Battery Life

you know, the dude getting 3.5 days with his Nexus, but without a SIM, brings to light my suspicion... i think aside from the screen, what drains the battery so much on our Nexuses is the poor radio... as it hunts for signal (whether you know it or not), drains battery immensly...

i'm seriously starting to believe, from my own personal experiences, that the Nexus One's radio and RF performance are quite poor.... and i'm losing hope that any firmware or ROM update will fix it... That EVO 4G is looking better and better (although that might have its own battery life woes to consider, with all that's loaded on it, and the massive screen, yet only a 1500 mAh battery... will have to wait and see)... but i'm thinking at least WiMax would be better for signal than the 3G on my Nexus...

(ps, I'm using a 1600 mAh Seidio battery) - yes, it's better, but not by that much... but i'll take any advantage I can get for now... an extra hour before dying is still worthwhile...

I'll add to this. I had a TMO Nexus One and liked it very much but am an AT&T customer (using it in 2G mode) so I sold it for a AT&T 3G one. I was never disappointed with the TMO versions battery (about 1 day use before being drained). It was better than the iPhone so I was happy. Now that I have the AT&T one, the battery is amazing! I am going 2 full days before charging (and using it in 3G mode)

I initially thought that maybe my TMO Nexus had a bum battery and I just didn't realize it. Your comment about carriers got me thinking. It could be that the power up / power down polling of the carrier cell site is what makes a difference.

3G is rather weak and very fluctuating where I work in London and switching to '2G only' makes a massive difference to the battery life. My last Nokia phone did something clever though : somehow it only switched to 3G when the browser, email or other application requested data but did not stay on 3G when Idle. The nexus seems to stay on 3G as did my HTC Magic before which probably explains the relatively poor battery life. That being said, none of the smartphones I've owned in years did more than 1.5 days between charges with the way I use them so the Nexus is not so much worse.

Is anyone else trying out Juice Defender in the app market? I have been using it for a few days now and it seems like I am getting an extra few hours out of the phone. Doesn't work well if you constantly want stuff pushed to your phone, but for me 4 times an hour is good enough.

Juicedefender doesn't do much for me here, perhaps saves me an hour or two but I usually get between 1-2 days use out of a full battery (2 days is exceptionnal tho).

I have and it didn't work. In fact, I think it drained my phone even more when I had push and 3G on. Defeats the purpose no?

Best way to manage your phone is to just push when you want, but keep it off and unless your doing internet heavy stuff, just keep 3G off.

I am only worried about battery life in the instance of an overnight-er without a charge but with this I can make it. I usually keep it charged all the time when I can, and when its convenient that I have everything on full blast.

Buy some extra battery's from google should help just in case for long trips. They are only $25 bucks. Just bought 2. Can't go wrong, can you?

I am not discrediting it yet. I have been using it for a week and it definitely doesn't drain my battery more then before. It seems to be helping to add another 2 hours to my charge. I am going to try and back this up in a few days by turning it off for the week and see how it feels.

I did purchase the 1600mah battery from seidio and that should at least help out a bit more. Other then that I just keep my charger handy.

I have batteryTimeLife app installed and it gives me voltage readouts. This is more of a record for me because I am curious. My 100% voltage reads 4.123volts unplugged. Is anyone else (specifically with an older phone) get different numbers? Right now at 95% its 4.07. Will report later with lower percentages.

Sorry if this has been discussed before. My battery life seems fine so I'm not gonna dig through this thread.

you are spot on what i get for voltage. at 100% the highest i've seen is 4.172, but usually its 4.167 at 100%. then it drops down to about 4.040 in the low 90's. etc.

try removing the push notifications on gmail/email , put it to manual it works!
I can attest to this. Got my new N1 and sucked the battery dry in no time flat. Disabled polling and push in K-9 and now at the end of the day 12 - 14 hours I'm around 50%.

The only way I know of turning it off is Settings -> Accounts and Sync Settings -> Auto-Sync. This affects all apps that sync in the background.

Last night I was down to 8%, 3.684volts.

Look, there's nothing we can do about poor battery life. I started my life with Android with the G1. Battery life was an issue then and it remains an issue with my N1. I was going to buy an extra battery from the Nexus One website for $30 but I found the battery on sale at cellphoneshop.net for $14.99 so I bought 2 of them. Have not had a problem with any of them. If I think I won't be near a charger for a long time, I take an extra battery with me just in case. The fact is that I have never had to use an extra battery so I think that the battery issue is more psychological than a real problem. But to feed the psychological need, for $14.00 (plus a little more for shipping) get an extra battery.

No, that's not the point.

After upgrading to Froyo, the battery life has been tremendously decreased compared to what it was on Eclair. That's the problem, and we can do something to solve this problem - by sharing our experiences!

In my case, N1 with Froyo can run only just a little more than 12 hours with full charge. (No heavy use. Just a few minutes of calls and 20~30 mins of web surfing, that's all)

Picked up a tip on XDA Devs.

Set your radio to GSM Auto (PRL), should see an increase as it relies on a list from the carrier to know when you're in a 3G area rather than constantly scanning for it.

Hey Guys,

I've had my N1 for a couple of months, and I was always getting bad battery life, but since updating to 2.2, it's become horribly bad. I took my phone off the charger at 5pm last night, used the phone to check email once or twice.. thethered to my ipad for about 5 minutes, turned that off and went home for the night. When I woke up this morning the phone is turned off because of dead battery. The same thing has happened every day this week.

I'm guessing theres a severe problem with my battery, or my phone. Anyone have any idea what I can do about it? Is it possible to do a clean install of Froyo? Should I send the phone back to Google? Would a new battery do it, and if so... anyone know where to get this battery in Europe?

Thanks in advance..

My phone reached 118 F degrees! while used to connect my computer to wi-fi through usb and it started flashing orange and green at the same time, is that normal? hence it was verrrrry hot

Unplugged my phone at 7am (it's 11a now), Been running Last.fm internet radio constantly for about 3hrs + about 5min of phonecalls, some browsing, email, text and g-chat... battery is at 64%
