Was so hopeful....sigh.
How HARD IS IT to simply have an ALARM with the calendar!? All I want is for an alarm to sound, say 1 hour or 1 day before event, just like any other alarm, and keep alarming until I push 'snooze' or 'shut up'? My POS Samsung feature phone from 2 years ago and my Helio Ocean from 4 years ago, both did this. My spankin' new, high tech android phone makes a 'beep*' and THAT'S IT.
Sigh.

Idiot (edit): ok, may have jumped the gun here. snooze does make the notify sound, but as I sit here, it appears to keep doing so, so maybe it will work out.

I use Business Calendar Beta ... it syncs with Google Calendars. It has a default 30-min reminder for all new appointments. It also allows adding multiple additional reminders ... so you can be reminded a couple of days before the event (for e.g.) and 1-hour before that same event ... which is essential for someone like me with a memory bank that needs frequent refresh cycles 
The only odd thing is that even though I don't use the native Calendar app .. it fires up occassionally in the background (I see it on my Task List). Why?

+1 for Business Calendar. I was looking for a good calendar widget that would give me a month view and show events from Google calendars. Business Calendar was exactly what I was looking for!
Pros:
Syncs with Google calendars.
Widget can display day, week, month views.
Widget can toggle easily between text/bar view.
Tapping on a date on the widget takes you to that day in the calendar.
Cons:
Calendar widget appears a little squat. My home screens have 5 rows instead of 4 (thanks to GO Launcher), so it would be nice if there was a 5x4 widget.

I just took another look at business calendar. The widget is really nice, with lots of functionality, and lots of customizability. But where I think it falls short is the date picker, which uses the horrible stock date picker with which you have to change the date from the third to the 23rd by pressing a + button 20 times, or by calling up the keyboard, all of that without a calendar visible on the screen for you to know whether it's really the 23rd or the 24th that you want.
With Calengoo and pocket informant, changing the date pops up a calendar, and all you have to do is tap the date you want.

I don't see that to be a negative. I guess it depends on how one approaches it. To add a new event ... I scroll to the date and select the time. If the date is several weeks away I select Month view to navigate to it. If the date is several months away (which is rare, 1 out of 10 times, in my case) I touch "More" -> "Go To" to pick some date for that month ... the view shows up and I scroll to the desired date. In short, not a show stopper at all.
Calengoo has both the calendar date picker and the scroller date picker which is quicker to use if you want to pick a date years in the past or future (just tap the month name of the calendar picker and you will get the scroller).
I use Calengoo for my business and as a journal to keep track of past events. I have about 10 years of data from my Treo/datebk5 and future events up to 5 years in the future (almost 5000 events). Calengoo's search feature allows me to search and display all past and future events. Calengoo also saves your last search parameter so you do not have to retype your search over again (I requested this feature and the developer added it in about two days!!). Business Calendar limits your search and display to about one year in the past. Pocket Informant will search and display all the events, but the search result display is more difficult to read (eg. IIRC, the all day events did not have dates displayed) compared to Calengoo.

got it. Yes, those are about equally fast:
in CG:
triple tap for new event, date, tap (n times) to select month, tap (once) to select day.
in BC:
menu, month view, swipe (n times) to select month, long press to add event.
But suppose I want to look at that week when scheduling something, in more detail than in the month view. you think I could just, and then switch to week view, but that doesn't seem to work. not only is week view missing as a menu item from month view, but if I go back first to agenda view so that I can get week view from there, it jumps back to the current week, instead of the one that I was trying to look at. so as far as I can tell, my only way to get there is, from week view, menu, more, go to, which pops up the stock date picker. Whereas in CG, I can get the efficient date picker in fewer clicks-- or I have the option of selecting month view with one tap, swiping to the right month, tapping a day in the week I want, and then tapping one button at the bottom of the screen to go back to week view, and seeing the right week.
So it seems like in CG I have two nice, efficient ways to do that, whereas in BC, neither is efficient, and only one works.
but perhaps you can again show me a better way to do it in BC

I used to have a HTC T-Mobile Dash and the calendar on it was perfect for me. It would show your appointments on the home screen the day before and would stay there until the appoinment. I don't care about alarms, bells and whistles. I want to view a reminder on the home screen the day before.

very nice. i tried that and it's really slick. i was almost convinced to change from my beloved calengoo...but then i noticed some of my events weren't showing up. Seems to be a problem with repeating events that started further back than the past event sync window. Not BC's problem, as the stock calendar has the same problem. But still a problem.
Back to Calengoo, which does its own sync, as far back in the past as you want. Problem solved. And really no downside.
Most calendars use the internal android calendar database, and rely on android's synchronization with Google. So for example, Jorte is an interface to the android calendar database, when you make an appointment in Jorte, Jorte updates the phone's database, and then relies on the synchronization built-in to android to synchronize with Google. Jorte doesn't interface to Google directly.
So I would suggest first checking the account and synchronization settings in the OS. (From the home screen, menu key, settings, accounts) I don't actually know a reason why it wouldn't be working in both directions if it's working at all. But it would be an issue with the system, not with the particular calendar.
But if you can't figure that out, another option is to go with Calengoo. Unlike most calendars, it has the option to either use the phone's calendar database, and let the phone sync with Google, or you can turn that off, and set up Calengoo to keep its own database, and synchronize it directly with Google. I have found that working that way seems to be less buggy. Also, if you run into a bug with that you can contact the Calengoo developer for help, whereas otherwise you kind of get the runaround because different parties are responsible for different parts of it.

I am looking for a calendar that I can easily trade between day view and week view, syncs with my google calendar, and I can change the default appointment time to 45 minutes. I found what seemed to be the perfect calendar: Business Calendar. Only problem, it doesn't work on xoom. Any suggestions?
Calengoo can certainly do all you ask--not sure about whether it works on xoom though. I'd ask the developer: Introduction
I use Calengoo. For the longest time, I just used the stock calendar database to populate Calengoo; I thought I was saving memory by only using the one database. One way to fool Android into syncing back past the limitations of Android is to turn off your auto date function in settings and reset your date (eg 1999 in my case to go back more than 10 years). After you do a sync to get all of your historical events, you can turn the auto date back on. Recently, I ran into a google server problem which did not allow me to sync some of my calendars. Eventually google fixed it on their end. While I was trying to resolve it on my end, I enabled the Calengoo sync which automatically allows you to sync all of your historical events. I was very impressed with the sync speed. Normally, with an Android sync, it takes about 3 or 4 minutes everytime I do a normal sync. With Calengoo, it only takes about 20 seconds to do a normal sync. By normal sync, I mean after all of your historical events have been loaded up and when I add or delete an event in the normal course of a day and then do a sync. BTW, I have about 10 years and about 5000 events in my calendars.
Are there any decent calendar apps that sync with a Toodledo app, apart from Pocket Informant (sync issues with my phone, Samsung Galaxy S). At the moment, I know that Pure Calendar Widget is in talks with Ultimate To-Do List and Due Today (Customer Feedback & Ideas for Pure widgets / apps), two of the best Toodledo apps IMO, however I'm really NOT a fan of PCW - much prefer Android Agenda Widget over it.

- The look of the widgets in Android Agenda Widget and Pure Calendar Widget
- The thing in Jorte where you can autofill the event name or location details with previous event names or locations (good for physio appointments that you can't use a repeating event for, because they have no logical pattern)
- The smoothness of Android Agenda Widget (although the dev inadvertently caused and fixed a FCing bug recently)
Wonder if I should try Calengoo...

Looking for a calendar app (preferably free) that I can sync multiple calendars and easily swap back and forth between them.
first question: do you mean multiple calendars that you have within one Google account, or do you want multiple Google accounts?
I'm afraid neither of my recommendations are free, But here's what I know:
Business calendar is super easy to turn on and off different calendars within your Google account. You can toggle each on an off right from the home screen. I'm not sure about syncing multiple accounts.
With calengoo, it takes a few more taps to get into the menu where you turn them on and off, but the advantage is it is very configurable for multiple accounts, sync'd different ways, etc.
another option you might consider would be to use different calendar programs for different calendars. Have one calendar synced to the internal phone database, and set up calengoo to sync to whatever the other one you want is.
Any calendar can do that with multiple google accounts if you have eclair (android 2.1) or above.

Love Jorte, I've found it the easiest and problem free so far. Not as aesthetically pleasing as some of the others but if you go for a black theme on a dark background and play with the transparencies the widgets look pretty nice. Biggest seller for me was that it has the calender, events, an agenda, and a task/todo list all in one app
