Battery Life

How can I check? I thought all the battery monitoring apps would not work with KitKat. Google search seems to be the thing that keeps popping up on my battery stock app.

My first suspicion is that you have OK Google activated. It's cute, but not worth the battery suck. Turn it off by unchecking the Hotwords option in Search settings.

I've had a nasty wake lock from Google search a few times even with OK Google off. Easiest thing to do is kill the app

I got to the point that I left Gel and just greenified the Google search app and turned off location all together. Made a big difference.

I'm going to disable it now and check tomorrow if I've noticed a big change!

But is there anyway to have Okay Google still on but only when Google Now is actually on screen, if that makes sense?

I do like Okay Google but I always swipe up to launch Google Now then say Okay Google, it's a habit.

No I did turn it off. It is really weird. Some days I will do just fine, and others something will just eat right through my battery. Normally when this happens Google search is one of the highest % of things on the battery usage.

I just did a factory reset on my phone last night, and battery life is great today. I hope it helps, but I don't know yet.

Here's an update of my battery after turning off Okay Google!

I can see a massive improvement, I'm usually on about 50 - 40 % by now! Screen has only been on for about 17 minutes though...

It's Google Play Services that seems to be killing my battery right now!

Google Play services seems to be affecting a lot of people though, I don't want to have to reboot my device constantly, take a look at this article It's Not Just You - Google Play Services Seems To Be A Battery Hog Today

Yeah, it seems to be an issue in the current version that is installed on devices. Until Google updates the services again, the only way to stop the wakelock is to reboot. In other news, 4.4.1 update should be coming within the next week if not sooner according to rumors.

I just did that as well.

Uninstalled Google search and maps and then reinstalled from market and greenified.

Hopefully that helps with the battery problem!

Reintalling the apps actually helps? I might switch to Nova Launcher for a day and see how that goes

With 17 minutes of screen time my phone would look exactly like that as well and I have Ok Google turned on. You should really do a comparison using the same screen time because displays make a huge difference in battery.

This is what confuses me, I don't seem to be getting the same battery as others! Can you tell me what other features you have turned on / off?

I've gone into the Google account in Settings and unchecked everything I don't use or don't need to be auto-synced, I set location to local only and I turn off photo auto-backup. With hotwords unchecked and Google Now not turned on, that pretty much gives me great battery life.

Then again, I really don't use most of that stuff. Comes down to how much you want to use Google Services and how "in the background" you want them to be.

I have BatteryGuru which does that automatically for other apps but I'll go check my Google apps too

And by location to local do you mean GPS only?

I personally dont use battery saving apps. Seems kinda backwards to have an app running to save battery no ? ;)

I think he meant device only

Tis true but BatteryGuru did help me a lot with my Nexus 4, assumed it would do the same but apparently not! I'm gonna uninstall it now and see how it goes

Yup, got mine set to device only too! I also just manually edited some of the refresh times like Facebook to 4 hours since I barely ever use them!

That's the one of the best ways to save battery... Limit how often your device has to wake up.

Don't use Google books, movies, newsstand ect? Don't sync it

Don't need your email checked every 5 minutes? Have it sync every hour or manually check

Ect ect ect. The more your device sleeps the more juice you'll have

It seems a lot of people's N5s are varying. For me, this is what I turned off.

Auto sync: OFF. I manually sync apps, and push notifications do the rest.

Location Sharing: OFF
Location History: OFF These two are mainly because I don't want Google to always know exactly where I am. Plus, they are constantly checking your location, which means less battery life.

I have location set to battery saving, I hardly use google maps enough to need pinpoint accuracy. Even so, I can use it like a normal paper map that you can't talk to and just guide myself like we used to have to do.

My screen brightness is usually on auto, because adjusting it all the time is too much work. lol

I have Google Now and Ok Google activated because I use those two features frequently. Especially since they are integrated with GEL (which I am loving).

I also frequently check my battery status to see what apps are using the most battery. I try to make to get it so screen is #1 and google services are #2. I've already sacrificed a few of my favorite apps because they would DRAIN the battery.

Last but not least, turning off your LTE/Wifi when not using it will help greatly. I keep my LTE on always, but that is only because I know I can make it through the day on one charge. I charge my phone before I go to bed because I don't like to leave it on the charger after 100% I keep it above 90% before I fall asleep and I am usually left with 40% when I get home from work the next day around 5pm. So my battery fairs pretty well with these settings. Better than what I upgraded from, and definitely more than 17 minutes screen time. I usually have around 4 hours a day or more of screen on.

I used to use this app on my HTC One X because the battery on that thing was horrendous even with the built in HTC power saver. BatteryGuru helped a TON on that phone, which is why I was confident in it's ability with my Nexus 5. Well sadly, I hardly noticed a difference on the N5. Actually, my battery was worse because even though BatteryGuru saved some battery, it was constantly running, so even with the screen off it drained battery. With BatteryGuru installed my N5 would drain 25-30% overnight, after uninstalling I only lose around 3% overnight. So imo it is not worth it on the N5.

As long as I get my notifications I'm fine :D

I've uninstalled BatteryGuru and I am hoping it's gonna help a lot! I'm also gonna follow some of your settings and see if they help me in any way!

MAJOR thanks :D

I'm going to sleep now so I'l be able to check how much percentage is lost compared to before
