Help Battery can't last 1/2 a day

Hi,

Within the last week or 2, my battery will not last 7 hours. Ironically, my son is having the same problem.

Is anyone experiencing this within the last week? My guess is that it's from one of my app updates, but I have no idea how to tell which one.

Thanks.
Denise

Download alogcat from the market, then launch it and sit the phone down (and don't touch it).
Watch the stuff on the screen for a couple minutes and note whatever commands repeatedly pop up. Then post them here and we can try to help.

Hi,

I downloaded and ran it, but i see too many numbers. What exactly am I looking for? Do you have a screenshot?

Thanks!

WEIRD! I've had the same problem too over the past 1-2 weeks, battery just getting burned up during the day, no idea what application it was (I actually deleted every new application I've installed over the past week or two and it's not any better as far as I can tell).

Very weird. I hope to get to the bottom of this. So frustrating.

Thanks also for the battery suggestion. i added to my wishlist :-)

I've had the phone since launch day and no problems till now.

I've had great battery life on my Evo lately...I'm not sure what's causing your drain but its likely some app.

Here's mine from a couple weeks ago when snapped a pic

Logcat is good for some things. Determining what is causing battery drain really isn't one of them, as it can be caused by too many things. How much do you use your phone? Does it drop a lot while you aren't using it? The best place to start is checking partial wake usage. Install spare parts from the market, plug the phone in for a minute, unplug it, let it sit for a few hours, then open spare parts, select battery history, select "partial wake usage" for the top dropdown, and make sure the second dropdown stays at "since last unplugged". What do you see at the top of the list?

I will try that tomorrow after I unplug. I hardly use the phone. In fact, the last week all I do is unplug, go to work, leave it in my purse and around 2p it's dead.

Yeah, the phone probably isn't sleeping, then. Go ahead and check with spare parts when you can, and let me know. That's the easiest place to start. There are other things we can check if that comes up with nothing unusual.

Sorry about that, I had some thing I needed to take care of last night.

I was just trying to figure out if there was something, maybe a rogue app, that was repeatedly trying to carry out some task. Maybe something similar to the 4G-checking battery drain problem. This seemed to be the most likely problem IMO because the battery drain just suddenly started.

@denise, I know there are lots of numbers, but all I need to know is whether or not you see something repeating over and over again... some kind of incremental pattern when the phone is sitting still.

So the batteries that were linked to above, are a pretty good deal for two batteries and a charger. I own those and they work great. You should get a couple extra hours out of them, and the charger is much more effective than charging through the phone's usb port. It takes longer, but its a better charge.

Now, I also own this battery, Amazon.com: HTC Evo 4G - 2200 mAh Premium Extended Battery with Back Door: Cell Phones & Accessories
I just bought it last week, and I'm going 18+ hours between charges. It has about 40% more capacity than the stock battery. It is larger than the other batteries, but it does come with a replacement back.

The only downer to the 2200mAh battery I linked to, is that your existing cases/covers won't fit. So it might be good to get in case you go on an extended outing where you won't be near a charger. Just food for thought.

Also, these 1800mAh batteries ship from htcexpress.com where you get them with free shipping and for about 5 dollars less.

Oh, I totally understand where you're coming from. It's just that doing that will only check for one thing, and can be very misleading unless you know exactly what you're looking for. Spare parts will show a better representation of what is going on, and will help determine if we should look at logcat later, rather than starting there. I do understand what you're getting at, though.

Ok, so after 2h 47m, Mail is on top, then Android. Not much showing though.. just a very thin line for each.

As of now, I'm 80% with 2:14 wake time.

On logcat, i see # 97 alot. 647 here and there.

Last night my phone died around 7pm. Unplugged at 7:45a. Better than dieing at 2p but still bad.

There are a few things you can do to make your battery last a little longer:

Keep 4g, wifi, and bluetooth off
Use the app Mobile Guard
Dim the brightness of the screen
Close apps you are not using
Make the screen time out shorter

Thanks Twilighter. Normally our batter is fine. Something happened within the last 2 weeks that is causing our battery to drain very quickly.

rooted phone with a 3500mAh battery installed.
Makes ALOT of difference in battery life. highly recommend!

Attched are two battery life screenshots.
One at about 9 hours unplugged and another at about 27 hours unplugged.
