Help Battery Draining Quickly

I really wish Facebook would update/code their app properly. There have been a couple recently but its always for function changes, not for bugs or making it more efficient.

I have to agree with you wholeheartedly on FaceBook. Ever was it thus with them. They behave as though their's is the only app that you need on your phone. Instead of coming up with new, revenue generating, features, it would be useful if they took a step back and offered some battery saving improvements.

lol ping pong, yea true, sorry i was being facetious :)

I thought you might be. A guy I know has one of the original Pong arcade games machines from the 1970's in his billiard room.

Quick note, been kinda hectic, and gotta run again in a few. Had gotten most of lollipop functional, (S5 verizon.), still had some off battery drains and sluggishness. Sat down a few days ago, sniffed thru Ironass's Dummies guide, and decided to try a cache clear (As per 1.3) Since then, my battery drain has, on average, about halved, or more. (run 16 hours or so, about 80% left, instead of 45-20%) Less warm phone discoveries. Better operation in general. So I'll say 'Thanks' to Ironass for his efforts and will keep an eye open. BTW, the phone batt app keeps reporting the wifi as always on, but MacroDroid is definitely shutting it down. Something else 5.0 broke.

And, of course, YMMV!!! But I've got a happier phone, that does everything I need it to do. BTW, it does seem as if, now, I get less batt drain on 5.0 as compared to 4.4 overall. Gotta run! Stu

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Mario Dimovski :)

One sure fire way to track down what is draining your battery is to follow the guide in post #202, above.

Wait, that's normal.

When your phone is fully charged, safety circuitry cuts off the charger and it runs on the battery until the factory preset is hit - often around 96% - and the process repeats. Laptops do this as well.

But - all the while that is going on, the phone usually shows charge at 100% - updating that during the full charge cycle is low priority.

When you take your phone off of the charger, it takes a few minutes for the status updates to stabilize and show the actual charge you really had when you unplugged it.

You didn't lose 3% in a few minutes - your phone wasn't at 100% when you unplugged it in the first place.

And the same thing happens at the bottom end.

Your phone will say it's out of power and shut down. To protect the battery from deep depletion (read - early battery death) it's not really dead - just dead enough.

It's like this on nearly every device using a lithium battery.

If it's your first time seeing it, unless this is your first smartphone, then this is just your first time seeing it.

It's not a big deal.

That's wtf ok.

The built-in tools to look at your battery are really weak, regardless of the phone brand. I've never been able to tell normal from abnormal with them.

Best bet, follow @ironass advice and check out "GSam Battery Monitor"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm

Here's the kind of graph that really informs, note - Other selected, and landscape to see more detail (the new version, Other is a tab along the top -

1426441864206.jpg

This screen next because it spells out how much time is talking or screen on -

1426442013245.jpg

Start there.

Use the Hoover at the bottom to see what's sucks power, bar at top of next page shows a drop down for choices.

How long does your battery last?

How much of that is screen on time?

Those are the two simple measures that you care about.

Just posting something I observed that was draining my S5 battery after lollipop update and wonder if anyone else is having the same issue. I would connect to the wifi at AC speeds both at work and home and noticed significant battery drainage - I would be at 95% after my commute to work, and noticed I would go to 40-30% by the end of the day (leaving work after 9 hours), and this was without heavy usage of the phone. Unfortunately I can only connect at AC speeds to our wifi in work, it automatically connects at the highest speed available even though G or N speeds are available and there is no way I can see to force the phone to connect at slower speeds for Wifi. At home I noticed the same thing. I have an AC/G/N router running two AP's.. one for AC speed devices only, and one for G and N speeds. I tested at home with AC and same results, significant battery drain. I switched to the G/N AP and noticed that my battery life returned to something more acceptable. I turned off my Wifi in work also with the same results. I am usually at 75-80% by the time I leave work and 50-60% by the end of the night.

Just to be safe I did a full reset on my phone after the lollipop update and it did not make a difference.

Anyone else notice this?

There are bugs with wifi in the 1st release of Lollipop 5.0, google addressed them in 5.0.1. Which ROM are you on? I had an upate last week to the OB7 ROM and its put the battery life back to how it was under Kitkat, maybe a bit better :) I also did a factory reset which didn't help initially.

I thought that I had sorted battery drain issues out and I was pretty happy with getting a day and a half on average on a charge. Today I randomly decided to switch off wifi at work. I started the day with 92% charge and came home with 88% which was quite a surprise. I have turned on wifi at home tonight and will use it as I normally do but will continue turning off wifi each day at work until I have to recharge. I'll post back when my experiment has finished.

So I have managed 2 days 19 hours on one charge by turning off wifi at work. I also turned it off at night when I went to bed but used it as normal for the rest of the time. While I doubt I could do this all the time it does show how much power the wifi radio uses.

Hi Xk56gu!

From your screenshot, your Wi-Fi appears to have been connected the whole time.

It also looks as though you are on the KitKat, Android 4.*.* firmware. It would help if you gave your full, "Version", details as per #1.8 of 40 Galaxy S5 models - Dummies Guide.

I see you have two login names... but that aside, if you will install MacroDroid to control the WiFi and Data radios for you behind the scenes, you can really experience some greatly extended battery life.

We have two S5 phones here, mine gives me 2 or 3 days of fairly normal use. both have Qi wireless chargers so a recharge is just a matter of remembering to lay it on the charger when needed.

The wife's S5 however, in her mind, is just a telephone and it lays around forever until someone calls her. That phone goes for a week or two between charges. I will put up a screen shot of her battery at 8 days and approx 50% battery life left... EDIT: I posted two thumbnails, one at 37% and the other at 47%, she must have had a "heavy conversation" on the first one

Yeh, I noticed the solid blue line but can't explain it. I switched wifi off from the quick settings panel in notifications. I know it was off because I have some Tasker profiles that use wifi and they stopped. My model is a G900I on 4.4.2 in Australia. I have rooted it as well but it is on stock firmware.

Thanks AZgl1500, I have looked at MacroDroid but I am using Tasker that uses wifi and Bluetooth for triggering actions.

(I don't know how I was able to login in with only part of my username. Do I actually have 2 usernames now?)

Me again. Ironass, I've had that bogus settings program wifi readout since first Lollipop upgrade. (Verizon, just got the C4 upgrade G900VVRU1BOC4 an hour ago. Still gets the wifi wrong...) I also suspect that it messes with my system upgrades, since the last couple of Pushes have gone thru the phone data radio, instead of the wifi, chewing up my data usage big-time. Last time Verizon claimed my wifi must have been down, even after I explained that my picocell site is connected to the same device. No wi-fi, no cell. Too stupid to understand, I guess. This time, I'll get them to credit me that usage, since Lollipop seems to use much more data radio than Kitkat did, even with most everything turned off, and even when it's near wi-fi almost constantly. Likely background traffic, as Macrodroid shuts down wifi when screen off. And data radio, supposedly.

Gsam, BTW, gets it right on the wifi. Macrodroid turns it off when screen off, Gsam (and battery usage!) reflect that accurately. Stock settings app is still confused about it, and my internal storage. (Accding to it, my 16G flash has 12.01G apps, 1.14G cached data (Time to flush!), 5.75G misc, and 4.44G free. I may not be Einstein, but that math don't hunt! Again, that's been screwy since the last 4.4 update.

Just odd bits from this phone. (.35GB on that C4 update, BTW.) Quick impressions. Faster operation, opens apps and task window faster. Ran hot as blazes during the upgrade/app updates. Cooled off rapidly, and looking at Gsam's hour or so of data, the battery usage has dropped quite a bit from first 5 version, even after tweaking and so on.

I've used quite a bit of screen time, checking things out, even that runs less. Gsam's running current drain was pretty much at 600ma when looking at it on first version, now is saying 450ma. Don't know how accurate that calc is, but looking at the slope on the batt usage, it's a lot closer to 'flatline' when the screen's off than it used to be, so I think it's likely to be significantly improved. Will watch like a hawk, next few days.

Too soon to say it's all good, but seems better at first glance. As I'm in a poor/none signal area, when I leave home, and it loses the picocell, you can see more power used as it 'hunts' for signal 'til I get closer to town. So i'll keep watching, and see how it goes.

Take care, stay android! (Tho these $20 windows 8 nokia 521 phone Target was selling ain't bad. Using one without sim card as a wifi music box/media phone. 64G sd card means you don't need much outside data...)

yours, Stu

Check wifi advanced settings if allow scanning for networks is checked. That's why stock battery app shows solid line for wifi even though it's off.

Ah! Yes thanks talex416. I thought I turned that off months ago but just checked it again and it was on, so of course I have now turned it off.

I have a huge question. Is there any posibility that a motherboard mallfunction to cause the battery drainage? I have a brand new phone bought from amazon and i'm using it in Romania. The battery life is horrible , somewhere between 6-8 hours. Despite the battery everything works great. A service here in Romania checked the phone and told me that the motherboard is the problem.( I did the factory reset twice and update from kitkat to lollipop)
Thank you
