2SD app and the a2sd program that is used when partitioning. A lot of apps like and need to be located on the internal memory in order for them to run better. Partitioning allows this. Actually moving them to the sd card via Apps2SD can create a mess.
