Root best method to block ota update notifications for optimus elite

Was curious if it would be safe to edit or delete all files associated with how the elite gets the notifications. i manually installed the update before getting the ota which i haven't gotten yet and really dont want to get. already knowing it isnt an update i want (anything less than a true android update isn't worth the trouble in my opinion). so any suggestions on how to just eliminate this issue altogether? as i dont see lg or virgin mobile upgrading us to ics,so why even deal with the nag prompts to update. from other users posts, the update notification nags you at intervals until you update. i dont recall any stating they could make the prompt go away without updating. id like to avoid this if possible.

My phone rejected the update probably because i deleted some system apps and never restored them. It hasn't bugged me about the update again.

This was my experience as well. I have even left the update zip in /cache/ and I still haven't received another notification. I'd say make sure you have removed all the bloatware then try to update, which should fail, in order to stop the notification.

I can't even get my phone to tell me an update is available. I haven't gotten a text, and even if I go into the setting and click on he update software button, it says thar I have the most up to date one. Which I don't, I'm at ZV4.

same here. but i think the update is being pushed by region. not sure about that though. just dont want a notification nag i can't get rid of if it does come my way. i may do the install and let it fail. maybe that will end nag prompts after attempt.

I cussed out VM about the nagging update notification every 5 minutes, of course it didn't help. I have had no luck rooting so I can't even delete it. I'm so pissed I'm considering trashing the phone and go somewhere else. If I own the phone I should not have to have it junked up with their bull crap. They should leave the phone where we don't have to do rooting. Just saying.

i couldnt agree more. not saying that other carriers do not add crap to their updates. but virgin mobile does nothing on the update front except spam their damn company crap. really, who gives two shits about virgin mobile live?? these guys do not see an OS update as useful to you. they see you buying their garbage as useful to them. im thinking of editing the ota files on my elite (making a few backups) by hex editing in changes to any urls, etc that the device receives the files from. and only change them back if a noteable update does come along. which i doubt will happen.

Have you tried all of the rooting methods? What was the problem with them? Between all of us here we should be able to get you rooted :)

yeah you can get still get rooted after update. or reroot after. one is the tot file to revert back and the other is the one click method i think. dont quote me on that though.

Yeah, they both work. And so does giantpunes method.

All that waiting for the update and you're sure you dont want to just accept it, even if it's just for the updated radio? :D

FWIW, those who do not want the ota update spam message can delete the zip file in the cache directory.

OE - Unrooted.
Got the download don't want to install it. I thought it was an update to make the phone work better, apparently not. I don't use apps like those anyway.

Where is the cache directory located?
I hook up phone to laptop > mass storage....
Two drives appear. E and F (both relate to the phone)
Unable to locate the cache directory in any of the folders.
Am I way off here?
Thx

Those two drives are your internal SD card, and your external SD card, respectively. The /cache directory is located within the operating system files of your phone. It's the difference between having a flash/thumb/usb drive, and your userspace, versus being able to access the operating system files like an Administrator, for a computer. If that makes sense. You will more than likely need to be rooted to find /cache and delete the zip to end the life cycle of the spam notification. To do that, you can use a file manager like ES File Explorer or Root Explorer.

Additionally, for clarification, I just went ahead and did what I posted earlier in this thread and that was indeed the case if anyone wasn't clear on it. Go into /cache and delete that zip, and you're golden. Thank you Whisper!

Put the recovery.img on internal sdcard. This should be a backup of stock recovery.

In terminal type the following 2 commands...

su

cat /sdcard/recovery.img > /dev/block/mmcblk0p14

How do you get into recovery?
thx

With phone powered off hold either volume up or down button. While holding the vol button press and the power button. Once you see lg logo release power but continue holding vol button and you will be taken into recovey

While in recovery volume keys scroll up and down and menu button selects

I only have 3 scrollable items in blue txt....none of which are the zip file.
The Zip file in yellow txt is below a hard line, I can't get to it.
How do I get to it, and what is the command for delete?
Sorry I am not expert at this at all ! somewhat nervous :(
thx
z

The blue items are part of the menu of recovery. items that you can actually scroll and select...

Items in yellow are informational only and can't be scrolled or selected.

If you aren't seeing the update then it may not be on correct sd card. Name it update.zip and copy it to the internal sdcard not the external one.

Once you get to recovery go to "Apply update from sdcard" and then in next menu select the update.zip file

Well looks like it's back to zv4 again. I reinstalled update last night to give it another chance and I bet I've restarted 6 or 7 times today for data cutting out
