Root Best gingerbread rom?

Newbie
hey guys i've decided to root and experiment with roms on my desire. i'd like to try out the stock android experience and would like you all to chip in and say what rom do you like best and why? i'd like a rom as stock as possible (stock launcher, keyboard, etc), with the few obvious exceptions, like root. what do you all say?

Im currently using Oxygen 2.0.1 with Zeam launcher, very stable and fast, im hearing really good things about Gingervillain aswell, both vanilla Gingerbread roms. MIUI Gingerbread has just been released also, although not stock Android, will definitely be worth a look.

Are there any gingerbread roms with sense? (I'm new to all of this and haven't rooted yet)

hi there, there are no gingerbread ROMs with sense at the moment. but i would recomend you check out GingerVillain. I have been using it for a long time now ant its excellent!! it faster than HTC Sense and it is also really nice looking and still has nice features because it has CyanogenMod settings in it and things like Apps2SD+ as well :D give it a shot - its awesome :D

also i agree with nafpez - try out MIUI as that now has gingerbread. I personally don't like it and i like vanilla Android. But give that a go too as you may like it but my recomendation is GingerVillain because it works so well and it just seems perfect :)

There is a Gingerbread Sense rom (RCMix S), but don't expect much function from it. So far out of most roms I've checked out it's between CM7 and GingerVillain, I don't care for Oxygen anymore (no trackball wake and other features), CM7 gave me a handful of problems and so far GingerVillain (a port of CM7) seems stabler and just as good.

Another nice rom is RCMixHD 3.5 (A2SD-desensified), it has HTC components (like dialer, gallery, peep, etc) without the Sense launcher but it's still 2.2 which shouldn't be a big deal for most people.

I'm another satisfied user of GingerVillain ROM. It is stable, fast and has the CM settings for extra tweaks. Also it is updated very frequently.
Another ROM I liked was ReDux. It was clean, simple and fast.

I don't like MIUI style ROMs, but that is more personal and subjective.
Oxygen is similar to Gingervillain, but lacks CM settings. In addition, it has not been updated for a while.

Bottom line, I like GB ROMs and I'm not going back to a Froyo ROM.

If it's not clear already, the main two are really GingerVillain and Oxygen. I've used both and really like them, and they are both very similar.

Just done the same as op, gingervillain caused my phone to heat up excessively, so tried oxygen and love the vanilla experience and I got loadsa memory to play with 2

MIUI gingerbread isnt stable at the moment. It has few issues with mobile connection and battery drain so I'd wait a lil while before trying it but it looks promising. In terms of stock roms, I agree with most posters on here gingervillian and oxygen are stable and added bonus of being on gingerbread. If you dont mind staying on froyo rom Id also recommend baadnewz insertcoinHD port 2.0 it looks very impressive!

Tried both Oxygen and Gingervillain. Both excellent roms. Running Gingervillain at the moment. I found both an improvement over the stock rom.

I got a question, I currently have LeeDroid with A2SD+, can I flash GingerVillain while retaining my A2SD+? Or do I have to partition a different one (Darktremor A2SD+)?

Dont understand the question.

a2sd comprises of 2 things to function.

1) an a2sd script in the rom (system/etc/init.d) either supplied with the rom or flashed after

2) an ext partition

The partition will always remain unless you remnove it in a partition management application, so then all that is needed is teh scriot in the rom.

You will have to wipe going from LD to GV, but when you install apps, yes they will utilise a2sd.

thanks guys gonna check out both of those. i'll write back with what i think of them. BTW, know any of them that doesn't have the stock camera interface? I heard it sucks...

I just thought there's 2 different A2SD+ because Darktremor A2SD+ is new to me (haven't flashed a rom since December). Thank you for clarifying. Will try GingerVillain and see how it is.

standard camera interface isnt as "shiny" as HTC's but it does exactly the same job just as well.

Yes theres 2 main ones; Dark Tremor and Firerat.

There are probably loads of custom made ones by other people too, since its a script of commands.

What I'd like to see is the experience between ASOP ROMs based on a2sd+, data2ext and hboot tables. Speed? Space?

Ive used data2sd (but not for a while - apparently its better now) but I found it slower with my SD card than a2sd+

Haven't used Hboot tables. Just custom MTD layout, and only in conjunction with a2sd+

I see that Gingervillain gets updated very frequently. Does that imply a bit of instability, whereby it needs constant fixing (and therefore it might be worth waiting until it stabilizes)? And do you have to reflash every new update, or can you upgrade without wiping your phone?
