Back up HTC desire system

vitalyki

Newbie
Having read numerous repeats of advice "Backup your system and data", I tried to learn how to do it but the only recipe for HTC Desire was Press HOME -> Menu -> Privacy etc while the menu on my phone (with Android 2.25) does not have this line with Privacy. Can anyone help me learn to backup the system, not just contacts, to CD? Thanks

Look in Menu/Settings/Privacy. This feature will backup data and settings related to your Google account to "the cloud" but imho is no substitute for a backup app like Titanium Backup or MyBackup Pro. Also don't overlook the fact that you can backup your external storage simply by mounting as a removable drive and copying the contents to PC.

You may have read a thread which was in the wrong forum. The system partition can.only be backed up by custom recovery once rooted

Like you, I'm still looking for something that will simply clone my entire phone, so that if, for instance, I lose the thing, I can "just" (!) buy a new one and restore my saved stuff to it.

But pending the discovery of such a cool app, my approach is to connect my phone to my PC via the USB cable and choose "Disk drive" from the various connection options.
When I do that, the SD card appears in Windows Explorer as a normal drive and I can copy everything to my PC's hard drive. Probably a good idea to set Explorer to also show hidden and system files, if it isn't already.

i typed back up no joy:confused: did privacy nothing whats the word that we need then

I have Android 2.2 and did the following:

  1. Go to "Menu, Settings, Search, Searchable items" and check the box next to "Settings"
  2. Exit to home screen and then press the Search hardware key (bottom right)
  3. Type "Privacy"
  4. Privacy is listed as "Privacy HTC global search"

Hope this helps :)

Great, I followed this advice. Now I do not find any button to start this backup. I tried to press the `Backup my settings' line and up came the question: Are you sure you want to stop backing up your settings and application data and erase all copies on Google server? I don't...
Looks like backing up worked all the time and I can factory reset and then restore from google. How? Has anyone done it?

I have the same problem. The current documentation on the HTC web site is inaccurate, referring to the "privacy" function. HTC support have confirmed...

"After the update to froyo 2.2 the back up function has been removed.
You can synchronise your contacts and calendar with HTC sync to your computer."

I want to back up (ideally to SD card) all the contents of the phone memory. I can't back up via a data cable (it's not working because of a faulty connector which is why the phone needs to be repaired). In any case I don't think I can back up the phone memory via a data cable

Can anyone recommend the best app for back up/ restore of the contents of the phone memory

Thanks

I have installed MyBackupPro 2.3.5 and was able to backup to SD or online (to the site of the developer), tested both (if connected by cable to computer, the phone should not be in disk drive mode, or MyBackup will not find the SD). The process shows the list of files it saves when saving data; when saving apps, it saves their .apk originals which are quite useful to have at your disposal anyway. This satisfied me at the moment - unless I decide to root the phone

The whole point is that the backup option is still present it is just hidden and accessed via the search method as described above.
