Root Backing up Fascinate

I got a few questions before I start putting on roms/kernels. I already have CRM and rooted.

1) What is the difference between running Backup Current Rom in Rom Manager and / or Rebbot into Recovery and then backup from there?

Is it the same thing?


2) I already have Titanium Backup installed and did a complete backup of all apps and system. When I install a Custom Rom and kernel, unless something major goes wrong will I lose all my personal settings? For example my email accounts? My notification settings? Contacts? And if so I assume I can just do a restore from Titanium?

1 should be same but I always go to cwr to do it

2 yes you can restore as long as you back up both app and data... I recommend doing 3rd party back ups for texting messages and contacts etc.

I use sms backup and restore for text messages and for contacts I go to contacts to settings to more and export...

Got one more question - when I go to download say the Kernel, where do I put it on my zip card exactly? or it does not matter?

After I boot up using CRM, what options do I take exacty? There is one that apply from SD card if i recall, and another about update.zip



Also when do you have to wipe out your data? every time? I plan on just doing stupidfast kernel 1.2.3 for now

Anyway is fine as long as you can find it later. Myself I'd recommend creating a folder on your sdcard called kernels maybe and putting it in there. That way you will always know where to put and find you kernels.

In clockwork yes you want install from sdcard dont ever touch/use update.zip
 
It doesn't matter where you place the .zip file on your SD card.

What DOES MATTER is knowing exactly what you're flashing and having an escape route just in case something happens.

When you boot CWR, go to install zip from SDcard => files on SD Card => then search for your file

Update.zip is where clockworkmod lives. Leave this file alone. If you ever go to stock recovery (the blue screen), you can run update.zip, which will lead you to the CWR (green screen).

OK thanks I am finally understanding the process and just did Stupid Fast Kernel 1.2.3, worked without a hitch or I think..does not look different and I know it wont, so I assume it took and went.

My other question I want to install a de bing browser since I followed all the other steps in first thread, anyway I get stuck here not sure what to do

[Release] (8/11 fix) Browser (Removed VZW, Bing) - xda-developers

I downaloded it, and copied the apk to my card, but when i go browsing using astro, it will not allow me to copy the browser.apk to /system/app - thinking do not have rw acces, but then again I am suppose to be as root so confused

Anyway in the post said a lot easeir to do it via CRM

So I do something similar? boot into CRM and then install from zip and look for it?

Yeah if its zip it must be flashed in cwm, otherwise an apk itself can be put in system/app. But you will need RootExplorer or something like that for that RW access
 
Oh also if you grab setcpu [free if you are registered at xda] you can use the info tab to see what kernel you have. If the top line has the word geeknik in it you know you are running a stupidfast kernel

I want to thank everyone for help

I wad about to install via clockwork but it said. Are you sure. It cannot be undone and was nervous if something happens and need for froyo update

Out of curioisity do I need to change these settings on main screen
Right now default is conservate. I am not sure what world best with geeknik kernel also doesn't this custom kernel. Have UV and optimized already

conservative is best for battery life and good for everyday use...interactive might be better for gaming depending on the kernels....performance never seems to work as indicated so i avoid that

Thanks! BTW what is the hottest you seen your SF go?

Today while surfing web on the train it got as hot as 104 Fahrenheit, granted I was using the web for at least 45 minutes, so maybe that caused it.

I just was not sure if it was the stupidfast kernel did this possibly? As far as I understand stupidfast should be UV so it should use less cpu right?

To me it felt really warm where even touching the screen was warm borderline on getting very uncofartable.

Before installing the kernel the hottest I seen it get was 98 Fahrenheit.

Is there another kernel you recommend that can keep it cool while giving good battery life? I am not on DJ05 yet, maybe I should do that next and try stupidfast 1.54 instea

104 isn't a problem...,you wont notice slowdowns until it gets a lot hotter than that

I had another question, for that debing browser and install via CRM, I was about to install it and it said are you sure you want to do this it cannot be uninstalled.

Now my guess is there is a way to get it back if I want to right? Only through backing up the rom? or can i jsut backup the browser individually using titanium, before doing this?

I dont think I will go back, but I am not sure what will happen say when we need to upgrade to froyo

Dont worry about that "warning screen" its default you will always see that on any cwm flash. Also to address you question above I've seen 107 and even 109

Dolphin has a Mini version of their browser available in beta now that is supposed to be "lighter." I have also used Miren Browser and that one seems to be pretty light.

Even the free version is nice but be warned its the greatest battery drainer out there like 30% per hour or something fierce
