Best / Favorite Apps for the Shift

The PearlyMon
No forum is complete without its very own best apps thread - so, I'll start, you folks add-on.

Remember - linking to places like AppBrain or the developer sites or even XDA is OK - but never link to direct downloads of apk files: that's harboring copyright infringement and we can have none of that.

If you manage a lot of contacts - or just want something way cool - Google Gesture Search, free in the Market. Gotta try it to believe it.

Astro File Manager - I especially like this because it's not only a handy file manager for letting you scoot around your SD card - it allows quick&easy backup / restore of your downloaded apps.

AndFTP - While Astro can network transfer files with your PC via wireless or Bluetooth, AndFTP is for ftp fans that have a server available on their PC that want those transfers to go maybe more than twice as fast. Not needed when you have a USB cable for drag&drop, but c'mon, who doesn't like a nice wireless xfer from the couch will watching the game or tear-jerker or whatever? (Both work great with Macs, too.)

We also have a whole subforum for discussing the ins and outs of apps in detail - Android Applications - Android Forums

Feel free to make your entries as long or as short as you please!

Hey, I found about this in the HTC Eris forum - works great on the Evo - Elixer, free in the Market.

(edit - they keep changing the screen shot, so you'll have to visit the page in the link below to see)

Elixir - Android app on AppBrain

That's a scrollable page, it shows a lot more. I've put mine as an app on my desktop, but it also includes a number of widget options. Make sure you use settings, applications to kill it when done, like other monitors, it'll continue to run otherwise.

While I'm in the neighborhood - best custom ringtone app I've found - Aru Ringtones - Android app on AppBrain also free in the Market

And for fun, there's an intelligent search-answer app, intelligent because humans provide the answers - ChaCha Droid - Android app on AppBrain

Just got the phone over the weekend. I am new to the droid and like it so far. I hear about this Dungeon Defender game, does anyone know if it will run on the shift?

Thanks
GT27

no, I have been reading a lot of reviews from people with the evo and they are saying it does not work well with the evo, so I wanted to check with all of you for any info.

THanks
GT27

Has anyone been able to get ShootMe to work on an un-rooted EVO Shift? I had no problems getting this to work on the Moment.

I'm downloading Dungeon Defender now. I'll post how it works on the shift.

Edit: ok downloaded and install the game, and it runs like a champ on the shift.

Anyone know a good video player for watching .avi files. I have a whole season of Modern Family in .avi format I would love to have on my phone to watch. Tried a few of the ones most downloaded in the market, but they don't work. =/

Aside from the addiction to Alchemy... seriously addictive lol. My current favorites are Springpad and google gesture (thanks EarlyMon). I'd like to find a good music player with EQ and can import my old itunes stuff. Any recommendions?

I downloaded Game Dev Story. That was a huge mistake. They should weaponize that thing... it's so addictive. If you have no pressing responsibilities for the next, oh, 500 or so hours... try it out...

I couldn't get into Game Dev Story. I may give it another shot later.

Alchemy on the other hand is like crack! Ever since I downloaded I have not stopped playing!

Pulse news app is great. Its kind of.like rss feeds but its much nicer looking. It gives u a bunch of news sources u could add to your list of news. I'm lovin this app.

Barcode Scanner - Allows you to scan barcodes and easily look up results online to compare prices.

dropbox - free app that you install on your phone and computer. They give you 2gb space free on their servers to store files or whatever you want. You can pay for more space if you want. You can then download/transfer those files to your phone or whatever computer you install dropbox. You can install it to as many PCs as you want. It makes file transferring to your phone easy without the need for the usb cable. You can also post links to the files if you want to allow other people to download a file from you. You can also share files between other dropbox users easily. It really is a great app. I used it before I even had a smartphone since it was nice to transfer files between my work PC and my home PC or if I had to get around the email attachment size limit if I needed to get a large file to someone over the net.

nesoid/snesoid/gameboid - Great emulators for playing your old school video games(ROMS). The Shift's hardware keyboard is a dream for these. A huge reason I wanted a physical keyboard.

Dolphin HD - My fav web browser. Has some nice upgrades from the stock browser. My favorites being easier access to bookmarks and a dedicated Home button.

My Tracks - A Google app that is nice if you like to go walking or hiking. It tracks your path and give stats and things like that.

Compass - Exactly what it sounds like. A simple compass app.

Tapatalk - A nice forum browser that makes participating in forums much easier on a phone. Doesn't work with this site but is still a great app. This is the only app I have actually purchased.

Speedtest.net - Great internet speed test app for showing off those 4G speeds to all your friends who own iPhones.

Those are my favorites.

Yes, they are doing server and site work at Phandroid - it should work excellently for the forums tho. If that's not happening, please let me know, I'll pass it upstairs and post a link where you can follow any issues on it.

Thanks for letting us know, feedback is mega-important to us!
