Root Best Way to Backup Apps and Data Before Rooting?

Schlaegel

Newbie
My understanding is that using the current rooting method dumps all apps, preferences, data, etc. I want to back all of this up, so that I'm not starting over once I get root.

I tested the LG Backup stock app, but on the restore test, the restored app refused to run and said that it needed to be reinstalled. My test app was from the Amazon app store, so perhaps LG Backup works better with the Google Play app store, or perhaps it just doesn't work reliably.

What do you recommend?

Try helium from app store..as I recall you need to sync with a PC but it is the best non root backup I've found...been a little while since I used though

The problem here, ironically, is that you aren't rooted, so your backup options are rather limited. About the best you can do is copy all data from your internal storage to your computer, and export your contacts to your SD card.
I would suggest this even if you use Helium, as a backup for your backup.

You can use the stock backup app? It seems to do what it needs to do to back up apps. And their data.

I just used this the other day for the first time. I normally use titanium for my backups (but the first thing I do to my phones is root them). However, I found that going from stock zv3 to the deoxed zv5 found here - I couldn't get my text messages transferred correctly (not sure of the problem) but my work around was to use the LG Backup app...wow...most impressed with something that came from a stock rom! Now - trying to go from stock to another rom (hopefully in the future)...this might not be an option.

But for now, I'd use that (LG Backup) app.

its what i have been using to back up my stuff.
im quite content with it.
i am going from zv4 to zv5 in a bit. so we will see how good it is at keeping everything i need.

I rooted my phone, but none of my backups from before rooting restored the App data. I had backups from Helium and LG Backup. I wonder if it was a result of most of my Apps being moved to the "SD" drive, even though Kit Kat really just moved them to another partition on the internal flash.
It was very frustrating to find that the backups didn't really restore the data. If anyone finds a way to backup before rooting, and then restore after rooting, it would be good to add it to the rooting guide. As it currently stands, rooting loses all data on your phone.
I wonder if I had moved my Apps back off of the fake "SD" card, and then backed up the Apps, that the backups would have actually contained the data.
