Root Back to stock

I want to go back to stock with this old S4- Gti9505, and sell it on. I have the backup file sitting in the root folder of the SD card.
When I go into the recovery bit- (Power, home and Vol up)- the TWRP screen appears. If I then tap Restore- there is nothing appearing on the screen- apart from Internal. I was under the impression that the backup file has to be on the root directory of SD card.
If I tap Advanced, then File Manager on twrp screen, the restore file is there, but can't get it onto the Restore page of twrp. I did start to download stock rom, but it was going to take too long tonight- will do it in morning. USB debug has not got to be activated has it ?

Any ideas please ??

Use TWRP to make a backup. The folder it puts it in will be something like /storage/sdcard0/TWRP/backups/(phone-info)/here. (Should show the build name in the ROMs about device section.)

You need to put the backup you want to restore in this same directory underneath your new backup. Now when you boot to TWRP and click restore it will show both of them.

If you are downloading the stock rom it will probably be in an odin flashable format... So the above process isn't gonna work. I was under the impression you were trying to restore a nandroid.

Thanks. I will try to return the S4 to stock then sell it on. I bought wife a Moto G4 2016. She loves it.
I will not be rooting anymore, certainly not my Note 4. I did two S3's and a 7" Galaxy Tab 2--rooted and 6.01 Marshmallow.
Just to be one of very few in area to have latest O/S on an old phone, lol. :):D

Not got around to getting this phone back to stock o_O.
One question though- what would happen if I did a factory reset with this Resurrection Remix rom on this phone-- ie; naff up completely, or go back to start with RR rom, and then download any new updates itself ???
Thanks

Tried to factory reset phone-S4- just ended in a twrp screen bootloop-- screen will not do anything other than show twrp like lock screen. Any tips on how to get back some phone functionality, or should I just put phone under wheels of an articulated truck, lol ??? Probably naffed it up good and proper now.

It is still a Samsung. Download firmware from sammobile and flash through Odin. To get into dl mode, turn the phone off and press and hold vol-, home, and power.

When I turn on phone, it goes straight into a twrp screen loop- only way to stop is pull battery. It will go into download mode when I vol down home and power.
The downloaded Sammmobile stock rom is on pc- I thought it had to be on SD card .
Don't know what to do to carry on.
What is correct version of Odin to use- there are so many ??
Thanks

The newer version will work just fine with the S4 and at the bottom of the Sammobile download page where you got the stock firmware, there should be instructions for flashing and a link to Odin.

Got the instructions off Sammy site. Got Odin 3.11.1 on puter. Extracted rom files to puter and extracted Odin as well.
The stock rom file icon is showing a bloody internet explorer E sign and it will NOT be put in AP/PDA box. I've had this before, so I disabled explorer. Hate IE with a passion.
I was going to download the stock rom again via google, but thinking explorer will get in there somewhere again. Can always re enable explorer. This pc is on Win 10 Pro.
Getting there slowly. Thanks for all input.

Downloaded firmware again from Sammobile tonight.
When I get Odin 3.11.1 going and try to drag the firmware to AP box, it just will NOT go there. I have followed instructions from Sammy site.

Did you unzip the firmware file?
After you connect your phone in download mode to your PC with Odin open, you should select AP, then scroll to where you extracted the firmware and select it.
When Odin is satisfied that the firmware checks out, it will let you select the start button.

Thanks Jfalls63 for your help. Been to quiz night in local club tonight, so will look at the S4 in morning.
It is only the non movement of stock rom that is dragging me to a stop, lol.
Still got my 2 S3's to mess with though.

The unzipped stock file will NOT go into the AP box- tried all ways. I did wonder if stuffing the nandroid backup file into AP box, or will that kill off the S4 altogether, lol ??

When you unzipped the firmware, there should have been a tar.md5 file. That is what you look for to put in the AP slot.
Your nandroid backup will not work with Odin.

What I usually do to make things easier to find, I create a file in MY DOCUMENTS on the PC. Name it S4. After I download the firmware from Sammobile, I extract the firmware to the S4 file.
When I click on AP, I scroll to my documents, S4, and select the tar file.

Still not playing ball.
Got the sammy file downloaded and extracted. Odin 3.11.1 extracted.
Power, vol down and home buttons held. When the download screen shows on phone, I push vol up to go into download mode. Connect phone ( tried it with USB 2 and USB3- no difference). Odin then shows ADDED in blue. As soon as I try to drag md5 file to AP box, it starts an ENTER CS for MD% check- as screenshot.
And that is where sod all happens. No way will AP box let me copy the tar file over. I have got to be doing something wrong.

When you check the box by AP, also click on the AP box to get it to open and be able to navigate to where you have the file and select it.
