How can I over clock so my battery can last longer need some help understanding overclocking

You have your terminology a little mixed up. No biggie. You would want to UNDERclock to save battery. Overclocking will speed up the phone but will use more battery.

You do so using an app like SetCPU and you will need a custom kernel.

What ROM/Kernel are you currently on?

I'm using a stock rom and I don't know how to check what kernel I am using also I would like to be able to switch my settings at ease

Chances are you are on the stock kernel as well then.

First thing your going to need is a custom kernel. At this point I would suggest Lithids Aggressive Freedom kernel for you. It is undervolted so that will save you even more battery. It can be downloaded here:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/63060876/Aggressive-Freedom-v0.9-UNIVERSAL-signed.zip

You transfer it to your SD card and install it in recovery after wiping both cache and dalvik cache.

Then install setcpu and you can change your max clock speed and governor.

ok im done now what settings do i set for high performance and what settings for battery conservation in terms of the max and min threshold give me a ratio of some sort

I always overclock (set the max to around 1113MHz) and use smartass as a governor. The phone is hardly ever at the max for me so I like to allow it to get up there when it needs to but it stays mostly under 422MHz

If you want to underclock set it somewhere below the stock 998. I would go in the 700 range. Use either smartass or interactiveX governor.

Just set it and play with the phone for a bit before you check the set on boot box so you know everything's fine

It's all about preference man! I am a battery whore who gets mad when my phone lags...yeah...very contradictory of me. To compromise I open my phone up to almost all frequencywhile using smartass type governor that will figure out where the phone needs to be at, and still get a good screen off profile. I suggest looking in my undervolting kernel thread and reading the links from ocnbreeze or rxpert (can't remember who linked it) and read the kernel for dummies thread. But as am example for you, maybe 245 min and 1036 max to start with ondemand for performance. Just remember to NOt check the set at boot box, because if your phone dont like the ranges and bootloops, you won't be able to get the phone back on without restoring a nandroid.

**damn, I guess I am officially a member...got my "I got ninja'd" cherry popped. Now i just need to throw my rom and kernel in the Sig block!!!! 8-)

4G is a tough one.

If I leave my 4G radio on it's because I'm using Pandora or downloading some apps. I only use it if I feel I need it. For web browsing it doesn't feel much faster for me than the 3G does. But when I need to update 10 apps it's the best.

The 4G radio will use quite a bit of juice especially if you aren't in a 4G area and it's always searching for a connection.

3G stagnant is much better than the 4G and Wifi is the best on battery consumption.

I have a 4G connection where I am and some times it just drops the connection and picks it back up when it wants to. It's weird.

For a Setcpu setting I am usually using InteractiveX and have a 245 min with a 998 or 1036 max. I don't go crazy on the overclock but I also don't play any games on my phone.

how long does your battery last?

Well it depends.
I do have a Sprint 2600 battery so I have been able to run Pandora for a full 7 1/2 hours, make 20 minutes of phone calls, sync to Gmail accounts, Gtalk, Latitudes, and play a little bit of Words with friends.

I never have an issue where I'm nervous about the battery life.
Next week might try using my stock battery with one of the 4.67 Roms. Those roms do seem to have the best battery life of any Sense roms while running the stock kernel.

I never use 4G. If I'm on a leightweight rom and have access to wifi I can last 3+days of light use. My best is 3.5 full days.

I almost always make it a full 24 hours without needing to charge.

With my normal use: calls, text, light browsing...I'm currently at 12 hours with 80% left with miui and tiamat 3.3.7

I use tasker to turn on 4g based on how I'm using my phone. if the market is up, or I'm streaming music/video I want my 4g connection, as spotty as it is. then as soon I'm done (the app is closed) the 4g radio turns off.

the only issue I've found is that if the phone changes radios between 3g/4g in the middle of a download it hangs and I have to cancel the download and restart.
