B+N new eReader announced May 24th.

Looks like B+N will be bringing out a new eReader soon. Barnes & Noble to release new e-reader, according to securities filing -- Engadget for details.

No news as to what it will be - speculation is a Honeycomb device, presumably with better processor, maybe with 3G? But could be an upgrade to the standard Nook (with ads perhaps?) at super-cheap pricepoint...

I've just bought my NC and rooted it, and am very happy with it indeed - best value for money on the market. But I'm struggling to get a chance to use it - have to fight off the kids with a stick to have a go - so if I had to spec out a wish list for improvements, I'd go with:

Honeycomb - of course
Faster processor - always need more speed
GPS - I'd love proper GPS for navigation
Great video support
More and more usable internal memory
Magic surface that repels sticky kidfingers
Price <$300 still

Thats all - how about you? What would you really like to see in a new Nook?

My money is on something like the Kindle DX (maybe eInk, maybe color). Basically the same as either the Nook B/W or NC but bigger.

In order to use Honeycomb on a retail tablet, certain minimum h/w requirements are needed, like a higher resolution screen.

Why do you need more speed on a ereader? So you can turn pages faster?

Adding GPS would probably increase the asking price and, again, why would you put GPS on an ereader?

More usable memory -- for what? 5 gigs of usable space isn't sufficient?

Let me be clear, the Color Nook is not a tablet, it is an enhanced ebook reader. I don't really understand why folks are trying to get it to do more than what it's designed to do. That is like buying a Ford Fiesta and souping it up to be a Mustang.

I think a lot of it is due to the fact people aren't exactly willing to pay in the $500 range to get a tablet, many of which probably haven't even experienced owning a tablet as of yet.

If I were going to get into street racing I wouldn't go all the way up the food chain for my first purchase either, I'd start low and see if I enjoyed it first. If I didn't know whether a tablet was for me, I'd definitely get something smaller and cheaper. Granted it's not like a 10" tablet or anything, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper.

I don't think my first purchase would be a Ford Fiesta, either. :P

If they aren't willing to spend the $500 for a tablet, they need to at least stop expecting the Nook Color to be one. This is not rocket science.

What exactly is it that a "real" tablet can do that the Nook cannot? Really, I am curious.

Why are you so mad about what other people are doing? lol

Why do people try to get their phones to do more than they were designed to do?

Thank you, I thought maybe I was going insane for a minute there.

P.S. Love the username. XD

A "real" tablet, for one, has access to the full Android Market and lets you access the full Android OS.

As to why I'm mad, the same issue exists here as with my phone (Huawei Ascend). People buy it and then express displeasure that it doesn't do what higher priced devices do. I am completely bumfuzzled as to the rationale behind that. It may be that people just like to complain.

I can't imagine.

No one is complaining here though. And my Nook has full market access and runs a full Android OS. So what is the difference?

I have never used a "real" tablet before so I really do not know.

Yes, it is rooted and running a custom rom. I had a bit of a snafu at the beginning but it was the first device I ever rooted. Overall it is very easy and can be done in about 20 minutes.

you don't even need to root to run android you just burn it to an Sd card and when you pop it in full android tablet with all of functionality of any other tablet and when you take it out stock B&N. For better performance you should flash to the system memory. If you do end up doing it (and I do recommend it highly) try CM7 first. You can even overclock the CPU very easily if you want even faster performance. A Nook Color is a full tablet B&N just didn't want to compete with apple so they made it an E-Reader.

They did it to sell books, but threw on a few features to compete with tablets.

I've never read a book on mine, in fact never created an account with B&N.

I have never read a book on mine either but my wife uses hers for e-books. I thought you had to make a B&N account during set up though?

I am thinking about making a visit to Project Gutenberg though since most of what I am interested in reading is in the public domain anyhow.

I went straight to Phiremod with my NC.

I have since read that you need to register it with B&N (and with a CC I believe), because if you do a factory reset and have never registered, you won't be in their system and won't be able to create an acct.

I bought mine for a tablet so that doesn't bother me.

I tried that but I couldn't figure out how to install apps on it. I couldn't figure out how to link it to Market or Appbrain.

I just purchased my Nook Color, I am wondering should I return, and wait until the 24th to find out what the new e-reader will be?

I'm pretty sure the new e-reader is going to be an update to the e-ink Nook.

This. There's no reason why BN would pull the NC right now. It's their hottest product. There's no reason why they would cannibalize it's sales with a locked down HC e-reader that really wouldn't add any extra functionality. I'll put my money on a $99 e-ink reader that will compete with the Kindle.

Here's a thought: wait until B&N actually makes an announcement and tells everyone what the new e-reader will be.
