Look into Invisiblek's #21 kernel as it underclocks the device when the screen is off. I can generally get 2 days out of one charge with moderate use.

You need an AOSP (built from source) ROM.

MIUI, Cyanogen, and Ultimate Droid are all solid AOSP ROMs. I prefer Cyanogen to the others. Check here: [KERNEL][AOSP] 2.6.32.26-invisiblek #21 - xda-developers for compatibility details.

I am running Cyanogen and it seems solid. Just installed the #21 rom, so not sure how that will work. Cyanogen always seems fast, and no clutter. Give it a try!!

Is there any kernels that don't need a custom rom? I like the htc sense look but want better battery.

+1 his #9 kernel was on my phone for quite some time and I could get outstanding battery life and I never had to sacrifice speed on my phone

This is a question that can never really be answered, IMO. A kernel will act differently on every single phone. Just because I swear up and down that Lou's #9 is the best kernel for sense ROMs doesn't mean it will perform good for you. Everyone kept saying Lou's#8 was great when it came out, so I flashed it, after boot my phone became very glitchy and unusable so I had to restore my backup. I'd take the suggestions people have given, make a backup and start flashing and testing until you find one you're happy with

+1 for Lou's Kernels for Sense-Based ROMs. I recommend #9, but if you have issues, #4 is probably the most stable with similar battery life but a few less features.
I've had good luck with lou's kernels and chad's (incredikernel). make a nandroid and try them all. Actually I ran Ziggy's bfs for a while and it was a beast on benchmarks smooth and battery life didnt suffer....so see what works. I tend to stick with the better battery kernels so on lous #8 right now....that could change anytime.

I've been running cm 7 with the latest incredikernel and it had pretty good battery life but, I just flashed redemtion 2.4 with Lou's #9. So I'll compareand get back to you in a few days. Oh I should say that I really liked sense too but, I would say at least give a few a try. I always seem to go back to cm 7. It's clean and stable for me at least.
