Root Best ROM right now

For an AOSP rom, I like cm7 because it's very stable and has a lot of options that give a lot functionality and convenience. But I would agree that it hasn't given me very good battery life. For some strange reason, for my phone, cm7 isn't as fast as other Gingerbread roms. For my taste, I'm willing to give up some features for speed.

Back then when I used sense roms, skyraider was my favorite.

Once I went AOSP, I didn't go back.

In order for the new ROM to function properly, you need to wipe. Always backup after you get it the way you want it, then you can just switch between the ROMs.

The problem is that I don't want to wipe my phone and lose my apps, pics etc. I am rooted but the last update with slacker and the other Verizon crap won't download though and the update reminder is a pain in the ass. Is there a way to unroot without wiping?

I just read the part where you want to unroot. Sorry. I don't think you can unroot without wiping. If you want to read what I wrote below, I'll leave it in as it is still valid, but doesn't answer your question of unrooting. If you haven't installed a ROM and you are still running stock, maybe you can unroot without wiping, but I haven't tried anything like that. Once I rooted, I'll never return to stock. My warranty is up and there's no reason for me to ever return the phone to stock.

Now, Why you have to wipe before installing a new ROM:
Have you ever installed a new copy of Windows on top of an old copy. IE: Windows 95 was running and you went up to Windows 98 just as an upgrade and Windows 98 just didn't run properly. (I know, I'm dating myself.) Well, Microsoft realized that you can't just upgrade, that you have to wipe before installing a new operating system, so now you have to wipe the hard drive clean and start over if you go from Windows Vista to Windows 7. It's the same thing with the Android Phones. You can try to swap out without wiping the hard drive clean, but you will have problems because basically you still have two operating systems on the phone. One ROM places items in "this" folder and the new ROM wants those items place in a different folder, so now you've got issues. Everything is placed in different locations.

If you have a ROM that you like and have it setup but want to add an update or a new Kernel, then no, you don't wipe. But that's not the case with changing ROMs. You have to wipe when switching between two different ROMs. Sorry, but that's how things go.

Also, if you run everything off your SD card, then so long as you don't wipe the SD card, you sill still get your pictures and stuff back. You'll have to reinstall all of your apps from the market, though.

I found this about un-rooting:

How to correctly unroot the Incredible - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum

As for everything else thanks! I am not sure what the hell I am going to do I just want to get rid of the damn reminder telling me to install the latest update but it wont let me.

Another vote for Incredibly Re-engineered. I think it's going to be my new daily driver ROM, after Virtuous. Have also tried Redemption and Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo, but both had annoying glitches on my phone (although I adore the theming on Myn's Warm!)

Sounds like I ought to give CM a try, though...

This might be the biggest newbie question ever but can someone explain these to me?

Sense
Senseless
Vanilla
AOSP

Sorry, but I am new to the whole root thing...

Sense - typically refers to the interface that HTC uses, but it's really the framework of the OS used on HTC's devices. A Sense ROM is based on a Sense framework. Popular Sense ROMs for the Incredible use the Incredible's framework, the Evo's, or the Desire Z's. There are others, but those are the most popular.

Senseless - Senseless is just a Sense-based ROM stripped of the Sense UI, to give it a vanilla appearance. This gives you the stability of a Sense-ROM, but the customization of an AOSP ROM.

Vanilla - the interface of stock Android.

AOSP - Android Open Source Project, which is stock Android before it's compiled. An AOSP ROM is when someone takes the Android source and compiles it for your device. AOSP lacks the stability of Sense in most cases, but also offers generally more performance.

I've tried Virtuous, Myn's, Reengineered, MUIU, CM6, Ruby, CM7, Redemption, FrankenROM, just about every ROM that had a decent review. All of them were decent, at least at first, but then little glitches would creep in. FCs, bluetooth acting strange, nav problems, random reboots. Thank goodness for Nandroid!
Then a couple of weeks ago I discovered Magnolia. Head and shoulders above all the rest. Fast, stable, looks great, lots of options, and the developer is committed to quality. This is the one to get, folks.

+1 to the above. Incredible Re-Engineered is very attractive, but has a "known issue" of being unable to send MMS over wifi (so if you are in poor reception area, you're SOL if you need to sent a text). MUIU is like turning your Incredible into an iphone (ugh). I know Ruby and CM have issues either with the camera or other functions. Can't comment on Redemption or FrankenROM. And, of course, YMMV -- it's a very personal choice (that's what's great about flashing ROM's).

Magnolia 1.2 is very smooth; no issues or limitations whatsoever; phone works faster than stock; can use other kernels; easily mod, and Steve is a very responsive developer. See the ROM thread over on xda-developers.

Not true for me. Incredible Re-Engineered sends MMS with no problems for me. I tried the Magnolia 1.2 ROM today and the Web wouldn't work, nor would my email. (Yes, I wiped all data.) Since I have to have my phone for work, I quickly went back to my Backup of Incredible Re-Engineered. Looks like I'll be sticking with Re-Engineered. MIUI was neet, but you're right, who wants an iDroid. Redemption worked well for me with no problems, but I love the way Incredible Re-Engineered looks and feels. I'll be staying with it.

Interesting about the MMS. You sent MMS over wifi? I though the first post on Chingy's Incredible Re-Engineered thread at xda-developers said that was still an issue even after this week's update. Hmmm. That was why I went with Magnolia before I.R. I suspect I'll give I.R. a ride at some point.

Also curious that you lost web and email after flashing Magnolia. Nobody has reported that over in the ROM's xda-developer's thread.

MMS works fine for most, but it's MMS over wifi that's the problem. That problem is specific to all Evo ROMs on the Incredible. When wifi is turned on, 3G is automatically turned off. Due to this, actions that require 3G/4G (My Verizon, MMS on a ported Evo ROM) won't function when wifi is enabled.
