Battery Life - The Good The Bad and The Ugly

Does your phone drop 10% quickly in the morning after a full night of charging?

... engadget did wifi hotspot to several devices for 3 hours at 50% battery idk about you but 4g and wifi both cranking for 3 hours is pritty darn good
 
I'm reading reviews that are saying the battery life is poor because of 4g + 3g/4g toggle - along with the bigger screen.

It's also not as zippy/fast as recent HTC phones.

But if you don't use 4g and don't mind spending the $10 for it, then I'm sure the battery life wouldn't be as bad.

Here's another thing of note.

I'm beginning to suspect that battery usage is not reported linearly. The last two evenings, I've made sure to drain my battery COMPLETELY, so I can do a full and complete charge. Killing the last 20%, surfing, speedtesting, etc., takes the better part of an hour.

Food for thought.
 
I agree with most here. My Touch Pro can barely get through a full day for me, and that's with moderate usage. In the USA Today review, the author essentially puts "Horrible battery life!!!" in the title, and then yet in the first paragraph, he admits that his iPhone 3GS has nearly the same battery life. I'm glad he at least admitted that, but it doesn't make much sense to use it as a knock against the Evo, but not against the iPhone (to be fair, I've never read an iPhone 3GS review from this author, if he did one).

Personally I'm hoping to be able to get a few hours worth of use out of it, and yet still be able to go out to dinner without having to worry about the battery dying on me. I'm thinking at this point, it will be wise to keep a second battery charged and just switch out when I get home. I don't really have high expectations for battery life, coming from a PPC-6700, Mogul, and a Touch Pro.

For battery life I'll be happy if I can get from the morning till about 6/7pm. Not a big deal, I have a car charger, and an OEM HTC wall charger in my office.

However what u just said is something that I have heard a couple of times. Being that its not as snappy and fast as previous HTC devices. I would expect it to be on par with the incredible, which IMO is one of, if not the fastest phone I have ever used. Can anyone with an EVO, that has used the incredible chime in on this? Would really like to know how this beast is in the speed department.
 
been reading these forums for a month now and am foaming at the month for this phone.

hd2 only comes with a 1230, our evo has 1500, and this upgrade is 1750!
i have a g1 nad just got used to carrying a spare battery around.
i dont even care, i'm getting an evo no matter what the battery life is like.
charger at work and car charger when possible.

This is all true. And If the last phone I used was the Touch Pro, I wouldnt expect good battery life either...but I am somewhat spoiled now that I have been using the Hero and can get a full day of battery life, and I am on my phone allll dayyyyy loonnnnggggg, even to and from work, I use the hero as my mp3 player.

Lmao, im starting to feel the same way...every day I debate with myself on if im going to get it or not....but I think we all know...once its released and you see people talking about it, or see someone with it...You've got to have it
 
I cant find a thread that has the info on battery life of the Evo. For those who have one. Also is anyone planning on buying a seidio 1750? Im ready to pull the trigger and get one but need more info. thanks and sorry if there's a thread already.
 
I am planning on getting since it doesn't require a bulky cover and then have my 1500 in my laptop bag just in case.
 
I already have received my multifunction battery/phone charger and the Seidio 1750 mAh extended battery. I just can't wait to plug it in on Thursday night (June 3), for the next day will be like Christmas!:D

I wouldn't pull that trigger just yet. Someone posted this link to advertised vs. tested battery capacities and the OEM batteries performed at 95%-100% of the rated levels, while the 3rd party batteries performed much worse (i.e. 60%-80%). So a 1750 3rd party make perform worse than ad 1500 OEM.

Just curious with the jazzy screen and the additional bells and whistles, how well the battery lasts up before having to charge it.

What are the specs (mA) on the battery too?
 
The battery is 1500mAh, and rated for 6 hours talk time. That's about all that we can get that's concrete--the results for each user have varied pretty greatly. Summarily, however, I think that HTC/Sprint said it best at CTIA--the battery life is comparable to other smartphones on the market today.

I didnt know summarily was a word, good stuff.


Anyway, the battery life like mrk said is varied. Some people say its OK, some reviews say its really bad with 4g on and all that. The good thing is if you are coming from a TP2, nexus one, the HTC Hero, and other devices...you can use the battery from those phones, on the HTC Evo.

Any specific stats? I have a Pre also and didn't think any phone could last less than it. With in and out of roaming at work I am at around 30% battery on my Pre by about 12PM with minimal usage. I can't imagine that the Evo could be that bad.
 
It looks like the phone will have about 6.5 hours of talk time, about 4 hours of heavy usage, and moderate usage can get you through a work day on a charge, and light usage through an entire day.

Really, all of the reviews have posted about the same numbers, they've each just had different interpretations of if those numbers are acceptable or not. It seems to me like tech/phone sites side on the battery being acceptable, and those without a good grasp on smartphones as a whole expect something better.
 
Ok, If you have your EVO, I am sure you think it's great, but you are worried about the battery life.
If you are planning to get one these tips help conserve battery

First thing to remember**
This thing has a 4.3 in screen and a 1 ghz processor, it also has 4G so that is more light and data that the battery has to use.

This will not last as long as an old flip phone but these tips will help.

Tips

  • Mail Sync
Meaning if you have a mail account on the stock HTC mail application, by default it updates every 15 minutes.
You can change that buy going to mail>menu>more>settings>Send and recieve> set download frequency. Mine is set to manual.
This means your phone will not wake up every 15 minutes and use data.

  • Weather and other widgets
As nice as the weather, and friendstream and my location widgets look, they also use battery. They have to keep the information up to date, so they are going to update when you are not using them. Make sure when adding a widget select the largest time for evey update, or choose manually. This goes for all of them.

  • 4G
This is the biggest feature on the phone but their are myths out their about it.

Of course 4G over 3G is going to use more battery, but not as much as everyone thinks.

The key with 4G is if you get a good 4G signal, use it if you need fast speeds and don't have WI-FI.

But this is the key, if you don't have 4G TURN IT OFF!! That's what kills the battery. Your phone is always on searching and searching for a 4G signal that the battery only lasts 3-4 hours.
Think about when you had an old phone ans whenever you didn't get a signal it would search for it and get hot, and your battery would die in 2 hours because it kept looking for a signal, this is the same thing.

  • Screen Brightness
Yes, the screen is beautiful and bright, but the brighter it is the more battery.
I keep mine on auto, but for the most battery turn it to the lowest you can.
Settings>sounds and display>brightness>uncheck automatic brightness> and lower it.

  • Haptic feedback and sounds
These are very very minor, and likely to not have a very big effect on battery, but every little bit helps if you want. Turn off all vibrations and sounds from screen taps, keyboard, or the dialer.

  • GPS and WI-FI
This is also not very well known either, but my theory is if you are not using it turn it off, it will conserve battery.

  • Live wallpapers
They are cool, but if you really want to conserve battery leave a normal wallpaper
