Battery life - post update - strange but true

Before OTA update, my battery lasted 12-15 hours
OTA Update bricked my phone, so I had to ODIN it
After ODINing, my battery lasts 20-22 hours with typical use.

I have no idea how that happened.

Interesting, so here's another one with better battery usage post update. Sounds similar to my experience.

Did mine over OTA

Battery seems to be about the same. Initually i thought it was a little worse but its about the same. I got a little over 23 hours the other day but 6 of that was it just sittng on my nightstand while i was sleeping. I usually turn it off when charging but forgot and it had 10% left.

You'd have to ask whoever is making that assumption.

How many Vibrants have been updated? Hundreds of thousands at least? How many are complaining on the various forums? What percentage does that represent of all the updated phones? If the update alone is the culprit why aren't all the updated phones showing the problem? It could be some combination of settings, usage, update, HW, apps, mods or who knows what. Without a lot more information it's impossible to reach firm conclusions.

And exactly why I hoped this thread would generate some discussion that would generate light on the subject as opposed to heat.

You are the one that said there isn't a problem.I didnt mod anything it was 100 stock. Did you ask this over at T-Mobile support forum or even look
You made the initial blanket statement so you back up what you said

The attitude your post conveys is an example of generating heat rather than light. Why the chip on the shoulder? Can we work together? We are a community, let's try to sort this out without the adversarial tone.

I don't have an attitude, for the most part I sit and read watch how people proclaim that because it isn't happening to them than it most be something other party is doing. It happened in the GPS related threads and it's repeating itself in the Battery life issues.
Go over and read T-mobile own support threads about batteries. Many of those people are not running any custom roms or lagfixes they are just everyday normal people looking for help.

I said the update itself isn't the problem, because I believe lots of phones have the update and no problem. I don't doubt that people reporting high battery drain are indeed seeing what they report. It's possible that the update in combination with something else causes a problem. What that something else might be is the question. If you find the answer please let us know.

The issue has to be the update is saying it's complete and it's actually is not. My display drivers didn't install properly and was causing my screen to run through my battery because it couldn't do black anymore it was doing grey.
I went back using Odin and now my blacks are blacks and not light grey and dark grey.
I think I am just going to avoid the entire J16 until froyo arrives.

What I'm saying is that rather than being confrontive and accusatory, let's try to work together to figure this out. Rather than focusing on "people blaming other people" let's focus on the issue at hand.

It sounds like Odin is working for you. That's a plus. Did you use the .tar + .pit files or just the .tar with Odin?

just the file with the tar extension. Like I said I read many threads at many different forum about the issue to see the spike in complaints rise after the update. I even did the factory reset before this thread was even made.
I rooted and ran so many customs roms on my G1 and mytouch that I decided that I don't want to spend the time doing it again with this phone and WOW here I am doing it again.

According to your previous posts in this forum you had rooted your Vibrant, installed and uninstalled NoLED, and a 3rd party launcher due to battery drain problems. Is that what you consider 100% stock?

To be clear, I'm not picking on you. I've hacked nearly every electronic device I own including my TV and my camera. I have refrained for now with this phone for exactly the reasons we've seen with update issues. There can certainly be good reasons for customizing gizmos but as you acknowledge there's also often a price.

These devices are so complex it can be very difficult to troubleshoot problems. All the varieties of customization folks get into makes it that much more difficult. But that openness is also one of the appeals of Android.

I have an interesting thought. Pre-update, if I left my phone on the charger and looked at the battery usage even at 100%, it said the phones state was "On charger" or something similar. Now, post-update, once the battery reaches 100%, it seems to come off charge. My battery usage says it's been off the charger for 3m 13s (or whatever), despite still being plugged in. I know that li-ion batteries have a memory, and if it's not drained more completely before you put it on the charger, it can shorten the life of the battery.

Could the constant cycling between being on charge and not despite still being plugged in cause the battery to run a shorter cycle? I typically charge my phone at night while I'm sleeping, but last night noticed a battery drop from 37% at 1am (when I went to bed) to 12% at 9AM (when I woke up). No other settings have been changed since the update, and I would lose maybe 8% while I slept pre-update.

I hope I explained that alright.

an update: I just unplugged it from the charger and my battery life immediately dropped to 95%. yeah, I just wrote the previous post 3 minutes ago.

jree, here are the detailed instructions and links to the files to go back to "preupdate." xda-developers - View Single Post - Offical JI6 update - INFO thread

After you go back to JFD (preupdate) and do some testing, then I would recommend you try the 2 file Odin update (uses both .tar and .pit files). I've had great luck with that update with both battery, market, etc.

Let us know how the JFD affects your battery life. ;)

Hey Robo... The link in the XDA post is no longer active.

Is there any other place to download this??

I haven't read every response in this thread. However, I patiently waited for the official OTA JI6 update, and now that I have it my battery life has actually dramatically improved. Prior to the update, my phone would die overnight with no use, just while I was asleep the battery would be used up. Now, after the update, I wake up and my battery indicator is almost the same as when I went to sleep.

I use *#*#4636*#*# to verify my battery level, temp and time since last boot, and sure enough I'm getting greater battery life, especially during idle.

Maybe applying JI6 without waiting for the official OTA is the reason you guys are having problems? Could it possibly be that you guys didn't get a full, complete proper JI6? I don't know, just throwing out an idea.

how do you do a reset on the vibrant? i'm getting about 10 hours now after the update.. i was getting twice the battery life before.

1.
From Idle mode, touch Applications ➔ Settings ➔ Privacy.

2.
Touch Factory data reset.
This action erases all data from your phone except current
system software and bundled applications, or SD card files
such as music or photos.

3. Touch Reset phone.

Yup, I think it wasn't the complete update.

Okay this is what I did I used ODIN and went back from the update. I noticed my battery life returned. So late last night while Brock was getting beat I used Mini Kies to do the update.
Now my battery is now around 9hrs not the 12 I use to have but a hell of a lot better than the 3hrs.

No, that isn't it. That wouldn't explain my excellent battery life after Odin JI6 and the guy whose display got messed up with an incomplete OTA. My Odin update was official.

i did official OTA.. and i'm only getting 11-12 hours of mild use. before that, i got up to about 30 hours with very light usage. normally though, it would last me about 24 hours.

btw, thanks robo1.. i have no idea why it would be under privacy. looked for the option in other places but couldn't find it. just reset the phone now, i'll have to see how things go.

I had a crazy weekend so I couldn't monitor that closely, but I'm getting better battery life since the reset for sure. However, I'm still down to 20% be early evening. Much better than 1PM though. I wouldn't call myself a heavy user at all. How someone can fo an entier day and only be down to 80% is MIND BOTTLING! ;)

I charged some while doing work in the evening last night so I didn't put it on charge when I went to bed. I woke up to a "please charge your phone" message. This was overnight. No use at all. Even if I was at 50%, that doesn't seem right.

I did the update via Mini Kies.

Did a factory reset this weekend and my battery life has dramatically improved as well as my gmail app and others are now working like they should.

You're welcome and good luck, keep us posted. You do have options to try to correct this if the reset doesn't do the trick.

(after update & factory restore) i'm pretty impressed, my phone has been unplugged for 39-1/2 hours now and i'm at 15% still. And yes, I have used my phone. not heavy, just normal use. I've used it to browse the internet, phone calls and sent text msg's. i'd consider it pretty avg use.

Considering that you have a mobile device with a 1Ghz CPU and a potent GPU and a brilliant display with only a 1500 MAH battery this qualifies as excellent IMO. Expecting more than this with all the bells and whistles we have is just unrealistic.

robo21, I can always count on a helpfull post from you!!! Thanks

If I were you I'd really consider taking the phone to T-Mo and see if you can get a warranty exchange. You shouldn't have to sacrifice working GPS for decent battery life!

I want to do a warranty exchange but I don't want a refurb. I wouldn't be sacraficing anything if I reverted back b/c my GPS hasn't gotten any better or worse. Its exactly the same as it was pre-update. It is off by just as big a margin when I'm indoors and it occasionally jumps around the screen when I'm outdoors. The navigation still occasionally loses the route that I am on. I love this phone so all this is frustrating but I have learned to live with all its quirks. Its Samsung that I am growing increasingly frustrated with
