Better batt life on 4g than 3g?

Has to be signal strength related. You have a strong 4G signal, but extremely marginal 3G signal most likely. Only explanation I can think of.

Unless you have horrific 3G reception where the signal goes in and out, that should not be the case. 4G uses substantially more power than 3G.

LTE uses more power for a shorter period of time
3G uses less power but for a longer period of time

i could completely see this happening.

Bingo.

If your 3G signal is weak and its constantly searching for signal, then your 4G ill give you better battery life. I have better battery life on 4G at work because I have a stronger signal.

I've noticed this as well (in some cases). It has a lot to do with what I'm doing on the phone though. And the fact that it seems 4G seems to have much better signal consistency than 3G locally.

Really getting irritated with this thing, sitting at work for 7 hours, wifi on, only 20 min screen on time, down to 56%. grrrrrrrr.

You need to figure out what is draining your battery. Its likely a service syncing in the background or an app pulling background data. Google+, Facebook, and photo sync are known to be big background data hogs.

Yeah something is not right at all. I can leave my phone off the charger for 7 hours on Wifi at home (overnight) and wake up down 2-3% total.

Something is going on in the background of your phone.

Does that make any sense? I have the lte gnex, and notice noticeably worse batt life on 3g. Thoughts?

In my experience, the screen is harder on the battery than either one. I've noticed a pretty equal amount of battery drain between surfing 3G and surfing 4G.
