Root Battery life after installing Mikg 2.57 is horrible! Any ideas?

I just rooted my phone a couple of days ago for the first time after watching several videos on youtube. The current rom that im using is Mikg 2.57 with the stock kerrnel. My battery life sucks. Before lunch, it was at 100%. After 6 phone calls and surfinging the web all in a 30 minute break, it when down to about 55%. The only thing syncing is gmail. Im new too all this rooting stuff so take it easy on my guys. Do I have to recalubrate the battery? I wouldn't mind flashing a kernel but wouldn't know which one and etc... Thanks you guys for the patience with us noobs.
 
Yeah a kernel would probably help, but check for wake locks first and foremost. Any time you change the kernel you need to give it a couple days to settle in before you'll notice a difference.
 
Wake locks are things that prevent the phone from entering sleep mode I believe.

I was always given this advice in regards to battery life, if you don't need it / aren't using it, turn it off. That goes for all things, radios (4g, 3g, wifi, bluetooth) and set screen times lower. Control brightness manually. Setting the sync modes to manual is also a way to help battery life.

SetCPU will lower you cpu speeds - which could help, also called underclocking.

I'm sure there are more, but I've got to sneeze so...

I am glad you posted this, I just rooted last friday and I am went with MikG 2.57 and I am having the same battery problem.
I also added the Freedom kernal on top of that and nothing has changed.

Does anyone else have this problem and is 2.56 more stable?

So I've run the stock kernel with all the MikG versions (including the latest 2.56 and 2.57), and usually get over a day out of the battery with moderate to moderate-heavy use. (it's one of the reasons I always come back to it).

So, things I do:

(1) As someone said above, check for wakelocks, apps always running/keeping your phone awake.

(2) Make sure you're on the latest radios (folks have complained about some radio versions, but I've been having good luck with the latest). Find them on this thread ... and if you decide to flash them, BE SURE to NOT take out your battery while they're flashing. (This is one of the few ways to brick your phone).

(3) Run "Battery Calibration" after flashing a new ROM. It does make a difference, especially if you're going between AOSP and Sense ROMs.

(4) Make sure you've updated your profile and PRI after a new [Sense] ROM flash.

And one of the major things with ROMs and Kernels, give them a day or two to settle in! (and make sure when you flashed you wiped completely, and gave sense roms the time they need to settle!)
 
I'm new to rooting as well.. and used mikg 2.56 and i've had pretty much same battery life as stock configuration, however it's only been 2 days.

Just go to settings --> system updates --> Update profile and then Update PRL

And everything I said just come from advice I've gotten from the great folk here and over at themikmik. I'm sure the folks who are much more experienced than I will let you know if I missed anything. :)
 
just an fyi guys. roms in general do not really have to do much with battery life. it does factor in, but there are many other factors to consider. i think that the one thing that really helps is a custom kernel and using setcpu.

there are only three(well four if you count poonsense if you get it from kernel manager) golden monkey, freedom, and chop suey. best thing to do is make a nandroid backup and try them out. give it a few days for it to settle before deciding to move on.

ocnbrze sent me a pm earlier with some kernels we should try. He said to try Aggressive Freedom. I've had trouble downloading the kernel from my phone but now I am finally at my computer trying to download it. Try some of the kernels for our ROM.

We also have the option of Golden Monkey and Chop Suey as well as the versions of Freedom. Read up on what's known as SBC. It is very risky but if you get a good one, you will get some great battery life. When I say risky, I mean that there have been reports of some people's batteries being destroyed from using it so be cautious. My last SBC kernel was Tiamat which cannot be used for MikG but it was a great battery saving kernel. And as ocnbrze told me, make sure to back up in recovery before flashing the kernel.

i actually have not seen any reports of a phone exploding because an sbc kernel. sbc kernels are great. i get the best battery life on them i just wish that there were some sbc gingerbread sense kernels. right now all we have is aosp kernels that have it.

i suggest the freedom-aggressive kernel. i flashed lastnight with mikg2.57 and aggressive-freedom and im running great.. battery life is better than what it was with mikg2.45/golden monkey. pretty happy with it.
 
Just to add my $.02.

If you decide to flash a custom kernel, I would recommend using the interactiveX governor with NO screen on/screen off profiles. I've gotten the best performance and battery life with this;)

When I was about to flash Tiamat, I had a question concerning SBC as there were two different ones. One had the SBC after it and the other didn't. I thought you were the one who told me but it may have been someone else lol but anyway I did a quick Google search on SBC kernels at the time (late 2011 Summer) and came up with a couple of different websites where people were saying that SBC kernels had destroyed their batteries. I can't remember for sure, but either the batteries wouldn't hold a charge anymore or couldn't be charged or were completely fried. Someone on here told me to be cautious but I told them that I had two batteries so I'd be fine in any case.

Well thanks for that anyway! I'm hoping that I just imagined that conversation haha I'd hate to fry one of these batteries. Thanks for the clarification ocnbrze! I had excellent battery life with the SBC kernel to say the least. SBC does a great job of keeping that charge in after you take it out of the plug.

Usually you will notice that within 30 seconds of removing your phone from the charger, your battery may ALREADY be at 98% battery left. SBC kernels, as I am told, keep that charge and the last kernel did a fine job of keeping the charge throughout the day even with heavy usage on high settings such as high brightness.

Not to be nitpicky, but for educational sake...

Normal kernals will charge your battery up to 100% (when the light turns green), but lithium ion batteries hate to be at 100% so the manufactures made it so that after your battery reaches 100%, it stops charging and drains until it reaches 90%, at which point it starts charging again. Therefore, while charging overnight your battery level is constantly bouncing between 90 & 100%. When you take your phone off the charger it will still read 100%, but it could actually be anywhere in that range. The quick drop off you see is the displayed % catching up to where the phone actually is.

SBC kernels charge the battery very slowly and keep it at 100%, so when you take it off the charger you are actually at 100% and there is no dropoff as the displayed battery % catches up to actual %



So its not that the phone is holding charge longer, its that is it actually charged more (anywhere between 0-10% depending on when you take it off).

That makes more sense! Thanks for the clear explanation. I thought it just managed battery power much better than others. But that makes sense.
 
Also, as far as remaining on topic of the thread....

I achieved AMAZING battery life with this today.

I was showing 13 hours on battery during normal use (GPS, WIFI radios on, bad signal in basement classrooms) and was still showing 75% battery life. I ran a battery calibration yesterday.

Current setup:

MikG2.57
Aggressive Freedom Kernel
Stock battery
Old superuser
V6 supercharger
Newest radio
PRI 1.77
PRL version 60681
SetCPU set to 1113max 125 Min with screen off profile set to 422 max and in call profile set to 729 max.

I wish I could have rode it out and see where it ended up, but the girlfriend played a lot of angry birds and now the battery is at 51% at 16 hours :(

If we extrapolate the 75% at 13 hours though thats 52 hours at 0%
 
lol well either way, the phone will basically cease to be supported by Sprint after October 2011 is up.

Where do you get that from?

Sprint is still selling EVO's, so I would assume they would have to support them for the full 2 year contract.

well you have to define supported. yes we might get some small updates but i doubt we will get anything big like ICS. tech support might be slightly different. i have insurance and i dropped my evo and my charge port separated and i was able to get a refurb. but now my refurb has a loose charge port and sprint now says that i have to go through asurion and pay $100 bucks to get a replacement. so i'm not sure how much tech support we will be getting from now on. especially since they are not getting made anymore.
 
HMM, I've got about 2 months before my best buy "future proof" (basically) free upgrade runs out.

Yeaaaaaaaa...I accidentally mixed two threads together lol but yeah, the Evo 4G will be at its EOL when November 2011 comes.

What it definitely means is that HTC will not be making them anymore. They may have stopped production a few months/weeks ago, but still, we can say for sure that this is the end of the line for it from HTC factories.

As far as Sprint, ocnbrze is right. It depends on many different things. As we have seen, some people still use their HTC Hero's and Sprint still allows them on the network so the support isn't really gone...if you have troubles too, I think HTC will still help. As far as a warranty, they may just get you a brand new phone that won't be it after a while. They still sell the Evo but you can bet that these are Evos that are the last to come off the line or refurbishes they are trying to get rid of. If you call Sprint for technical help, I'm sure they'll still help too.

Our local rooting devs may stick around for a bit longer too. Most have already moved on to other devices like the Evo 3D which is part of the reason why it took so long for a root for 2.3.3. Support for our Evos will still be around here on the net from other users of course. I'm sure some ROMs will still be updated as time goes on too. When Ice Cream Sandwich comes out (Android 2.4), we will probably see it in ROM form but I can almost guarantee you that we will not see an official update coming through from Sprint or HTC unless we search high and low on Sprint's website and find a manual link for it.
