Battery Use: 3g vs WIFI

Depends on how you use it. Actively using wifi uses less juice than actively using 3g. If you are not using wifi just leaving it turned on will suck up more battery than 3g on standby. So, use wifi when you can but turn it off when you aren't using it. This will give you the best battery life.

I agree with mkbkr, if you leave your wifi connection on compared to your 3G you will definitely notice the wifi eat up more battery than just the 3G. Try testing it out by leaving wifi on for a few hours then turn if off for just 3G. That's the case for most electronic devices anyway, the manufacturers tell you in their manual to turn off wifi when not in use to save battery.
If any others don't know already, when you turn on Wifi the 3G connection disconnects and wifi takes over. I saw some people asking why their 3G icon in the status bar disappears when Wifi gets turns turned on.

I use Wifi quite often. However, I don't really notice that much of a difference with battery usage. Why you may ask? Well that's because I use JuiceDefender (JD).
JD has saved me hours on my battery. It turns on/off services when I'm not using them. Not only but it actively remembers the wi-fi networks I use often. That way if I'm near one that I normally use it turns on wi-fi for me.
All in all JD has so many features and options that i'm sure it will save anyone, (including those that use 3G and Wifi) tons of battery usage
There is a free version that does a great job. The ultimate version is paid but gives you even MORE control of how your services eat up your battery. Complete with App whitelisting and blacklisting.

yea its a nice app i have ultimate juice.. can do things like based on gps locations turn on and off wifi if a known wifi is within reach.. aka leave the house and wifi turns off, as you get close/home it turns it on because it knows there is wifi in the area

Now that sounds like a handy feature, I tried juice defender and didnt care for it, the free app.
Just another task that is running down the battery. I get pretty decent results with no task killer, I even took off the preloaded one.

I have the Ultimate Version which I use to really REALLY control the battery. I use the location feature Shabby talked about.The only thing is for some reason someone initially edited my post and removed my link and replaced it with the Ultimate One.

I appreciate the extra effort. Actually, after I read your post I went ahead and bought the Ultimate one. I think it was about $7. I have it running now, but have not taken the time yet to set all the goodies. Sounds pretty slick.

Are you sure about that? When I search for juice defender, I see ultimate, plus and beta - not the normal free version. Bearing in mind that ultimate and plus are only 'activator' apps, that unlock features in the free app, there is currently no way for a new customer to use juice defender plus/ultimate.
If anything, that encourages people not to purchase.
Given that, and the fact the beta has been there for months, this is more likely a temporary take down of the normal free app.

I've been using the standard free one for ages. What he did was to stabilize the current beta release and then put it for download as the free version. The Beta project actually wasn't available until recently. If you notice the free standard one I linked has 34k downloads. Whereas the Beta one doesn't have that much.
He completely removed the stabilized Standard free one and replaced it with the buggy one. I'm sure this is to encourage you to get the Plus and Ultimate ones. Granted I already paid for Ultimate but I think it's extremely unfair for those people whom been using the free stabilized Standard one all this time. It's just poor practice on his part. If he really didn't want people downloading the stabilized free one he shouldn't have put it up in the first place.
Still at least the free Beta though not as stable as the old free release was, is still better then nothing.

I couldn't see any mention of a removal on their website, although the blog only went up to december. Have they actually announced anything about removing the app?

Gad-zooks! 250k downloads for the beta? WOW I'm not sure what your looking at but this is what I see when I search the android market.
BTW: I found out what he did. He removed the free stabilized version because he incorporated it with the Beta. When you use the Ultimate Key it automatically unlocks all the features for you but provides you with a more stable app. It's only the free beta one that has the basic function.
The number you took a screenshot of is the number of people who have rated the app, to let you judge the accuracy of the rating. That's why it's next to the 5 stars.
If you check out the market pages, you'll see to the right on the 'About this app' bar it lists the current number of installs. The stable and beta releases are up to 1-5,000,000 and 100-500,000 respectively.

Yeah that's the exact assumption I had come across. I will admit I mistook the rating as the download quantity. My interpretation was that it was 4 or 5 stars with 30k downloads. They need to make that a little clearer. I do see what you mean about the download count.
