Bell Atrix [Canada]

Ordered my unlock code from cellunlock dot net on Thursday at 11am. Received it Saturday at 6:40pm.

I tested the speeds on the telus network in Burlington, ON and got:

1st test
2.93mbit down
0.34mbit up
331ms

2nd test
4.52mbit down
0.34mbit up
1834ms

3rd test
3.31mbit down
0.32mbit up
193ms

Hope this helps any other Canadians who were hoping to run this phone on Telus.

I presume that is the AT&T version you've tested - the upload speeds are capped at .34Mbps as confirmed by your testing. AT&T has disabled HSUPA - hence the relatively slow upload speeds. My wife's iPhone gets 1.5Mbps on upload on her iPhone on the same network as me (Fido). Hopefully, Bell has not capped upload speeds...

Just grabbed the Atrix off of kijiji.... now waiting for the unlock code. If anyone is looking for a 32GB iPhone 4 from Rogers with box and all accessories in the GTA PM me.

Can't wait to use this thing.

I do hope so too!! I don't think Bell has a track record of capping the HSUPA.

How much did you get the Atrix?

That's wonderful...except what good is the dock when we won't have the phone for another 2 weeks?
:p

I've had the Atrix for a week now. AT&T unlocked running on Rogers. Cheers.

Very cool! Great to see ya here ;) Call me if you run into anything. Cheers.

Yep, I can confirm the Cap. I'm on Rogers and the best U/L I can get is 0.36 Mbps. D/L's go up to 5-odd Mbps thus far. BTW, thx to your other post about "payphone" caller ID. I've disabled Name Display and all is good now.

My only gripe with this right now is that you still got the phone from a source that got it through AT&T. It's possible the cap could be built into the phone, not the network (but asked for by the network).

At least, that's my wishful thinking.

That's why I don't want the AT&T version...the firmware has an upload cap. I'll wait 10 days and check out the Bell version which hopefully doesn't have any cap.

I don't think the U/L matters that much anyways. Even when sending pics, images are resized anyways. I haven't felt the need for faster upload speeds at all. Just curious, what is that you upload that you need a high U/L speed for?

It sounds like they are more interested in future-proofing themselves by not having a cap. I agree the cap should not be there. The device should be allowed to perform the way the engineers designed it to perform, and nothing less.

Lots of things that the Atrix is designed to do, like upload data or video to a website or online server. And when the Atrix is in its Lapdock, it's essentially a laptop where you may need to upload large documents to a work server. I don't intend to buy the lapdock, but I will be getting the media dock to use the phone as a portable computing device with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor. So yeah, I need the upload speeds to be as high as possible, not capped.

I thought about getting the Multimedia dock. Then I realized, it will be one of those things whose novelty will wear off in 48 hours. I'd rather use my iPad 3G or a Netbook rather than docking a phone and using a cumbersome setup :)

That being said, I do agree about the principle of having an uncapped phone. The cap doesn't bother me, and I don't see it bothering most users, but it will be nice to have the higher upload speeds for that odd situation when you do need to upload a largish file from a phone.

I have faith in the folks @ XDA to overcome this cap, if it is implemented at the phone level :)

They already did for the AT&T network, and the "mod" (if it can even be called that) is ridiculously easy to do.

Is there a link for this? If you are talking about editing the build.prop file, you need to use some special software and if not used correctly, can brick your phone. BTW, I don't think anyone has got this working either.

So saw this from another Forum, Atrix owner in Toronto:
I have got as high as 7.4mbps and can consistently get 3-5mbps up here on Rogers.
I hope my Atrix gets the higher of those kind of speed! I'd be soaked! :D

This mod specifically was used on an HTC Inspire on the AT&T network. The mod is simply using a customized APN in the phone, and it doesn't work for the Atrix on another network. The upload cap is a firmware limit imposed by AT&T and it's in the phone, so an AT&T Atrix on any network will have the same 300kbps upload cap.

As for the build.prop file mod, someone mentioned that it doesn't work for the Atrix either and you need special software for it to work that can easily brick your phone, all of which is correct.

What we need to do is wait to see if the Bell version has an upload cap. Hopefully not.

The Atrix supports up to 14mbps speeds for download, so as long as the network you're on supports HSDPA to 14mbps in your area you can get some decent speeds.

You've never used custom firmwares or hacks? That's the best part about Android, IMHO :) I've never bricked my phone despite trying out about 25 ROMs and numerous mods on my Samsung Captivate. XDA is a very supportive community. I'm pretty sure that their Devs will sort out HSUPA & Bootloader in due course. Cheers.

I wasn't talking about flashing different ROM's which I have done to get generic versions on my HTC phones. I was talking about specialized software (RadioComm) designed to hack into the phone's firmware using access via the chipset and make changes. It's not at all like flashing a ROM and if you hit the wrong checkmark, your phone is bricked and there is no way to reflash it back to life - the only option is to return the phone and hope they don't know why it was bricked.

I'm pretty sure they won't...no one has been able to crack the bootloader in Moto phones, and many have tried. It would be nice if they could crack the code, but I'm not holding my breath.
:p
As for HSUPA, I think AT&T disabled it for now due to low bandwidth on the towers and will enable it later with a firmware update. I'm still hoping the Bell version here in Canada is not limited in this fashion. If so, I'll be returning it and wait for another company to make something similar.
:(

Actually Radio Modem & Kernel installs were quite easy on the Captivate as well. Really, it's not that difficult, lol. It's just a matter of how lazy you are: Read a lot and you will be fine. Take guesses and you will brick. Simple as that.

Why agonize? Just get the Atrix regardless and enjoy it. The reasons you have outlined for U/L justification are novelty for the most part, IMHO. You will get bored of the cumbersome dock setup in no time (I know 'cos I have a pal who has both the MM & Laptop docks). It's a wonderful phone. If you don't like it, just trade or resell on RFD :) Cheers.

haha, I highly doubt Rogers can give me double digit mbps. I will be happy for half of that speed!!!

THE BELL STORES ALREADY HAS THE ATRIX LIVE DEMO OUT (Toronto)!!!! :D I asked the rep and he said that all of the Bell stores got the Atrix on Monday but they are still setting the whole thing up.

If they aren't on display, ask them! I was able to play one this morning and it didn't have the security lock band on it. So it was a more enjoyable experience. Confirmed that the Bell's Atrix does NOT have a HSUPA cap!

I got 1.5-2mbps upload speed from speednet.com and the rep I was talking to said that he got up to 3mbps UL a few times.
If you're getting the Atrix for another carrier, it is good to note that you can't buy the phone off contract. The Bell rep showed me the Atrix sales manual and it says that you need to activate the phone but it didn't say that it has to be post pay. So a work around he told me was that I can get the phone unsubsidized with a pay-as-you go plan. Activation is free and I get a $15 credit for my PAYG account. So this is what I'm doing :D
I'm so stoaked and excited!!!

Once again, we're not talking about Samsung phones, we're talking about locked bootloaders on Motorola phones, which are signed and/or encrypted to prevent using other firmware. There is NO way to install other firmware on the Atrix. But now that I know I can have a look at one before buying it on the 17th, I'll be putting it through its paces tonight to see if it lives up to the hype...

Well with the bootloader being signed instead of encrypted (Milestone/DX/D2), I am hoping that the Dev community is able to break the codes!

OK, that's why I said XDA are working on cracking the BL :) BTW, most folks who try store Demos are not impressed complaining of lag. Best to buy, try and return if you don't like it. Demos of any phone are almost always full of junk and misconfigured settings. One tip: Do a hard reset via Settings and then try it out. Cheers.

Good to hear that there's no cap. Now, what do we DO with all that uncapped upload speeds? ;)
