Best SMS messaging app?

really, ill take a look at that too..+1 rep for you my friend

Much appreciated.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Better Keyboard does cost $3 and some change. If you like it, though, you can always just get a refund as long as it is within 24 hours of the purchase. It is way worth the money in my opinion.

yea i saw the cost.. grrrrr

It does suck having to pay for apps, but some of the best ones are paid. The only way to get around paying for apps is to root your phone. I haven't taken that plunge yet. Hopefully one day we can purchase apps, and just have them billed to our cell phone accounts.

yea it does suck.. lmao.

hey i have a question about hancent.. i installed it and engaged in my first text convo with it. However every time i received a text from the person the dam pop up window would come up, anyway to set it so that the pop only comes up when the ap is closed. it is hella annoying

I think setting it so popup only comes on when keygaurd is engaged did the trick for me. It is in the settings somewhere under popups.

I like the stock one way better than Handcent. The only plus of Handcent is that it allows to send sounds/ringtones which I use.
Can you send ring tones/sounds and a picture at the same time? I have not been able to.. The only time I miss a non smart phone.:D

Ok hi I just downloaded and installed Handcent but I don't know how to make it my default sms programs?

Only way i have seen so far is to click on the original messaging shortcut that came with the phone, click on a txt message and a prompt will appear asking which app you want to view the message with. There is a checkbox below to make it the default. Not sure how to change it yet... (i'm still deciding over chompSMS, Handcent Sms, and Messaging) Leaning towards Handcent right now tho...

If I install Handcent (or any other SMS app), do I retain any existing SMS messages? Likewise, if I uninstall it and go back to the default app, are messages received in Handcent retained?

You mean set notification preferences by contact? It definitely does work on Handcent...unfortunately they made it kind of a pain to access config settings on a per contact aspect.

Can someone point me in the right direction to find this feature. Just switched over to Handcent, and loving it so far but really would like to set per contact notifications. (more importantly shut off notifications from certain contacts)

You can do this if you click on the settings button in the top right once you open the conversation from that person. You should get a screen pop up asking to change the notification, bubble and signature settings.

can anyone tell me if there is a delivery report funtion on chomp? i was using handsent but sometimes when i got a message it wouldnt show up in my inbox? shame because it was perfect.

any ideas? (or alternatives?

I dumped Handcent for SMS Popup << the only one which relates to Google Voice. Now when I see an incoming SMS popup, tapping the Reply (to phone number) button auto-dumps me into GV's SMS compose screen. Thing just works, without the hassles of lags, etc.

(FYI GV Folks: you'll need to configure the buttons. Just be sure to select reply to phone number as one of your buttons. First time a txt comes in, you'll get a dialog box asking you to choose a default between the stock app and GV. Thereafter, the described auto-dump-to-GV will always transpire.)

Hey guys, I was wondering.... is swype available for the hero? I visited the swype site however it's a closed beta right now.... any other way of getting it?

when i launched the sms icon it asked me which one i wanted to use.i checked use as default then selected handcent.

I am trying to launch handcent throught he message icon and it had prompted me to do that, but I never checked anything. I have tried uninstalling but can't seem to get that box to pop up again asking me me to choose the default. I tried clearing handcent and everything but still no luck.

Am i missing something.

Anyone use SMS Popup? I really love it because the message would pop up on my screen like when I had Iphone. Before, I was constantly missing messages when I had it on vibrate which was really annoying.

The only problem is the message pops up in SMS on my screen, as well as when I am in the message with the stock app, which is extremely irritating. Anyone know how to "disable" the pop up feature (I know this seems counter productive) while you are in the process of messaging? I only want it to do the pop up thing to alert me when I have a msg and the phone is inactive/resting

I use chompSMS Beta as well, and the colors are nice lol, just iPhone-esque. It's not yet ready for the Droid, but it's almost there. Main reason for why I use it is because it allows the enter key to be used as a SEND button. If Handcent used that, then maybe I'd go back to them. Other than that I give props to Handcent for giving an option to split up and send multiple texts for messages that go over 160 characters, which I do often.

You can use enter to send on the keypad on handcent. I think maybe a few others as well. It is in the system preferences on handcent home page.

Ugh, I HATED the UI of Handcent at first, but I customized it all, now I love it. I switched from the awful (IMO) bubbles to the android style conversations, and then re-did the colors because that aqua just wasn't cutting it. I made all the text black.

I like SMS Pop Up, but hated that it didn't clear the # on the messages icon if you replied via quick reply.

SMS popup does this if you let it handle your notifications. I used to have Handcent but the latest version grayed out the "LED settings" so i could control them anymore so a green flashing light would constantly be blinking annoying me and wasting my battery.

SMS popup + Stock app is the best...I only used Handcent for the popup feature. it used too much memory to really outweight the nice customization features

If the LED is a problem, it can be disabled under the main settings for the phone under "display". I tried to use the stock SMS app but couldn't tolerate the lack of features of the stock app. I disable the pop up feature of Handcent because I find it annoying. I would rather not have a pop up interrupting my train of thought. Handcent hasn't slowed my phone down one bit. It has functioned great with OS 1.5, 2.1, 2.2.
