Battery life - post update - strange but true

Have the folks with battery life problems tried recalibration?

Recalibrating Your Battery... - xda-developers

Just a thought.

I did this on Saturday. I unplugged my phone at 8 am, and by 10 am I was down to an indicated 70%. It had almost no usage on it, no calls, checking email every 30 minutes, 2g/3g, no wifi, no GPS, and the screen at 10% brightness. I followed the calibration steps, with the exception of being able to remove the batterystats.bin file. I assume I could not do that because my phone is not rooted. Last night, after using the GPS and WiFi for a couple of hours, I went to bed with the battery at about 60%. Today, I again took the phone off the charger at 8 am. I had one 30-minute phone call, a couple of text messages, and used Evernote for about 20 minutes. The rest of the time the phone was just sitting idle. As I go to bed, about 9:30 pm, the phone is at 79% indicated. So, if this holds, it looks like this has been a huge help. Thank you very much.

I guess I am in need of a factory reset as well. I have tried all that I can find to conserve battery life on this Vibrant but the results are minimal at best using SetCPU, Process Manager and Battery Manager.
I start my day at 3:30 am with full charge. By 4:30 I'm at 96% with no use at all. After about 45 minutes of on screen time including emails, tweets and 15 minutes of angry birds, I'm looking at 40% by 8:30 am. With only half my work day done I'm already reaching for the charger. I've never had a device that killed a battery this bad. Rooted/Stock with J16 update.

Castle, this sounds exactly like my situation; exactly. Factory Reset definitly helped me. Do it; you have nothing to lose but a few minutes of time and then a few more reinstalling apps. Astro was handy for backup and reinstallation. I've yet to reinstall half of the apps I had on there before though. Don't know if that made a difference or not, but I'm getting much better battery life now. Just started this recalibration tip now as well.

Thought I would chime in on this as well. I have never had any serious battery issues, then I read this thread and decided to do a little test and see how well my battery was performing.

The phone is 1 month old running the JI6 update and launcher pro with desktop visualizer.

I changed some settings around to see how much I could squeeze out the battery in one single charge.

Screen Brightness: Automatic
3G: On
WiFi: Turned off unless I needed it
GPS: Turned off unless I needed it
Haptic Feedback: Off
Power Saving Mode: On
Wallpaper: Still 3D picture with a gray-scale color combo

I plugged the phone in this past saturday morning and charged it to 99% (I never got the fully charged tone as I had to unplug it and leave. I unplugged it at roughly 10:00am. I used it all day, texing, a phone call or two, and checking it periodically for any notifications. At the end of the day the battery was still looking good. At 12:00 (14 hours later) the battery showed 75%

I left it on all night without charging it at all, and the battery said 73% at 9:00am on Sunday. Again, I used the phone all day, texting a lot, one phone call, and some web browsing. Since the usage on Sunday was slightly heavier the battery drained a little bit faster than it did saturday. At 7pm I my batter life was 50%, and at 2:00am when I finally went to bed the battery was at 39%.

This morning at 9:45am when I woke up the battery was at 35%. Right now it is 11:30 and the battery is at 34%.

I am going to run it until it dies and calculate the total number of hours that I got out of this charge (which wasnt even a "full" charge).

To make it easier, here is a timeline.

Saturday 10:00am - 99% (Unplugged from charger)
Sunday 12:00am - 75%
Sunday 9:00am - 73%
Sunday 7:00pm - 50%
Monday 2:00am - 39%
Monday 9:45am - 35%
Monday 11:30am - 34% (Current)

Total usage so far: 49.5 hours

Reminder: This was normal usage. Steady flow of text messages during the day, no usage at night, GPS and WiFi used a couple times each day and then turned off again. I even used the calculator for about 2 hours on Sunday night to do my economics homework. I have not charged the phone since the initial charge on saturday morning.

I got my phone on the first day.. Maybe the first ones out are having problems?

I did install juicedefender and last night I charged to 100% power cycled it and this morning after 10.5 hours it was at 96%.. so I went from a 54% drain with no use to only 6%.

I have not noticed any improvement on the battery life during the day though. After 4 hours of moderate use I am at 67%.

Any hope that samsung will acknowledge the problem and come up with a solution or should we all just keep our fingers crossed that 2.2 will resolve the battery issues?

This is unbelievable.

I fully charge mine every night before I go to bed, when I wake up in the morning it's usually at like 15-25%. If I don't charge it in the morning, I'll be fully dead by 11am.

The other day I put it in flight mode over night to see what would happen. I woke up to a battery at 5%.

I tried the juice defender app, that thing completely killed my battery over night and made my phone lag big time.

I think that most battery "saving" apps end up using more battery than they save.

update on my little experiment. Phone is still on the charge from saturday morning. I used it all day yesterday with a lot of texting again, a couple phone calls, and a little bit of web browsing.

Battery life this morning at 9:45 (current) is 5%.

Total uptime on single charge 73 hours, 54 minutes, and 33 seconds.

first, i totally agree that task killers are useless on android and most likely a battery drain.

however. the people claiming juicedefender doesn't work or drains their battery aren't using it right. jd is a complete battery saver for me. without it my battery drains super quick.

where it saves me and pretty much my only use for it is regulating my data connections. my battery will last 30-40+ hours easy with normal use with jd running. without it, my battery drains at a horrible rate. i'm pretty sure this is from the radio update as when my data connections are unregulated my battery drains the worst. battery drain problems when my data connections are being regulated by jd is non existent.

you guys need to check your jd settings. i should add that i have the paid version.

the way i have mine set up:

timeout: do nothing
schedule: enable data/wifi for 2m every 30m
night: do nothing
battery: keep data/wifi disabled while below 5%
traffic: leave data/wifi enabled while >50kb/15s
peak: do nothing
apps: do nothing
screen: leave data/wifi enabled while screen unlocked
location: keep wifi disabled while distance >50m

Well I reinstalled Juice Defender last night just for the heck of it. Unplugged my battery at 100% like I always do, and to my surprise, I woke up to a battery at 61%. That's a huge improvement over the 80% drop I had been getting overnight. I just used the default settings, I didn't mess around with anything. It says that it has increased my battery life x1.75. I'll leave it on to see how it goes.

I want to chime in on this thread too since i've been having battery issues. I intend to do a recalibrate, and a factory reset to see how things go.

So far...(am using JuicePlotter to report my data)
5.30 am, charged my phone = 100%
5.30am to 7am, alarm rang, otherwise on idle = 85% (that's a 15% drop in 1.5hours!)
7am - 8am, idle, 72% (13% drop in 1 hour)
8am - 9am, used Timecatcher app (stopwatch) for an hour, checked noLed notifications 2ce, made one phone call - battery at 64% (8% drop)
9am - 11am, wifi on, no other use 41% (23% drop in 2 hours)

So, i've dropped about 60% in just under 6 hours, with not much use!

I have these apps running all the time:
1) Juice Defender (default settings)
2) WidgetLocker
3) K9 Mail
4) Tasker
5) Background sync

The batter info shows:
Since last unplugged, 6hrs
Display 64% (even though i have sent it to brightness 0 in my settings)
Cell Standby 9%
Voice calls 8%
Android System 5%
Phone idle 5%
Android OS 3%
Juiceplotter 2%
K9 Mail 2%

Any thoughts/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Also, before the OTA update, i was able to change my network settings from 3g to 2g, but now I can't find how to do that...

I'll repost after battery calibration!

set your settings up on jd like mine because dropping 39% over night is still pretty bad. mine maybe drops 5% or less.

Go to Settings>Wireless and network>Mobile networks>Network Mode. G2 is now refered to as GSM.

I did a factory reset and now toggle between 2G and 3G and have seen a dramatic increase in battery life!

Hey,

I just downloaded juicedefender ultimate (installed the free one first etc), and whenever it tries to install the AOSP helper, I just get an error. It finishes the installation, but without the AOSP helper, any idea why this is happeneing?

I'm running fusion 1.1 with voodoo

Ok, thanks. That's what i was already on. So is WCDMA 3g then?

I havent tried reset yet. I tried to calibrate according to the post above, but couldn't run the terminal emulator. As in, i could run it, but the su command didn't work. I'm wondering if you have to be rooted to do that battery calibration?

I guess factory reset is next....

After doing this on Saturday, I do seem to have better battery life. Yesterday I let the phone run all the way down and turn itself off. That took just under 23 hours. I let it charge fully this morning, the first 10% went down pretty quickly, like an hour, with no usage. Now, about 8 hours later, I have 60% left. I had a couple of hours of phone calls, a few emails, and a few text messages. Better than before I attempted the calibration. (I was not able to remove the batterystats.whatever file, I am guessing that it is because I am not rooted.)

OK, latest update. Last night I installed JuiceDefender and spent some time setting it up. Originally the thing sucked battery life like crazy. I turned it off and then started turning on functions, watching the battery life. I can't remember which default function seemed to take away the battery life, but now I think I have something that doesn't hurt the battery life at least. I should have waited before trying this to give myself a heavy usage day before installing juicedefender. Oh well, shoulda, woulda, coulda.

Today's usage:
Phone calls: 4 hours
K9 emails: 24 (or so)
Gmails: 5
Text messages (total): 24 (or so)

With the phone off the charger now for 11.5 hours, I have 35% indicated battery life left.

Thanks for the tips, I really think that this has helped improve battery life dramatically.

Ok, I finally got GREAT battery life out of my phone, and I mean GREAT.I ended up just doing a factory reset on my phone. I was reluctant to do it, but I had try something drastic. I was getting maybe 8 hours on a full charge, unacceptable. After I did the reset, I gave Juice Defender another shot. I used the same settings that rocketragz recommended. The only thing I changed was Night: Keep data/wi-fi disabled 2am-9:30 am. I went to bed last night with a full charge, and to my surprise I woke up with 94% left on my battery! Right this second, I'm at 18hrs 39m since I last charged it, and my battery has 64% left. I also downloaded an app/widget called "battery left". It's just like a normal battery widget, only thing thing also tells you how much battery you have left, according to the widget I have 29 hours left on this charge.

I am still not happy with my battery life. I get 12-15 hours with light use before I start getting warnings.

these are the things I have tried..
Juice defender - my set up is as above.. it did help with overnight drain but that is all.
Deleted my yahoo mail account
Set up everything in settings to reserve battery (sync options gps and screen brightness)
Turned off 3g.

Still no good.. Just turned 3g back on since it made no real difference.

I have noticed that not nearly as many people are complaining about this problem as before.. Even on tmobile forum.. did they stumble across some fix and move on, or have they given up and are just waiting to see if froyo fixes it?

Juice Defender is the bomb. Before JD I was getting about 8-10 hours on a full charge. This is what I'm looking at right now with about 20% left. Yeah buddy!

So yesterday after a day of heavy use, I put my phone on the at 2:30pm.. When I left work at 5 I was at 95%.. Then several hours later I looked at it and it was still at 94..then after a little use I noticed it was going down faster.. Left it off charger over night and it went from 84 to 44 with juice defender running

my experience is weird.. i was getting really bad battery drain so i replaced the battery with the cheap OEM one i got from ebay. it's been about 32 hours of very light use and my phone has gone down 50%.. at this rate, it will last me at least 50 hours.

seems like every time i switch the battery (when the drain is bad).. things get better.

I love this phone, but the battery life is unacceptable. I don't know how other smart phones are but this is just ridiculous. I don't use my phone a lot throughout the day, but If I were I would never keep it. My phone lasts about 10-12 hrs after I unplug it at 100%.

I also can never leave on throughout the night because it will kill 60-70 percent of the battery. If I leave it on flight mode though it might drop 1% that's it. There should be a better solution to this than us having to do resets, dl apps etc.

Also, how do you toggle between 2g/3g?
