Root Big Difference in Data Speeds

Ok so first of all I want to say that I guess I might have been lucky but I havent really had any of the issues that have plauged many of my fellow Triumph owners. The only thing that really concerned me is my data speed. After a few days of research and some trial and error I have done two things that as of now I can say have boosted my data speeds enough to want to share.

The first thing I did was update my PRL as per this thread here . Now if you read through there is some debate as to whether or not this does anything at all. I and plenty of others can say it has. I am using Sprint PRL 01120 to 11114 changes - 07/17/2011, which seems to be the newest one.

The other thing I did was add this line to my prop.build file:
ro.product.rat=EvDo only

Now I tried my data several times with and without that line and when I removed it my data would drop down to about 80-120kb DL which is what I would normally get before applying any of this. Now with this Im getting between 600-900kb DL.

I tried my best to so my test in the same extract spot as close together as possible.
Im not here to argue and I don't think this is magic. I just wanted to share something that might work for someone else. Try it at your own risk.

Here is a link to the stock PRL incase anyone wants to switch back http://www.mediafire.com/?5lvyu57irj9w0db

HERE IS A QUICK STEP BY STEP IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GO THROUGH ALL THE STUFF ON THE OTHER FORUM:

REQUIRED TOOLS/SOFTWARE:

Motorola Triumph USB cable- Others may work but this cable was designed for use with the phone, use it if possible.
Stock Phone Driver- Found on the phone when connected via USB. This driver should be installed before attempting any modifications.
QPST 2.7 Build 366- This is what I use, other versions may work as well.
Sprint PRL 01115- This is the latest version of the Sprint PRL and includes the most recently added towers. Using another carriers PRL might eventually allow the Triumph to be used on another carrier if you can get the ESN added to that carriers database, but that's another issue that I'll leave for someone else to test down the road. Just use the Sprint PRL.
MotoConnect- Not technically required but makes the detection process easier due to notification windows.
NOTE: Phone does not need to be rooted to complete this guide.

HOW TO SWAP YOUR PRL:

First things first, make sure you have the required software and drivers installed and that they appear to be working correctly.

Now its time to get your MSL. Thanks goes to mmarz over at XDA for originally discovering this method.

1. Log into your Virgin Mobile account.
2. Click this link.
3. Although you get a 404 error page, search the page for "msl:"
4. The six numbers after msl: are your MSL code. Write them down.

Now that you have your MSL I suggest you put it into a notepad document and save it.

The next step is to identify what COM ports your particular computer uses to connect with the Triumph. Open your device manager on your computer and expand the

do you add that line to the prop.build file anywhere specific?

EDIT: Nevermind I got it to save once in used ES File Explorer. I hope this helps with my Pandora streaming problem.

Can you make a flashable zip so we can just flash it to the phone? (build.prop) Or tell us step by step how to edit it?

OMG...thank you so much! I had horrible web browsing speeds on my phone. It was so bad that I actually didn't even use the 3g. If i had to download an app I would use wifi. Thank you so much for making my phone better useful for web browsing and downloads.

Can you make and receive phone calls?

Use Root Explorer and open your build.prop in text editor. I just added the line to the end of the file save and reboot.

OH AND YES I CAN MAKE AND RECEIVE CALLS and send TEXTS. I HAVE BETTER SIGNAL AND IM LOCKED INTO A CLOSER TOWER THAN I WAS BEFORE.

Thanks for sharing, can anyone else corroborate?

I've returned my two Triumphs for connectivity issues, and would consider re-purchasing if the PRL/EVDO really make that big a difference

I had already swapped my PRL from before (not a huge difference) but I tried it out the EvDo thing and while there seems to be a little boost using Speed Test app I couldn't really tell a difference when using the phone. I still have problems when streaming audio over 3G with Pandora and MLB at Bat. I was hoping it would have solved that but it still cuts out a lot.

I tested the EvDo line with youtube and a speed test. I was never able to stream a video on youtube stock. After I swapped PRL and added the line I was able to run through a whole Video for the first time. Removed the line again wasnt able to stream the same video. Added the line again, streamed all the way through. I dunno worked for me. I drove around today and tested my speed every chance I got and while it was definitely slower than it was last night it was still significantly faster than it was stock.

Does the build.prop edit do anything on it's own or does it rely that PRL?

I was wondering the same thing but it was working so well that I didnt want to mess anything up and flash the stock PRL again so Im not sure. Maybe someone can change the Prop file before changing the PRL and then test with the new PRL and see if there is a difference.

As a matter of fact that's what I did minus adding the new PRL anyway. First speed test before making the change got 615kbps dl speed after adding the line I got 515kbps, both run @ about 4:15pm my time ... ran one more test as was typing this and got 80kbps @ 5:37pm my time.

I really ought to run more tests to find out more but I'm itching to get that PRL in here and then give it a go... I haven't the slightest clue how to use ADB but If it get this figured out I'll try and run test tomorrow at the same times I ran them today.

Dude use the step by step I posted. No need for ADB. Just get all the software mentioned and install the app on your phone. Takes a few minutes.

Well it's gonna have to wait at least for a little while... I just spent the last 30 minutes trying to log into my Virgin mobile account so I could obtain my MSL code but I could NOT log in... Though I forgot my vKey so I called in and sure enough I had it right to begin with so the issue is with their site and until it passes I cannot finish getting this PRL flashed... :(

Edit: Got it flashed ran a speed test and got a whopping 64kbps Download speeds the first try and 259 the second try This was done with 01115... I'm going to try it with the 1120 PRL and see where that gets me

Scratch that Found a bad version of 1120 so I tried 1119 and got 248kbps first try.

im using 01120 and just the the evdo mod. While i'm not 100% sure, the data throughput seems to be better, i went from 250-200kbps multi tests to about 550kbps after, so ill keep testing and see.

Changed the prl earlier this afternoon and then the build.prop file a short time ago. Speedtests confirm nothing has changed, but this is not conclusive until I've done further testing.....

*as a side note, initial testing was done in my house where my signal isn't decent*

honestly forget the speed test. Do your ouwn test stream video or music to see if you notice any breaks. I dunno if you guys have notice but speed test lie. Or they tell me what I could be getting rather what I am getting. My home ineternet on speed test says I get 20mb but when i download with my accelerator I only get high 3's or low 4's mb. Its still fast as hell, but not what the speed test is showing me.

Ok so how the heck do you do this in Linux? Haven't had a windows pc in the house since 2004. I run Debian sid on my ancient IBM Thinkpad R40.

downloaded 01115 prl
downloaded QPST 2.7 366 (which is a windows/dos app) opens OK in wine but crashes when you try to get it to do anything.

Ran the speed test this afternoon in the parking lot (better signal than at home) and pulled in an impressive 986kbps download speeds

I'm using 1120 prl
