Ok so i messed up installing my first ROM. I defiantly learned my lesson so i plugged my phone into my computer and copied all the files off of my phone and put them in a new folder. Was that the right way to back it up and if i wanted to do a new ROM would i just do the same thing or copy something specific?

I assume you are referring to copying the files off of your sdcard. Each rom will put some files on your sdcard such as removed app, removed wallpaper, etc. Most of what is on your sdcard though is folders related to installed apps and media you download. Some of it will be zip files that you flash or backups you make but leaving it on the card is ok unless you need the room or like to keep it organized.
