big problem after rooting

My primary issue is being unable to mount /system RW, but i think the problem is bigger than that. Here is what happened.

I started with Android 4.0.4. I used Odin to put CWM recovery on my phone, and immediately made a nandroid backup. I then installed superuser through CWM. Rebooted. Root worked fine. I installed titanium backup, and was able to use root explorer to rename files in /system (just done sound files).

I decided to try CM 10. Installed it through CWM, got a boot loop. Apparently it didn't like the external sd, but i don't know. I had to use another recovery program (starts with a T, don't remember the name, it was touch screen). Got CM installed, didn't like it, decided to revert to my nandroid backup. So I reinstalled CWM through odin, wiped/factory reset, recovered from my backup.

Now, things seem weird. The phone seems to boot slower. "power off" leaves me at the goodbye screen unless i hold the power button, which sometimes makes it restart again. I cannot mount/system as rw, even though i appear to be rooted still. I have searched and tried many different things, but i feel overwhelmed with the possibilities.

The main thing i want is to be able to mount /system RW, like i could when i first rooted.

Hi jd :hello: Welcome to the forums. I moved your thread to the All Things Root forum. :)

You say:

At a later point you restored your nandroid. If you made the nandroid before you used superuser, then your nandroid isn't rooted. Do the apps that need root still work? You may need to flash superuser again.

There are several things you can try (if you're rooted). Download Darkside Super Wipe and Cache Wipe. Flash Cache Wipe in recovery and see if that helps. Cache Wipe will also fix the problem with it hanging at the Goodbye screen.

You could always use Odin and install 4.0.4 again. I would also stick with the TWRP recovery. If you decide to use it, you will need to make another nandroid with it.

This is where I am confused. After I recovered, superuser was still installed. I am assuming that "rooted" means superuser is installed. I kinda feel like it's installed, but something is wrong. Like it's there, but I'm not rooted. I even tried removing it, but most procedures I read stay by saying to delete superuser, but i can't r/w in system.

I will try some of those suggestions when i get home. Thanks!

You can still have superuser show up in your apps but not be rooted. Try Titanium Backup. If it doesn't work just flash superuser again.

I have reflashed superuser but this was happening before I tried that. My phone is rooted, but it won't give me rw access to system. I have tried probably half a dozen apps to test it, and none can get rw access to system, including root explorer.

My phone feels a lot slower in general. Swyping has a split second delay. Chrome browser scrolls slow and gives a black screen that takes a second to catch up.

Ok, I'm not sure what the problem is. I don't really understand how you're still rooted if you did a nandroid before rooting and then restored that nandroid.

Try flashing Darkside Cache Wipe. That may fix it. If it doesn't, try flashing Darkside Super Wipe, that will be like doing a factory reset. Then stay in recovery and restore your nandroid, then flash Cache wipe. If that doesn't fix it, something may be wrong with your nandroid. If thats the case I would consider using Odin to flash 4.0.4 again.

It's possible that I got the order backwards and backed up after I already rooted, I can't say I remember for sure. What I don't understand is how I was able to write to the system folder, but if I recover to that same point I can't.

Shouldn't the recovery put my phone in the exact same state it was in when it was backed up?

Could the Odin flashing to TWRP and back to CWP cause some kind of problem? Does the nandroid backup overwrite that section of my phone's memory (boot I'm assuming?)

Yes, restoring a nandroid should start you back exactly at that point.

The nandroid doesn't replace the recovery. I'm wondering if maybe using CWM to make a nandroid, and then replacing CWM with TWRP and then reinstalling CWM to restore the nandroid could have done something but I'm just not sure.

I tried darkside, no dice. I got to thinking though, this CWM version was 5.x (something in the low 5s, an old verion) and had the idea to try a newer version (so I can use my existing nand backup). As I type this, I am restoring my nand on CWM Touch 5.8.1.3 and hopefully it works. While I was doing this, I came across this thread which suggests my problem could be due to the specific CWM version I was using.

Sounds like the problem you're having. Hopefully that will fix it. That's one reason I use TWRP and encourage others to do so. Let me know if that works for you.

I was just replying when I got your last reply. That's great and great to know. Glad you got it working. :D
