Help background data disable on wifi disconnection

hello, im new here and also new to android and i love it so far. there is one problem that im hoping to get fixed. i have to pay for each megabyte i use (it's not too expensive but it would still be nice to save). i would like to be able to disable background data (not the same a sync) when i disconnect from wifi and enable it when i connect to wifi automatically. i have tried wisync and unfortunately since i have a nexus s with 2.3.4 it didn't work. I dont see why this isn't an included feature. any help would be nice. thanks in advance

In the market is a wondrous little app called tasker that has the capability to do exactly what you are looking for and so much more. It costs money though, but it's worth every penny IMO

I used the trial for this app and although it did seem feature full, it doesnt have an option to enable or disable background data.

The only free way i know of doing it is to root your phone. I disable background data all the time with both CM7 and SuperAOSP.

im not entirely sure what rooting is or what the steps are afterwards to accomplish what i want to do. could you maybe explain a little more?

the rooting process doesn't seem that complicated but again im not sure what to do after i've rooted the phone so that background data is disabled depending on wifi status.
