Best keyboard app?

How about "Better Keyboard"?

Why not try some yourself too? Whatever you purchase from the Android Market you have a full 24 hours to get a refund so if you like it you can keep it and if not you can get a refund :)
 
I prefer TouchPal over Better Keyboard, no skins for it but I like it how it is and its free. Just be sure you get the correct language pack for it.

Thanks for reminding me to download it too, I had tried using the HTC_IME.apk (Hero keyboard) but its the wrong resolution and looks to pixely.

How do I find TouchPal? I tried looking in the Market and didn't see it. Went to the website but there's no download for the droid.. just WM.
 
I purchased the app and was happy for a few days.. but my keyboard started to freeze and wouldn't pull up intermittently and just got fed up of those issues.. but I still have the prog in my phone in case they do a software update on it hopefully. Currently I'm using the android keyboard until then.
 
A day ago, I would have said "Betterkeyboard" but I think I've discovered a bug in it.. when I use it to type replies on message boards, it gets dismissed after a few sentences and takes a long time to come back up, leading me to think that it is crashing and having to restart.

After it crashes, letters you type no longer show up in the text box on the forum, but they are still being entered. Swapping to the default android keyboard fixes the issue and allows the letters you type to be displayed again.

For now, I'm going to stay with the default android keyboard. I e-mailed the developer of betterkeyboard about this.. hopefully it can be reproduced and fixed.

edit: Got a response from the developer (yay for prompt responses)

They say that the keyboard doesn't crash.. and that is the browser that crashed in this case and that the firmware on the droid is very buggy (doesn't surprise me.. it is the first 2.0 device afterall).. maybe I'll try to capture some logs and see if it really was the browser that crashed.. assuming I can replicate the issue again. I don't think I can recall an instance where the browser "crashed" on a phone without exiting.. but then again I'm new to Android, so I suppose there is a first time for everything.
 
So. As I write this review I will be judging the keyboard I am promoting as well.
I want to put in my opinion for Smartkeyboard. I jumped from the motorola krzr to the droid and one of my biggest issues has been adjusting to the touch screen keyboard. I've tried swype, shapewriter, better keyboard, crocodile keyboard, evenbetter keyboard, handcent keyboard, talktome keyboard, and obviously the default. Out of all of those, most were very lackluster. The only ones worth mention are talk to me keyboard for its comprehensive voice to text, better keyboard for all of its skins and functional t9 kb, shapewriter for its ability to be used fluently with one hand, and lastly smartkeyboard, which I am using my trial time since this morning all day and now am writing this with it. Better keyboard took a shot at multi touch, but ultimately what they ended up with was not multitouch. Smartkeyboard has good, proper multi touch and a lot of customizable features. The only thing I want now is a way to automatically switch keyboards between portait and landscape modes so I can use shapewriter in portrait with one hand and smartkeyboard for long messages like this. And I would say this keyboard handled itself very well through this long message. I even went back to test speed against default keyboard which naturally should be fastest and did one sentance with better keyboard which operated at the same speed as the other 2. Until I went back and wrote the same sentance without skins where it was slower and closed the keyboard mid sentance (happens sometimes).
anyway, there's my opinion. If nothing else id say try them all out. If they don't have a trial versin you always have twenty four hours to refund :) have fun all!
 
After using Swype, I can't even imagine typing again. Very intuitive, almost mistake proof even if your finger wander all over the keyboard looking for the right key.

That said, I've never tried any of the other keyboards
 
Honestly, I thought that swype was inferior to shapewriter keyboard. Shapewriter is just as fast and:
1: has easier word adding to user dictionary
2: selecting alternative words that are misspelled is easier, also one press of back space button erases the whole word.
3: long hold specific keys adds symbols.
Overall after using both extensively I much prefer shapewriter. Before you preach for swype try them both :)

Tried them both. Swype is better.
 
I tried Swype and I really like it. I'm still getting used to it, but for the most part, I like it better than the stock virtual keyboard.

I've tried this; with all the force closes and freezes, I find the stock software kb to be much more superior. Sticking with stock!
 
Hey guys, question. I've been trying to find a keyboard, and none of them are perfect. I've tried better keyboard, ultra keyboard, the HTC modded keyboard, Slideit and so on, and I still hit some keys when I don't need to because the space bar is either too small or too centered. Is there a keyboard that either has a larger spacebar, or maybe one with the spacebar a little to the right?

It's not on the market yet, but if you can find it I also throw a recommendation with Swype, I use it with the Droid 2 theme on it. I actually prefer it now over even the physical keyboard - slight learning curve but once you get it its nice
 
I've been using Smartkeyboard. Works well. Can enter numbers without leaving the letter screen (on virtual keyboard). Also autocomplete/suggestions works with physical keyboard.
