Bell Atrix [Canada]

I really like this phone. I've had BlackBerries, iPhone's and the Desire HD. But I can honestly say this is the best phone I've owned.
I got scared a bit today for a bit, once I left my home wifi, I couldn't connect to Telus data network... it was like WTF???
I had to enter the VPN settings for Telus, reboot the phone and bam, everything works.

Where did you get this phone off contract? I've tried 3 bell stores, wireless wave, future shop, and best buy. No one is selling this phone outright, WTF. I don't want to waste 100 bucks on a month to month deal just to get this phone.

I bought it at Future Shop in Whitby. The Best Buy across the street would not sell it to me, so I tried FS and got it.
The only way he sold it to me outright was if I got a month-to-month contract. So I picked the cheapest one, which was $30 voice only, then there's a $35 activation fee.
The next day when everything worked with my Telus SIM, I called Bell and cancelled... the guy sounded pissed on the phone, he knew what I was doing but there's nothing they can do about it. He first tried to get me to return the phone to Future Shop and they would cancel everything out, so I told the dude... no, I'm keeping the phone just cancel my month-to-month.

Just curious, how do you compare the Atrix with the DHD? There are a lot of folks who claim that the DHD is a better phone. Thanks.

I liked the DHD, but I like the Atrix better.
I like the form factor of HTC phones. At first i liked the size of the 4.3" screen, even though its resolution was not as good as the Atrix, but after a day in your pocket and wrapping your hand around that beast it was to big for me. I think 4" is perfect for a phone.
The sound quality on the DHD was terrible, very tiny and not loud at all. You could not hear that thing ring... forget about notifications. The vibrate motor was very strong, similar to the Atrix. The notification light can only be set for green and hides behind the speaker grill so it was very faint and you could hardly see it blinking. No front camera, i don't use it much but i want the option there. No dual core, but the phone is very fast. I think the Atrix is quicker... it should be cause of the dual core but feels similar in scroll speeds through home screens.
The biggest disappointment was battery life. I would pull it off the charger at 9am and by 6pm it would be completely dead, and that was with light use. I think the Incredible S would be great.

Thanks for the info, I bought one today from the Bell store. Cost me an extra 65 due to the month to month and activation fee. Does anyone unlock phones on the weekend?

I didn't pay mine when I switched but I was also due for an upgrade.

I also did a speed test. D>2003 U> 434 and im in Alberta

haha...I'm hoping that wireless wave will allow me to buy it without asking for info. I think someone posted here or XDA that they got their Atrix 'off contract' and the guy at wireless wave didn't ask for the info.

I'm crossing my fingers that I'm just as lucky.

Picked up my Atrix today (first phone ever lol) after hours of researching and browsing this forum and XDA!

Tried The Source first and was unsuccessful in getting it off-contract there. I then went to TBooth (across from The Source in the mall) and without any hassle the rep sold it to me for $599 + tax without any contract. No info or anything required. Now I need to buy an unlock code hopefully the one Sparro provided is legit. Anyone know of other good places to get cheap unlock codes?

Thanks, I'll add that to my list :)

OK, for those agonizing about capped HSUPA speeds .. jkrohn @ XDA puts it very well (what I've been trying to say here as well):

"cellular video calls"
"upload files or content"

That's what I've been trying to say here too. Downloading is no longer the only thing we do on smartphones. With gigabytes of storage space, we can carry along large files of any format on our smartphones, even more options with the Atrix for business use. I was using the Multimedia dock tonight for some browsing which was fine. But trying to upload a large document is painfully slow at only 400kbps.

We're paying for 7,200kbps upload and we should be getting it, plain and simple.

I really like this new phone, but if Motorola does not open up HSUPA and fix the niggling bugs in the firmware with the v2.3 update, I'll be selling it and buying something better when it's available (I've contacted Motorola Canada and USA already about these issues).

I bought mine at WirelessWave without any hassles or questions at all. That was after hitting BestBuy and FutureShop with no luck. I had a backup plan in my head if they wanted to ask some questions like my wife is on Bell and this is a gift for her as she hates her iPhone4 and wants an Android phone. She really is on Bell, so worst case scenario is I'd have her buy it with me and use my credit card.
:D

Not as cheap, but I do know that Cellunlock.net and MobileinCanada.com are both legit and deal in CDN dollars. Expect to pay $20 for the code. Cellunlock is $40 but the AC discount is 50% off.

Hi Roze, that was probably me on XDA (I'm everywhere!). It was a girl actually selling me the phone, but the manager piped in when I showed interest in the Multimedia dock, and he offered a discount.
:D

I think I see a pattern here...the smaller outlets with lower sales seem to be more willing to make a sale, any sale, when they get the chance...worked for me too.
;)

haha

That's what I'm going to be doing if they ask me for my account info. 'This is a bday gift for our best friend'. And then break down and 'cry', if they reject me. I've got it ALL planned! Dress cute and innocent and be all 'I don't know what to do if I can't get this for my friend' *cries*. I've learnt that when the girl is more clueless...she gets better treatment than when she looks professional and knows what she's talking about.

Hehehe...well a gal's gotta do what she's gotta do to get her Atrix!
Put on a good show! Maybe you can fenagle a discount too!
:D

Yup, and maybe that's why my wife calls me the Alpha and Omega man...ya think?
;)
Wait...I get confused easily...what she really says is, "get off the damned {insert device name here} already!"

hey guys, gettin off topic a bit, but do any of you own a screen protector for it, there are none at pmall as of thursday.... im just using the plastic piece with the phone for now, i ordered a body set from bestskinsever, but i want a legit screen protector for now... and it is no where to be found

The wireless wave near my bell store had some "iShieldz" brand for sale, it was quite pricey but it was a different installation than I was used to. Basically it came with a solvent that you had to spray on it, then you squeegeed it on the screen and it cured. It was 20$ however but I was desperate for a screen protector and the bell rep ripped off my stock plastic guard when he was setting up my phone. TBH with all the screen protectors i've used and installed(iTouch, PSP3k, PSPGO, NDSlite, NDSiXL) I must say im rather happy with it. I'm very careful when I apply screen protectors but I usually get a bubble or some dust or whatever under, this one is flawless. I do recommend it but it is pricey like I said.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you tend to put your phone in your pocket with change and/or keys all the time. The Gorilla Glass is quite scratch resistant, just like the ads for the iPhone. So unless you've scrached screens before and tend to be more forgiving about where your phone is at any moment, don't worry about it.

I've owned the iPhone 3G, 4, HTC Legend, Desire, and now the Atrix. I bought a BSE screen protector for the iPhone 3G, but took it off after a while as it reduced sensitivity and accuracy. I've never put a protector on since then and never had a scratch or mark on any of them. That includes my wife dropping the HTC Legend face down onto the edge of a tempered glass table from standing height and the only mark was a slight ding in the aluminum body.
:)
As others have stated, screen protectors are really from the days of plastic windows over the LED/LCD displays. Glass is pretty tough...it's not impervious, but it is scratch resistant. And the glass on newer phones is even more resistant to scratches.

YMMV.

Agreed. But how many video calls & large file uploads are made by most people? Not me for sure :) That being said, I do hope that the Cap gets removed, due to principle of getting what you pay for. However, it's not such a big deal as to be a deal breaker for most. Cheers.

I don't like screen protectors... to plasticy feeling for my liking. But the glass in made from Gorilla glass, just like the iPhone 4, very durable... I have never damaged any screens on my phones, but I've been lucky and never dropped it on a hard surface.

If I had more time on the 17th., I would have went to a mall and checked with the smaller stores to see if I can get it without the month-to-month nonsense.
But, I did manage to sell my wifes old iPhone 3G which was defective for $75 bucks, so it offset the extra $65 I had to pay.

*yay* Got my Atrix yesterday for the off contract price!!! Was stoaked that I (...ok bf) didn't pay the extra $65. Got the phone at T-Booth and they had the Incipio Feather case for $30, so got that! :D Thus I'm very happy, got the phone and case I wanted. So far, getting use to motoblur and and all of the settings. I find the phone very very fast compared to how I remembered it from my Nexus One. It has been 4 months since I last own an Android phone, so I do feel a bit 'overwhelmed' and a complete 'newb' :/

The T-Booth guy said that if I unlocked my phone, I void my warranty :( I clarified with him if he meant 'carrier unlock' or 'root' and he said both voids my warranty. Is this right? I didn't know carrier unlock voids your warranty :/

Yeah I got it from T-Booth too and they said the same thing to me. Unlocking will indeed void the warrenty. I was planning on getting that unlock code (the site Sparro linked) right when I got back from the mall but luckily I decided against that and just gave it a day or so of just messing with the phone. Ended up being a good call because I actually just exchanged my Atrix today since the previous one was acting kinda funny (randomly typing and turning screen into landscape mode).

Also speaking of cases I saw at T-Booth the Otterbox one buts its $50!! Madness! Any cheap alternative? I don't need a bomb proof case lol.
