Help Best method for switching between open apps?

I am an android newbie and struggling to work out the best way to switch between apps without having to use home button and then select new app every time. I am sure there must be a drop down app to assist with this.

There are some apps that can help too like Power Strip (more functionality than long press home button).

Looks like its all about the "long press" on these phones.
Early days but I am loving it.
