Battery Life

I had exactly the same concern in the first couple of weeks. I now manage to get a couple of days from it with moderate use. Give it a couple of weeks to bed in. Whilst charging levels shouldn't change....the battery does bed in.

That's fine by the sounds of things.

Bare in mine this is an almost all power smart phone, they pretty much all 'suffer' this amount of battery usage.

I always find that poor signal drains my battery alarmingly fast - can lose 50% in an hour. Check that "Cell Standby" isn't what's using the greatest %age of your battery. If it is, stop sitting where you normally sit. You might even need to move your desk outside. Or switch jobs ;)

Nice practical advice

My device has it's highest battery usage as Cell standby, but that's at around 30%....best thing I ever did was turn off data connections overnight.

Works a charm

I've noticed that if I charge my phone back to 100% from say 60% or 50% the battery will deplete faster than letting it sink to around 20% and then charging it back to 100.

Just an observation.

Just updated to 2.2 and my battery looks like a fuel gauge on a Dodge Viper. Its depleting rapidly! Im not even doing anything on it yet.

Picked up a tip on XDA Devs.

Set your radio to GSM Auto (PRL), should see an increase as it relies on a list from the carrier to know when you're in a 3G area rather than constantly scanning for it.

Good tip... I set it to GSM Auto and a week later saw that it had defaulted back to WCDMA Auto. Does this need to be reset everytime we pull the battery? So I'm not sure how much this helps with the saving the battery life. I know that after I installed Advanced Task Killer, battery life has improved tremendously. Thanks.

I just got mine last week, and I can't complain about the battery. It seems like I'll be able to get about two days decent use out of it, but I'll be charging it at night just to be safe.

I'm guessing this won't work with Belgian carriers? Or is this PRL thing a universal standard employed by all telco's?

Do you want to know how severe the power consumption is on a Nexus One? I can drain the battery while it is plugged in, if I surf the web or talk on the phone.

This is brutal!!! The battery goes dead even when it is plugged in, if you use the phone.

Is this with Froyo or not?

Yes, running 2.2.

Judging from your other posts I'd say you probably have a slightly defective unit. Try calling htc, see what they say.

Although I have to admit froyo has done some weird stuff to the battery and power consumption. When fully charged and kept on the charger, the battery seems inclined to drop a slight charge before returning to 100% rather then retain the full charge as in pre-froyo.
Can anyone confirm or do I best justcondition my battery again after froyo?

Yes, running 2.2.
Was the battery good with 2.1 and then became horrible with 2.2 or has it always been horrible?

On another note, I tried putting my battery into Airplane mode last night to see how it'd affect the battery. In 6 hours, it went down 20%. I have a sick feeling that an app is constantly running in the background and won't let the phone 'sleep'.

Oh...and I think part of the blame for my horrid battery life is due to the fact that I've started using my (new) spare battery. I'm thinking that it hasn't been 'conditioned' that and bad app(s) might be the cause of my battery issues.

How did you put the battery into Airplane mode??:eek::eek: ;)

Probably

I would say batteries come 'conditioned' already and that those 'you have to fully charge and discharge the first couple of times' things are old-fashioned beliefs inherited from the early lithium-battery technology days.

OPPS!!! :o lol ...well I simply put my battery on an air plane ;)

Well I'd say that too...but I simply feel that it works. For my stock battery, the battery at first was horrible. I discharge it a few times and got great result with it after on 2.1

I'm afraid my battery's been bitten by the drain bug aswel since froyo. I didn't notice at first after updating, but after checking my juiceplotter for a month back I noticed my battery was still at 40% after 26 hours of medium use. Where now it's below 20% after 19 hours of light use (few hours of wifi, less then 30 mins of EDGE data enabled, display at minimum unless for outdoor viewing, not for more then a few minutes).
I have no idea why, I'm monitoring my apps with system panel but no app in particular seems to be a battery hog. I really can't find what's draining my battery this hard so I'm also conditioning it by running a few full cycles.. no improvement so far tho :(

How do you change your phones radio to GSM Auto?

*#*#4636#*#* in the dialer -> phone info -> GSM auto (PRL)

I still don't know if PRL is any use for me here, not gonna test now, conditionning the battery and monitoring drainage under normal/low usage now. GOD I hate froyo for doing this to my battery :(

From what I've read (and I should probably mention that I'm an IT person), it's not FroYo that drains the battery. FroYo runs the processes more efficiently and when an app is not in use, it does not use the processor therefore having no impact on the battery. E.g. after I sign out of Yahoo! Messenger, it still appears as "open" but in fact it is idle and has no impact on the battery. Killing this process wouldn't really do anything.

I have noticed this on previous [non-smart] phones I've owned: 2 things seriously drain the battery, and I think this applies to the N1 as well:
1. the screen: The screen is large and bright, the more it stays on, the more it drains the battery (AMOLED is an efficient technology, but it still needs juice). If you constantly look at your phone (to check for notifications or the weather, etc), even thought it doesn't feel like you're actually "using" it, it still slowly drains the battery. Solution: stop playing with it and just let it be. The weather can change unexpectedly, but especially if you're in a building you probably don't need to check it every 15 minutes.

2. the radio transmissions: I remember how excited I was when I got my first phone that had bluetooth. Not long after that I noticed that using the BT headset seriously drained the battery. I had a similar revelation when I first surfed the net on a phone. The worst is wireless tethering: you're connected to the [GSM] network, using radio signal. You have another 3G data connection, and a wifi connection, both also using signal. The phone is acting as a router forwarding packets, so the processor is also being used. That's a HUGE drain on the battery.

I think that generally, "moderation" is the key to longer battery life. If you need the phone to last 2 or more days, refrain from tethering, try to avoid using a BT headset, minimize browsing and playing. I know, I know... why get a cool toy like a N1 for "moderate" use? I'm just saying that if you know you need the phone to last longer in certain situations, you can tailor your usage to fit your needs.

Has anyone tried using it as just a phone (no wifi, no 3g, no music- just calls and texts) to see how long it lasts?

The Nexus One doesn't last very long on phone calls alone. I feel that the radio is inefficient wrt this. Google quoted that the N1 should be able to handle over 10 hrs of talk time on 2G. Starting with 100% battery, if I just talked, I got around 4hrs of talk time, after which, the battery is dead (less than 10% left). I've done this a few times when I talked to my friends. This was with Eclair, not sure how the talk time is with FroYo.

Interesting question. I think I'd actually have trouble doing that.
Battery life then would just depend on 2 factors: screen on time and talktime.
So it'll still just vary, depending on wether you're a heavy texter or frequent caller.

If I wanted a phone to do that Id get one of those pay as you go phones that just has a dialpad and a screen if youre lucky. I didnt buy one of the best phones on the market to disable of its features just so it could work properly.

In lieu of that response, I have yet to run into a battery issue before its time to put it on the charger at night. Ive been going 16 hour days with Wifi/GPS/Bluetooth all enabled and still get 25-40% remaining. Ive got no complaints anymore other than dropping calls and reception. We shall see how the Captivate fairs when I pick that up this weekend.
